AI and Software

The 2024 iPad Mini gets major upgrades through software. It now packs Apple Intelligence, with tools like Writing Tools for refining text across apps like Mail, Notes, and Pages, plus a smarter Siri with better language understanding. You can also access ChatGPT for extra info. AI is the big draw, but it’ll come later with the iPadOS 18.1 update this October. This update adds Apple Pencil Pro support, letting you use features like squeeze and roll. You can also use Smart Script to write and edit in your own handwriting, transcribe audio, customize the home screen, and send RCS messages. Plus, the iPad finally has a calculator app and a new Math Notes feature to solve handwritten equations, create variables, and insert graphs.

Performance

Much of the AI heavy-duty is all thanks to the A17 Pro chipset underneath. It is quite a significant jump from the A15 Bionic silicon on the previous iteration of the iPad. This processor arrived alongside Pro models of iPhone 15 with a 16-core Neural Engine (NPU). Similarly, it has a hexa-core CPU, two of the cores are dedicated to pure performance while the rest are for efficiency. Then for graphics, there is a five-core GPU. The whole thing is fabricated on TSMC’s 3nm process and as a result, is very efficient. In the meantime, the iPad Mini 7 (2024) is available in three storage options, those being 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB. This is a sizable upgrade over the last generation of iPad, given that it started at a measly 64GB. Though Apple does not outright mention it, they have bumped up the memory on this thing. The latest iPhones were upgraded with 8GB RAM, as it is a minimum requirement for facilitating all the AI tasks. Hence, the latest iPad now likely has the same amount of memory as well. A 19.3Wh battery powers this tablet and with it you can get up to 10 hours of usage.

Design and Display

The iPad Mini 7 (2024) looks pretty much the same on the outside. It keeps the same compact design and aluminum body, and comes in Blue, Purple, Starlight, and Space Grey. You can pick either the WiFi-only model or the cellular one, both supporting WiFi 6E and Bluetooth v5.3, with the cellular version also getting 5G. It has 12MP cameras on both the front and back, plus a Touch ID sensor on the top. For the display, it has an 8.3-inch Liquid Retina panel with a 1,488 x 2,266 resolution. The screen covers a wide P3 color range, hits 500 nits of brightness, and includes True Tone for a more comfortable view. It’s also laminated with an oleophobic and antireflective coating.A
