Performance

Starting with the Mac Mini M6, the new chip features a 12-core CPU and 12-core GPU, up from the 10-core CPU and GPU on the previous-generation M4. It also introduces a dual 16-core Neural Engine, while each GPU core now includes a Neural Accelerator. The chip offers up to 170GB/s of memory bandwidth as well.

Compared to its predecessor, Apple claims the M6 delivers up to 40% faster CPU performance, 2x faster graphics and storage performance, and up to 4x faster AI performance. The company also claims up to 4.8x faster prompt processing in LM Studio and up to 2x faster ray-traced gaming performance in Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition.

macOS 27 and Apple Intelligence

Moving on to software, the Mac mini M6 runs macOS 27, bringing Apple's latest Apple Intelligence features to the desktop. You can also ask questions about what's on your screen through Visual Intelligence.

Apple has also integrated AI features into apps and tools like Spotlight, Safari, Shortcuts, and Photos. For memory and storage, the Mac mini M6 starts with 16GB of unified memory and 256GB of SSD storage. You can configure it with up to 32GB of memory and 2TB of storage, depending on your needs. 

The base configuration should be enough for everyday productivity, browsing, and office work. However, if you plan to edit videos, work with large creative projects, or run AI models locally, going for more memory and storage would be a better choice. Since the unified memory is shared between the CPU and GPU and cannot be upgraded later, it's worth choosing your configuration carefully.

Connectivity and Ports

As for connectivity, the Mac mini M6 supports Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6. It also gets a 2.5Gb Ethernet port by default, which you can configure for up to 10Gb Ethernet if you need faster wired networking.

Design

Finally, in terms of design, the Mac mini M6 retains the same compact silver aluminum body as its predecessor. It measures just 5 inches in width and depth and is 2 inches tall, so it won't take up much space on your desk.

There is no major redesign this time around, as Apple has focused mainly on the internal hardware and connectivity upgrades. As usual, the Mac mini is a desktop computer rather than an all-in-one system, so you'll need to connect your own monitor, keyboard, and mouse.
