MacBook Air M4 Overview

Design and Display

The MacBook Air M4 retains the same thin and light design. It is available in four colors: Midnight, Starlight, Silver, and the new Sky Blue. Apple has removed the Space Gray option. All models include a color-matched MagSafe charging cable. In terms of size and weight, the 13-inch model measures 11.97 x 8.46 x 0.44 inches and weighs 1.24 kg, while the 15-inch version is 13.40 x 9.35 x 0.45 inches and weighs 1.51 kg.

A major upgrade from the M3 model is its ability to support up to two external 6K displays even with the lid open, removing the previous limitation of requiring the lid to be closed. The 13-inch MacBook Air features a 13.6-inch Liquid Retina display with a resolution of 2560x1664, True Tone support, and 500 nits of brightness. The 15-inch model comes with a larger 15.3-inch Liquid Retina display, offering a resolution of 2880x1864, along with the same True Tone support and 500 nits brightness. Additionally, Apple has introduced an optional Nano-texture display for the MacBook Air for the first time, which helps reduce glare. This feature was previously available only on the M4 iPad Pro and MacBook Pro.

During our usage, both the 13 and 15-inch models were a visual treat while doing Photoshop edits, normal tasks, and binge watching some Netflix Series.

Performance and Chipset

The MacBook Air M4 features Apple’s M4 chip with a 10-core CPU and up to a 10-core GPU. Meanwhile, the Macbook Air now also starts with 16GB of RAM, while storage starts at the same 256GB. However, It supports up to 32GB of unified memory. According to Apple, the M4 chip offers up to twice the speed of the M1 model. Neural Engine tasks are up to three times faster. And in real world too, the M4 is super snappy for whatever you throw at it. Thanks to the efficient chip and OS, everything feels like a charm here.

The MacBook Air offers up to 18 hours of battery life for web browsing or video playback, which remains unchanged from the M3 models but is maintained with the improved efficiency of the M4 chip. It performed very well during our tests. Apple has also used 100% recycled cobalt and over 95% recycled lithium in the battery, aligning with its sustainability efforts.

Camera and Features

The device includes a 12MP Center Stage camera that automatically keeps users centered in the frame during video calls. Additionally, it supports Desk View, which displays both the user and a top-down view of their desk. We did some Teams meetings and Zoom calls, and the audio and video quality were very decent.

In terms of connectivity, the MacBook Air supports Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 for wireless connectivity. It includes two Thunderbolt 4 (USB-C) ports and a 3.5mm headphone jack. For audio, the device features a four-speaker system with Spatial Audio and Dolby Atmos. It also features a three-microphone array to improve voice clarity.
