Apple Watch Series 9 Overview:
Design and Display
At a glance, the Watch Series 9 isn’t much different from its predecessors. It continues with the square-shaped chassis, available in the same two sizes, 41mm and 45mm. You can get either an aluminum or stainless steel finish on the case.
The Series 9 Apple Watch offers a range of color options:
- Aluminum: Available in colors like starlight, midnight, silver, (PRODUCT)RED, and a new pink.
- Stainless Steel: Options include gold, silver, and graphite.
For the build material, the aluminum version comes with an Ion-X glass display, while the stainless steel model features sapphire crystal glass. Additionally, the Series 9 is WR50 water-resistant and IP6X dust-resistant. Strap choices include rubber, textile, or stainless steel. Note that the weight of the watch varies from 31.9 grams to 51.6 grams, depending on your case and strap selections.
Battery
Even with new features and new engines added, which we’ll go through in a minute, the upgraded chip allows the watch to last 18 hours of normal usage, similar to the Watch Series 8. And when you need it, the low-power mode doubles its uptime.
New in Series 9
Pinch gesture
The Apple event also highlights the double-tap gesture, detected by unique wrist movements and blood flow changes. This gesture involves tapping the index finger and thumb of the watch hand together, likely providing new ways to interact with the device and gather health-related data. The company is probably getting us ready for the Apple Vision Pro!
S9 SiP Chip
The S9 dual-core chip is based on Apple’s A15 Bionic architecture and has 5.6 billion transistors (a 60% increase from the last generation), leading to a significant performance boost. Plus, this SiP also gets a 4-core neural engine (Apple’s NPU), ensuring two-fold improvement while executing machine learning tasks. It even gets an enhanced ultra-wideband chip, improving precise location detection.
Another significant improvement is the storage space increase, essentially since the models after the Watch 5 only featured a storage of 32GB. Now, the watch has twice the capacity, bumping the size to 64GB.
One of the key highlights is the introduction of WatchOS 10, which brings exciting features not only to the new Apple Watch Series 9 but also to existing Apple Watches, including models from Series 4 and onwards. >>>
Watch OS 10
Watch OS 10 introduces a bunch of new features. The “Smart Stack” is one of them and allows for notifications and widgets to stack on top of each other. Additionally, the method for accessing the control center has been changed, with some minor UI tweaks here and there. Instead of swiping up, you now press the side button.
Other than that, there are many fun changes, such as color palettes or animated Snoopy watch faces. A lot of UI changes have been made. This is only the tip of the iceberg. To check out the full list of new features, you can go to Apple’s official website.
Upgrades from Series 8
Display
On the front, only the 41mm Watch 9 gets a larger screen, boasting a 1.69-inch curved Retina LTPO OLED screen, while the 45mm one still has the same 1.9-inch panel. The display can reach a peak brightness of 2000 nits (up from 1000) and also supports AOD.
Health
The Apple Watch Series 9 enhances its health monitoring capabilities with a range of advanced features. These include an accelerometer, gyroscope, and optical heart sensor, all powered by a machine-learning algorithm. In addition to physical health monitoring, it also offers support for mental health.
The watch’s health-focused apps and notifications cover a whole lot of vital health metrics, ranging from blood oxygen level, temperature, electrocardiogram, and heart rate alerts to irregular rhythm detection and low cardio alerts.
Rest of the specs
One of the standout features is Siri’s ability to process requests directly on the watch, independently of Wi-Fi or cellular networks. This enhancement results in significantly quicker responses, enhancing the overall user experience.
The Series 9 Apple Watch offers intuitive interactions through various means, including the digital crown, taptic engine, and gestures like tapping, swiping, wrist raising, and covering to mute. These features allow users to easily handle calls, control music, use the watch as a camera shutter, and perform various tasks in their daily activities.
