The cheapest of them is simply called “iPad”, which is geared toward students, parents, and similar category of users. Apple iPad Series

Apple likes to call its tablets iPad. As a premium brand, the American company provides midrange and flagship tablet experiences. There are four iPad generations: iPad Mini, iPad Air, iPad, and iPad Pro. You get a one-year international warranty on all iPads.

Tablet vs iPad

Just as we just discussed, iPads and tablets are really the same product but they do have a few differences. First is the ecosystem. Apple iPads run on iPadOS while almost every other tablet out there runs on Android. There are a few that run on Windows as well but they are far few in between in the context of Nepal. The software alignment in itself gives the iPad a huge favor in terms of optimization as iPadOS is just a beefier iOS (or at least it started out as one) that only runs on a limited number of devices.  Because of this, almost all the software available is properly optimized for every iPad out there while the same cannot be said for ‘all tablets’. Since Android is open source and there are tons of brands that base their software on it, it is very difficult to individually optimize for each tablet. That leads to a worse experience in terms of software where you are more likely to encounter bugs and optimization issues. Another aspect is hardware and variety. Apple only sells a few iPads and each one is powerful enough to handle the needs of most users. Tablets on the other hand can range from a very basic smart home controller to a high-end artistic tool. So, people’s experience with Android tablets might not be as consistent or as ‘sunshine and roses’ as with iPads. The sheer variety does offer you more choices but it also makes it hard for your average Joe to choose and differentiate between them. Picking an iPad on the other hand is pretty simple. Let’s talk about that now.

Factors to consider before buying an Apple iPad

Budget

The first thing to focus on before your purchase is how much can you comfortably spend on the device before factoring in accessories and additions. The base 9th generation iPad costs around 50,000 rupees in Nepal which is the sweet spot for many people. It’s not as expensive as a full-fledged Macbook but can act as a complementary device alongside your iPhone. The next step up is the newer 10th-generation iPad with a refreshed design and a more powerful chip which costs around 30,000 rupees more. Another 30k jump will get you an Air with a PC-grade M1 chip and a reasonable amount of storage. For around 130-150k, you can get a last-gen iPad Pro with plenty of power to spare. And if you really don’t care about cash, the latest M4 iPad Pros costing anywhere from 2 to 4 lakhs are also available in Nepal.

Size

Also, think about the size and dimensions. A 12.9-inch iPad Pro might seem very appealing specs-wise but it feels giant when holding it for the first time. While some people might like the size, others might prefer the compact dimensions of the iPad Mini instead. The base iPads and the Airs might offer a middle ground with their 10.86-inch screen size. Besides personal preference, the decision to go for a particular model might be affected by your need like note-taking, gaming, or doing digital art. On the other hand, if you want something more handy, and on the go, investing in an iPad mini might be a wiser choice.

Performance

Although all iPads can handle their own, choosing to go for the 10th Gen iPad or the Air lineup is a suitable option. The 9th gen is a good value for the price but it ships with a very old A13 processor and only 3 GB of RAM. That’s perfectly fine for everyday use and note-taking but if you are into more intensive stuff like gaming getting a newer iPad is going to be worth it. Performance-wise, things like streaming, video editing, and animation require more cores so consider getting an iPad Pro in that case.

iPad Essentials: Which Accessories should you get?

Basic accessories for iPads include the case and the pencil. If you go for a basic one, the case is fairly affordable and we highly recommend you get it for durability. An Apple Pencil, on the other hand, is quite pricey but it’s a valuable addition if you intend to use your iPad for note-taking or digital art. Although third-party styli are a bit cheaper, we recommend going for an Apple Pencil because the older generation can be had for a discount and offers good enough features for most use cases.  Apple Magic cases (with keyboard/touchpad) are a different ‘case’ where they cost a LOT but do offer a lot of value to the right person. If you are planning to use your iPad as some form of laptop replacement, it is indispensable. But if that’s nothing of your concern, an Apple Folio case or any 3rd party case will fare just fine. There are also iPad accessories like a splitter or a cooling pad but these are all dependent on your needs. They aren’t essentials for everyone but getting them might be a good idea if your workflow demands it.

Which iPad to buy in 2024?

For most folks, the base iPad 9th gen should suffice for their needs. It’s got enough power to reliably get through browsing the web, using a variety of apps, and consuming content. It’s also the cheapest iPad in Apple’s lineup and doesn’t really miss out on any ‘big’ features except a somewhat older design and processor. You can even use it with the first-generation Apple pencil for doodling or notetaking. If you are looking for the best value iPad, there is no better choice than the base 9th Gen iPad 10.2”. You can play games, watch movies, take notes, and do a whole lot more without burning a hole in your pocket.

Our Top Picks

1.iPad 9th Gen

Despite being the cheapest iPad out there, it offers almost 90% of the iPad experience that you’d get from a more expensive model. The design is a bit outdated and it will be unavailable pretty soon as Apple discontinued it in June but for the time being, it earns our recommendation as the one to get if you are an average user. That’s because the chip is powerful enough, the screen is decent, and the battery backup is also reliable.

2.iPad Mini

The iPad Mini offers a unique proposition with its compact size and powerful chip. If you want a super portable tablet, then the Mini is the one to look out for. It’s not super expensive and packs a decent punch for the price as well. The refresh design also looks stylish and it weighs less than 300 grams. That’s just a little heavier than your average big phone.

3.iPad Pro M1

If you are looking for a premium iPad, get the M1 Pro from 2021. Getting the 11” will get you an IPS LCD instead of mini-LED but opting for the larger 12.9” model just for the screen upgrade might not be worth it either. It has everything from a powerful chip to a nice screen and good battery life with a range of accessories support.

Which iPad is best for Gaming?

The iPad Pro lineup is undoubtedly the best for gaming. Right now, the M4 iPad Pro (2024) is the fastest consumer computer that you can buy. So, it goes without saying that playing games will be a breeze there. Besides the powerful chips, iPad Pros also have Apple’s ‘ProMotion’ (120Hz) screen which is missing on all of Apple’s other tablets. The ‘Tadem’ OLED tech in the new model allows for super-fast response times, very high brightness, and poppy colors. That being said the latest M4 models are widely expensive so if you are looking for a bang-for-the-buck gaming tablet, looking at an older M1 iPad Pro would be the most sensible choice.

Can I use an iPad as a secondary display?

Yes, you use your iPad as a secondary display but it’s a bit nuanced. If you own a Macbook as well, the experience is seamless with Apple’s Sidecar solution which allows you to wirelessly use the iPad as a second monitor. For a Windows computer, you’d need to download third-party software like ‘SpaceDesk’ on both devices and then go on from there. Some solutions require a cable while some work wirelessly. Newer iPads with Type-C ports can also act as HDMI receivers requiring no additional software to mirror or extend your laptop’s screen area. Long story short, the iPad can be used practically as a secondary screen.

Apple iPad in Nepal: Conclusion

In Nepal, Apple has gained a strong reputation as a highly sought-after smartphone brand. By providing elite smartphones with excellent user experience and years of support, Apple has garnered a loyal user base that only continues to grow. Purchasing an iPhone, iPad, or Airpod is also quite convenient as you can either visit offline retail shops or buy online via Daraz or Hukut.
