Google has introduced Ask Maps and Immersive Navigation, a major update that adds Gemini-powered conversational search and a new 3D navigation experience to Google Maps

Google just pushed what it's calling the biggest update to Maps in over a decade, and it's a two-part thing: first of all, a conversational AI feature called Ask Maps, and a completely redesigned navigation experience called ‘Immersive Navigation.’ Both are powered by Gemini. Let's get into this article, where I will discuss everything about the latest Google Maps update, including what it does and when it's coming.
Google’s Ask Maps and Immersive Navigation Overview
What Is Ask Maps

Back in November last year Google quietly slipped Gemini into Maps, but only in a tiny way. This new update though? It goes way further. They just added "Ask Maps" – basically a full chat box right inside the app. Instead of typing keywords and scrolling forever, you just talk to it like a normal person.
Try it out: ask something like "Where can I get a quiet table for two near a bookshop on Sunday afternoon?" or "Is there a pharmacy open right now that I can walk to?" Regular Maps would choke on those, but this thing actually understands and shows you real options on a custom map.
How Ask Maps Pulls Its Information
It’s pulling from the exact same huge database as always – those 300 million+ places and reviews from half a billion users. But, worth noting that nothing is new there really, as they just made it so you can actually ask in plain English instead of playing search-bar detective.

Personalization
It even remembers your history. If you’ve been searching or saving vegan restaurants a bunch, and you just ask “somewhere to meet friends after work,” it’ll quietly throw vegan options into the mix without you having to say the word. The more you use it, the better it gets at actually knowing what you like. Once you pick a place, you can book a table right there, shoot the link to your mates, or tap for directions and head out.
Immersive Navigation
3D View and Road Details

The navigation side is honestly the biggest win. Driving mode got a full 3D glow-up – the map now looks like the real world with actual buildings, overpasses, hills, everything. When it matters, it highlights the exact lane you need, crosswalks, traffic lights, stop signs… so you’re not second-guessing every turn or merge. And moreover, Gemini stitches it together using fresh Street View shots and aerial photos, so it actually understands the route like you’re driving it for the first time.
Route View and Voice Guidance
It also pulls the camera back so you see way more of the road ahead. Smart zoom and see-through buildings mean you can actually spot the next turn or merge before you’re on it. Voice guidance got a total rewrite too – now it sounds like a mate chatting instead of some robot barking directions.
For alternate routes, instead of throwing something like a “try this instead.” It now shows the trade-offs: “this one’s faster but there’s a toll” or “this one’s longer but zero traffic.” And the live alerts for roadworks or crashes are still there, all powered by drivers sending in over 10 million updates every single day.
Final Stretch Guidance
And before you even leave the house, you can pull up Street View to preview exactly where you’re going. Then, as you roll up, it highlights the actual building entrance, nearby parking spots, and even which side of the street it’s on so you don’t end up circling like an idiot.
Google’s Ask Maps and Immersive Navigation Availability
Google's Ask Maps is rolling out now in the US and India on Android and iOS. Desktop support is coming soon. Whereas, immersive Navigation is rolling out now in the US on iOS, Android, CarPlay, Android Auto, and Google Built-in cars. No timeline has been given for other countries yet.
