With a 1-inch camera sensor, 8K video recording, and a new GP3 processor, GoPro just turned an action camera into a cinema-grade camera that fits in your palm.

Moving away from its traditional action camera formula, GoPro has launched its new Mission 1 cinema camera series, which is said to offer professional-level image quality and improved performance, all while being compact and durable. So in this article, I will discuss the Mission 1 series and why it is so hyped.
What is Mission 1?
Mission 1 is a new series of high-end cinema cameras by GoPro. It is a compact camera that is designed for professionals and creators alike, looking for a powerful camera while prioritizing portability. The series features a 50MP 1-inch sensor, GP3 processor, up to 8K video recording, and overall improved low-light performance, which is not expected from traditional action cameras.
The series includes Mission 1, Mission 1 Pro, and Mission 1 Pro ILS with distinct features to cater to users' requirements and budgets.
Key Features of Mission 1 series
While the Mission 1 series comes with different features, they still share some similar high-performance characteristics, as it is designed for professional video recording.
50MP 1-inch sensor and GP3 processor: The new Mission 1 series features a 50MP 1-inch sensor, which is a serious jump compared to 1/2.3-inch sensors with resolutions around 12MP found on traditional action cameras like the GoPro Hero series.
This means it offers cinema-level 8K video recording even in low-light conditions and 14 stops of dynamic range. Additionally, the GP3 processor uses AI for advanced processing and better efficiency.
- Open Gate video recording: The traditional cameras used to “crop” the top and bottom of the sensor to create a rectangle. Unlike that, with Mission 1, you can capture the video on different aspect ratios like 4:3 or 16:9, making it easier to upload on different platforms such as YouTube, Instagram, and more without losing content quality or needing to record the same thing twice.
- Rugged design: These cameras are not only compact but durable, too. The Mission 1 and 1 Pro can be kept underwater at a depth of 20 m without a problem, while the Mission 1 Pro ILS is weather-resistant.
How are Mission 1, Mission 1 Pro, and Mission 1 Pro ILS different
Now that we know what the Mission 1 series is and what they offer, let's see how the variants differ and what distinct features they have.
Mission 1
As the name suggests, Mission 1 is the base model of the series, offering the same 1-inch sensor quality but without the “pro” video features. The camera tops out at 8K high-resolution but only at 30 frames per second. Additionally, for slow-motion videos, it supports Open Gate 4K resolution recording at 120 fps, which you can slow down by 4 times to get smooth slow-mo footage.

Mission 1 Action Cinema Camera is perfect for content creators or aspiring filmmakers who want a professional-level camera and can compromise on high resolutions compared to the Pro models.

Mission 1 Pro
It is the flagship action camera among the series, which offers higher frame rates and the best resolution. The Mission 1 Pro supports 8K video recording at 60 fps and 4K at 240 fps, whereas for the slow-motion capture, the camera records 1080p videos at 960 fps. For the Open Gate videos, it is similar to the Mission 1 model. It has also maintained the traditional GoPro fixed-lens design and durable waterproofing.

The series is powered by a new GP3 processor, which is extremely power-efficient and is said to deliver up to 5 hours of recording at 1080p30 or 3 hours at 4K30 on a single charge. It also offers more efficient thermal performance than its predecessor.
Mission 1 Pro ILS
The ILS in the name stands for Interchangeable Lens System, and as said, it is the most noticeable difference you can see in the series. The Mission 1 Pro ILS does not have a fixed lens. It gives you the flexibility to choose the lens to match your specific creative requirement, such as using the telephoto lens for distant subjects, a macro lens for extreme close-ups, or a prime lens for background blur.

Moreover, the Mission 1 Pro ILS supports HyperSmooth stabilization even if you are not using the standard GoPro lens. This means the quality is not sacrificed with the use of third-party lenses like Panasonic, Olympus, or Sigma.
