A slim, lightweight phone with a massive 7000mAh battery and great display, but held back by a weak chipset and questionable pricing.

Realme has launched the Realme 16 5G in India. It comes with specifications that scream nothing more than what you will find in a typical budget phone, bar a big 7000mAh silicon-carbon battery. But Realme has launched this device at such a price that it starts to appear even less appealing. So, what’s the problem? Let’s dive in to find why!
Realme 16 5G Overview
Design and Display
Realme is calling this the Air Design, which, in other words, is a way of saying the Realme 16 5G is slim and light. To be fair, they are right, but it’s also not terribly thin, as it might sound. 8.1mm thickness is pretty standard these days, and if you look closely, many smartphones now come much thinner.

But, its 183 grams does grant Realme to call this phone a light device. Anyway, the build is the usual plastic back and frame with a glass front, which is generally expected at this range. However, the devices with all IP66, IP68, IP69, and IP69K ratings together were by far the most surprising thing to me, as smartphones with 4 different ratings are rare to come by at any price. The phone is available in two color options: Air White and Air Black. And by the way, there is also the ‘Aura Ring Flash’ around the rear camera module, which can be used for close-up shots in low light.
The 6.57-inch AMOLED panel should deliver brilliant visuals and should also be capable of delivering vibrant and accurate colors. The scrolling is also very strong with 120Hz, and the device hits a peak brightness of 4500 nits, which makes it a top option if you are thinking of smartphones that can function outdoors properly. Other than that, the device covers 100 percent of the DCI-P3 color gamut and is protected by AGC DT-Star D+ glass.
Performance
The device is powered by the Dimensity 6400 Turbo chipset, which is rather disappointing for a phone this expensive. The price hike could be a result of recent crises, but it’s still not reasonable to pay this much for a phone that comes with chipsets generally reserved for budget phones.
Anyway, it is built on a 6nm node but is capable enough to handle daily tasks, social media, streaming, and so much more. Although it’s not a very good chip for hard gaming, you can play a few titles in low settings.
But a good thing is that the phone is paired with Memory that goes up to 12GB LPDDR4x with 256GB of UFS 2.2 storage. And on the software side, Realme UI 7.0 runs on Android 16, and Realme is also making a 72-month fluency promise backed by what they call the Flux Engine, their AI-based resource management layer.

Camera

The rear camera setup is a 50MP Sony IMX852 main sensor with f/1.8 aperture and PDAF, which produces solid results with natural color and decent dynamic range. However, do expect the low-light performance to be inconsistent. On the other hand, you get an extra 2MP auxiliary lens that exists mostly to fill a second hole in the module. The 2MP depth sensor has been included in budget phones for years, and it hasn’t meaningfully improved portraits ever, and it doesn't here either. They could have at least provided a functional ultrawide camera, but it is what it is, I guess.
The front camera is a 50MP shooter capable of producing decent selfies. The more interesting feature is the rear selfie mirror, a small physical mirror built into the camera module that lets you frame shots with the main 50MP sensor rather than the front camera. Realme has paired it with gesture controls and a voice countdown as well.
Battery and Charging
Another interesting thing about the phone is the big 7000mAh silicon-carbon Titan Battery. It comfortably provides two days of battery life in moderate use. Moreover, Realme has claimed it offers 1600-cycle longevity, resulting in 80 percent battery health after around six years of daily charging. The 60W wired charging that comes with the device gets you to 50 percent in about 30 minutes and to full in about 74 minutes. And by the way, bypass charging is also supported, through which you can use the phone, especially for gaming, while plugged in.
