Design and Build

Starting with the design, the Apple 85W MagSafe 2 Power Adapter features a durable, travel-friendly design with a clean white finish that reflects Apple's signature minimalist aesthetic. While it is the largest of Apple's MagSafe 2 power adapters, it remains easy to carry and is designed for everyday use.

The adapter comes with an integrated MagSafe 2 magnetic connector that securely attaches to compatible MacBook Pro with Retina display models and safely disconnects if the cable is accidentally pulled, helping to prevent damage. 

It also features fold-out cord wings for neat cable storage and includes Apple's removable Duckhead AC plug, with support for the optional AC Extension Cable for added flexibility. Its built-in safety features help protect against overheating, overvoltage, and overcurrent, ensuring reliable and efficient charging.

Power Delivery and Protocols 

Moving on to the performance, the Apple 85W MagSafe 2 Power Adapter is designed to provide a stable 85W power output for compatible MacBook Pro with Retina display models. Unlike modern USB-C chargers, it uses Apple's proprietary MagSafe 2 magnetic charging connector instead of the USB Power Delivery (USB-PD) standard.

The adapter intelligently manages power delivery based on the connected MacBook's charging requirements, ensuring efficient charging while also powering the system during use. 

It is not compatible with USB-C devices and does not support modern charging protocols such as USB Power Delivery (USB-PD) or Programmable Power Supply (PPS), as it is specifically engineered for MagSafe 2-equipped MacBook Pro models.

Note: This adapter is designed for MagSafe 2 MacBooks only. While some third-party adapters let USB-C chargers power MagSafe 2 MacBooks, this 85W MagSafe 2 adapter cannot charge USB-C laptops.
