Xiaomi's MIX series is making a comeback, and the next device in the lineup—the MIX 5—could be one of the most ambitious smartphones the company has ever built. The MIX series has always been Xiaomi's experimental playground, where the company tests bold ideas before they hit mainstream devices. The last proper MIX phone was the MIX 4 back in  2021, which introduced Xiaomi's first under-display camera housed in a full ceramic unibody. Now, leaks suggest the MIX 5 is aiming even higher with under-display 3D face unlock technology, potentially making Xiaomi the first to commercialize this feature in a mass-market phone. This article will discuss everything about the upcoming Xiaomi MIX 5, including its rumored specifications and availability.

      Xiaomi MIX 5 Overview

      Display and Design

      undefined

According to tipster Digital Chat Station, the MIX 5 will feature a quad-curved display with an improved under-display camera. Xiaomi's already tried under-display cameras with the MIX 4, but that implementation had noticeable compromises in image quality due to the display pixels sitting over the sensor. The MIX 5's under-display camera is expected to address those shortcomings with improved sensor technology and pixel arrangement. The quad-curved display is also less common these days, with most manufacturers moving back to flat or slightly curved screens for better durability and usability.

      Under-Display 3D Face Unlock

The standout feature I found here was the rumored under-display 3D facial recognition system. Tipster Smart Pikachu claims the MIX 5 will be the first mass-market phone to implement this technology. Current under-display cameras are 2D, which limits them to basic selfies and video calls. Adding 3D depth sensing under the display would enable secure facial unlocking similar to Apple's Face ID, but without any notch, or punch-hole.

Xiaomi MIX 5 Rumors and Availability

Xiaomi hasn't confirmed pricing or availability for the MIX 5 yet. The phone is expected to launch ahead of the iPhone 18 series, possibly at Lei Jun's annual speech in mid-2025.
