Lenovo Legion is a high-performance gaming series that includes laptops, desktops, smartphones, and tablets. It features the latest Intel Core or AMD Ryzen processors, NVIDIA GeForce RTX graphics, and up to 64GB of RAM, ensuring smooth performance for demanding games. The lineup includes models like the Legion 5, 7, and Pro series, catering to various budgets, while the Legion Duel smartphone and Legion Y700 tablet focus on mobile gaming. Key features include advanced cooling systems, high-refresh-rate displays, and customizable RGB lighting, offering gamers a strong balance of performance and value.
The first Legion-branded laptops were unveiled at CES 2017, and the brand now sells a wide range of gaming products, including desktops, monitors, accessories, and even software. The company even forayed into the gaming smartphone market with the Phone Duel in 2020, but bailed out just a few years later.
However, Lenovo’s gaming lineup is much older than the inception of Legion. The company used to sell laptops for games and multimedia under the IdeaPad Y series as early as 2008. The Y series was designed for hardcore gamers and featured high-performance hardware and advanced cooling systems to support intense gaming sessions This continued till 2017, when Lenovo introduced the first Legion gaming laptops: Y520 and Y720. These new laptops dropped the IdeaPad Y branding but kept alive the gaming spirit of the old lineup. Lenovo kept using the glowing “Y” as the brand’s logo.
Then in 2020, Lenovo streamlined the Legion lineup of gaming laptops with the new Legion 5 and Legion 7 models. They were the successor to the Y540 and Y740 that were launched in 2019. Even within the Legion 5 and Legion 7 series, Lenovo offers Intel and AMD (Ryzen) models distinguished by the presence/absence of the ‘i” suffix. Later, Legion added Pro models as the ultimate flagship gaming laptop and a Slim model as a portable alternative.
At CES 2023, Lenovo announced the Legion Pro 5/5i and Pro 7/7i series laptops that succeeded the Leigon 5 and Legion 5 of the previous year. These new laptops are also significant since they are the first laptops with Lenovo’s in-house AI chip, which the company says improves the fps in games through resource optimization.
At CES 2024, Lenovo introduced the Legion 9i, a flagship gaming laptop with an industry-first self-contained liquid-cooling system. Powered by 14th Gen Intel Core HX processors and NVIDIA RTX 40 series graphics, the Legion 9i delivers top-tier performance for gaming and content creation. Lenovo also showcased the Legion Pro 5i Gen 9, a mid-range gaming laptop offering excellent specs at a more affordable price, appealing to budget-conscious gamers.
Lenovo Legion Series is best for gamers and content creators who need high-performance machines for demanding tasks. It offers strong graphics and customizable features, with options to fit different budgets.
Legion Series is not ideal for those who need lightweight, portable devices or don’t require high performance. Business users may prefer the ThinkPad series.
