      MacBook Neo Overview

      Design

The MacBook Neo has a fanless, all-aluminum body, which is actually the first thing worth talking about, because laptops in this price range are almost always plastic. Chromebooks, cheap Windows machines, they're all plastic. Meanwhile, Apple went with full metal here, and it's the real deal.

It comes in four colors: Blush, Indigo, Silver, and Citrus. The colorways are more playful than what Apple usually does with its higher-end lineup. And given the audience they're going after, it probably makes sense as well. One subtle detail is that each color has a keyboard that's slightly tinted to match the body. It's hard to notice individually, but side by side, you can clearly see the difference.

      Build

Now, aluminum is a double-edged thing. It looks great and feels premium, but the problem is that it often dents. Permanently. Unlike plastic, which just bounces back or, at worst, cracks at the hinge, aluminum holds onto every drop. For a laptop that's going to land in school bags, be handed down to younger siblings, or get thrown onto cafe tables, that's something to keep in mind.

The laptop is 0.50 inches thick and weighs 2.7 pounds. That's actually the same weight as the MacBook Air, which is slightly larger and notably slimmer at 0.44 inches. So the Neo isn't quite as light as you might expect given its smaller form factor.

      Display

It's a 13-inch Liquid Retina display, which is Apple's name for an LED-backlit IPS panel. Resolution is 2408 x 1506 at 219 ppi, brightness tops out at 500 nits, and it covers sRGB with support for one billion colors.

That's the same max brightness as the MacBook Air, but the Air uses a P3 wide color panel and a sharper 2560x1664 resolution. So in terms of color accuracy and sharpness, the Neo is a step behind. For browsing, streaming, and writing, you probably won't notice much. For photo editing or anything color-critical, there's a visible difference. Similarly, the refresh rate is also 60Hz. No True Tone either, since Apple didn't put an ambient light sensor in this one.

      Performance

The Neo runs on Apple's A18 Pro chip, which is the same chip inside the iPhone 16 Pro. Apple has configured it here with a 6-core CPU and a 5-core GPU, one fewer GPU core than the iPhone version. There's also a 16-core Neural Engine and 60GB/s memory bandwidth.

The more interesting question is how an iPhone chip translates to a laptop. And the short answer is: for everyday tasks, really well. Web browsing, email, video calls, light photo editing, streaming, documents, all of that runs fine. Where it hits its ceiling is with heavier workloads. Video editing in any serious capacity, 3D rendering, or running a lot of demanding apps simultaneously will push it.  Similarly, its Memory is 8GB unified, and that's fixed; there's no upgrade path.

      Battery and Charging

Apple rates the Neo at up to 16 hours for video streaming and up to 11 hours for wireless web. The MacBook Air, for comparison, gets 18 hours of video and 15 hours of web. So the Neo sits just a few hours short.

The battery itself is a 36.5Wh cell, which is physically smaller than the Air's 53.8Wh. But the A18 Pro's efficiency means it punches above its size. Moreover, it ships with a 20W USB-C charger. However, you don’t get any MagSafe, or a fast charging, or even a high-impedance headphone amp support.

      Camera and Audio

The 1080p FaceTime HD camera sits inside the top bezel without a notch, hence the video quality should be decent for calls. The MacBook Air bumps this up to a 12MP Center Stage camera that can auto-frame you, so for regular video calls and meetings, the Air has a clear edge there.

Other than that, the audio is handled by dual side-firing speakers with Spatial Audio and Dolby Atmos support. There's also a dual-mic array with beamforming, plus Voice Isolation and Wide Spectrum modes. The Air has four speakers and a three-mic array, so the Neo is more modest there too, but for its price range, two speakers with Dolby Atmos is still a solid showing. Similarly, there's a 3.5mm headphone jack on the right side.

      Keyboard, Trackpad, and Security

The keyboard is Apple's Magic Keyboard with full-height function keys. However, Apple hasn’t provided any backlighting here, which will probably frustrate a lot of people who work in low-light settings or at night.

The trackpad is a standard mechanical trackpad that physically clicks.  On the base model, the top-right key is just a lock button. And you also don’t get Touch ID; however, you can spend $100 more for the 512GB model to get fingerprint unlock.

      Ports and Connectivity

The Neo has two USB-C ports on the left side, both with charging support. The left one is USB 3 at up to 10Gb/s and supports DisplayPort. The right one is USB 2 at up to 480Mb/s. But neither of them is Thunderbolt. However, you can connect one external display at up to 4K 60Hz from the left port. For wireless, the device supports Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 6.0.

      Software and Apple Intelligence

The Neo ships with macOS Tahoe, which includes the Liquid Glass design update. Apple Intelligence is on board, covering Writing Tools, Genmoji, Clean Up in Photos, and ChatGPT integration.

Similarly, the device also features the Mac-iPhone integration, which is also worth calling out. Continuity Camera, Universal Clipboard, iPhone Mirroring, Handoff, AirDrop, and Instant Hotspot all work here, the same as any other modern Mac.
