Leica has introduced the Q3 Monochrom, a niche camera for a niche audience that brings the company's monochrome philosophy into its compact full-frame Q series. This new model continues that legacy of Leica's Monochrom cameras with a 60MP sensor that only sees in shades of grey. Now, let's jump in this article, where I will discuss everything about the latest Leica Q3 Monochrom, including its specifications, features, and availability.

      Leica Q3 Monochrom Overview

      Design and Build

      undefined

Leica has gone for a full stealth look with this one. The classic Q-series silhouette is there, but everything is blacked out: the all-metal body, the lens hood, even the engravings are done in grey and black. They've even removed the iconic red Leica dot for a more minimalistic appearance. Similarly, the body is covered in leatherette with a clean, textured surface. It's manufactured in Germany and carries an IP52 rating for dust and splash resistance.

      Sensor and Image Capabilities

The Q3 Monochrom uses a 60MP monochrome sensor that records only luminance, which is, in other words, works brightness information. There's no colour filter array here, so you get higher detail, sharper output, and better tonal gradation compared to shooting black-and-white on a regular colour sensor.

Leica has included Triple Resolution Technology. This lets you shoot at 60MP, 36MP, or 18MP, depending on your needs. The ISO range stretches from 100 all the way up to 200,000. And if you're into video, this thing can record up to 8K.

      Lens and Shooting Features

The Q3 Monochrom comes with a fixed Leica Summilux 28mm f/1.7 ASPH lens. You get a macro mode that lets you focus as close as 17cm. And if you need to get closer to your subject without moving, there's also a digital zoom that extends the reach from 28mm to 90mm.

The camera features a 5.76MP OLED electronic viewfinder and a tilting touchscreen with a hybrid AF system that handles focusing duties. For connectivity, you get Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB-C, and Micro HDMI. To transfer files, you can use the Leica FOCUS app.

      Software and Accessories

This is the first Q-series model with Content Credentials, which are CAI-compliant digital signatures that verify image authenticity. With all the AI-generated imagery floating around these days, this could actually be useful for photojournalists and anyone who needs to prove their photos are real. Leica is also introducing a separated photo/video menu interface with this camera. If you have the regular Q3 or Q3 43, this UI change will roll out to those models via firmware by the end of 2025.

The Q3 Monochrom is fully compatible with existing Q3 accessories. Leica is also launching some new stuff alongside it: a wireless charging handgrip, a red filter for contrast control, and new carrying straps.
