Recently, Redmi launched Redmi Note 14 4G and Redmi Note 14 5G, both running on Android 14 and promising up to four major Android updates. In a recent announcement, the company confirmed that the Redmi Note 14 4G will receive six years of security updates, alongside the regular Android updates. Let’s break it down further.
Redmi Note 14 extended software support
As per the latest information, the Redmi Note 14 4G will get six years of security updates, which is a significant step forward for Xiaomi. Along with the security patches, the device will receive four major Android updates. This will start from Android 14 and continue through to Android 18.
On the other hand, the Redmi Note 14 5G will receive two major Android updates and four years of security updates. This means the device will likely reach the end of its update cycle with Android 16. While this still provides good support, it’s somewhat disappointing in comparison to the Redmi Note 14 4G.
Notable move….but!
This extended update cycle from Xiaomi is a positive move. The company might be influenced by Samsung, which has been offering extended support for 6 years even for low-end devices. It’s a bit surprising that the cheaper 4G variant gets longer software support, especially when considering the likely performance limitations of the 4G model over the next six years. This comes as an unfair trade to Note 14 5G owners, as it is quite obvious to expect a longer support cycle for their more expensive device, no? Well, we better hear something new on the 5G model soon, if not I will call this a stupid move from Xiaomi.

Potential Confusion
An interesting point to consider is that while Xiaomi has launched its HyperOS 2, the Redmi Note 14 series is still running on HyperOS 1. There are speculations on platforms like Reddit that the updates could actually be for HyperOS, not Android.
We have not heard anything from the company regarding this matter, but we hope this turns out to be true. Moreover, it’s still uncertain if the policy of update will carry over to the upcoming Note 15 5G series. It’s something worth keeping an eye on.
