Apple iMac M6 Overview

Design and display

The new iMac keeps the same slim and clean design as its predecessor, with the computer hardware built into the back of the display, so there is no need for a separate CPU tower. It measures 21.5 inches in width, 18.1 inches in height, and 5.8 inches in depth, including the stand. The 10-core model weighs 4.42 kg, while the 12-core variant weighs slightly more at 4.44 kg. The desktop is available in seven colors: blue, purple, pink, orange, yellow, green, and silver.

The iMac also features a color-matched magnetic power connector that snaps into place when attached to the computer. This makes connecting the power cable simple while maintaining the desktop's clean design.

On the front, the desktop features a 24-inch 4.5K Retina display with a resolution of 4480 × 2520 pixels and up to 500 nits of brightness. The panel supports the P3 wide color gamut, making it suitable for everyday productivity, photo editing, and media consumption. Apple also offers an optional nano-texture glass finish that helps reduce screen reflections under bright lighting.

Depending on the configuration, the iMac also supports up to two external displays with resolutions of up to 6K at 60Hz, allowing users to expand their workspace beyond the built-in 24-inch display.

For video playback, the display supports HDR formats, including Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HDR10, and HLG. This allows compatible HDR content to show a wider range of brightness and colors, although the actual viewing experience depends on the content and its format.

Performance and memory

The new Apple iMac is powered by the M6 chip, which comes in two configurations depending on the model. The base variant features a 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU, while the higher-end variant gets a 12-core CPU and 12-core GPU. Both configurations also include a 16-core Neural Engine to handle AI-related tasks.

In terms of memory, both models start with 16GB of unified memory. The base variant can be configured with up to 24GB, while the higher-end model supports up to 32GB. For storage, both start with a 256GB SSD, with options for 512GB and 1TB. The higher-end configuration also offers a 2TB storage option.

The new iMac also supports hardware-accelerated ray tracing, which helps create more realistic lighting, shadows, and reflections in supported games and graphics applications. However, the overall design remains largely unchanged, with the M6 chip being one of the main upgrades in this refresh.

Camera, audio, and connectivity

For video calls, the new iMac features a 12MP Center Stage camera that keeps users in the frame as they move. It also supports Desk View, which can show an overhead view of a user's desk during compatible video calls. The camera supports 1080p HD video recording and uses an advanced image signal processor to improve video quality.

For audio, the desktop comes with a six-speaker sound system featuring force-cancelling woofers and wide stereo sound. It also supports Spatial Audio when playing compatible music and videos with Dolby Atmos. Additionally, the iMac includes a three-microphone array designed to capture voices clearly during calls.

In terms of connectivity, the iMac supports Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6. The base model features two Thunderbolt 4 ports, while the higher-end variant comes with four. Both models include a 3.5mm headphone jack, and the higher-end version also comes with 2.5Gb Ethernet.

Software and AI features

The new iMac runs macOS 27 and supports Apple Intelligence, including the redesigned Siri assistant. These features can help users write and summarize text, find information, and complete everyday tasks across supported apps. The M6 chip's Neural Engine supports on-device AI processing, although the availability of Apple Intelligence features varies by language and region.

iPhone integration and other features

The new iMac supports Apple's Continuity features, allowing users to share files and photos, hand off tasks, and use iPhone Mirroring to control their iPhone from the Mac. Users can also transfer their files, settings, photos, and passwords when switching to a Mac.

The desktop comes with color-matched accessories, including a Magic Keyboard and Magic Mouse or Magic Trackpad. The Magic Keyboard with Touch ID enables users to unlock the computer and authenticate purchases and app downloads securely.
