The 16-inch M5 Max is the best MacBook money can buy! No doubt on that.

Apple just launched the MacBook Pro 16-inch with M5 Pro and M5 Max globally, and this is the one that the pro crowd has been waiting for since Apple only shipped the base M5 14-inch last year. Unlike the MacBook Air or the base MacBook Pro, the 16-inch model doesn't come with the vanilla M5. It starts with M5 Pro and goes up to M5 Max. Let's get into this article, where I will discuss everything about the latest MacBook Pro 16-inch (M5 Pro / M5 Max), including its price in Nepal, specifications, and availability.
MacBook Pro 16-inch (M5 Pro / M5 Max) Overview
Design

The MacBook Pro 16-inch is 0.66 inches thick and weighs about 4.7 pounds on the M5 Pro, slightly more on the M5 Max due to the extra cooling hardware. It's an aluminum unibody, built with over 45% recycled materials, and manufactured using 50% renewable electricity. Apple ships it in 100% fiber-based packaging.
The keyboard is a full-height backlit Magic Keyboard with a function row and Touch ID. The Force Touch trackpad is there as usual. Active cooling keeps the machine running at full speed under sustained heavy loads, something the fanless Air simply can't do for extended periods. One new option this year is nano-texture glass on the display, available as a configuration upgrade. It handles reflections in bright environments without the color accuracy trade-offs you usually get with matte coatings.
Performance

The M5 Pro and M5 Max are both built on Apple's new Fusion Architecture, two dies fused into one chip. The CPU goes up to 18 cores, split between 6 super cores for single-threaded performance and 12 performance cores for multi-threaded workloads. Apple claims this is about 30% faster in multi-threaded tasks compared to M4 Pro and M4 Max, and up to 2.5x faster than M1 Pro and M1 Max.
The GPU architecture has also been updated. Both chips get Neural Accelerators inside each GPU core, which is the same approach Apple used in the base M5. The result is up to 50% faster graphics performance over M4 Pro and M4 Max, and up to 35% faster ray tracing with the new third-generation engine.
Where the M5 generation really separates itself is AI. M5 Pro and M5 Max deliver up to 4x faster LLM prompt processing compared to M4 Pro and M4 Max, and up to 8x compared to M1 Pro and M1 Max. The M5 Max specifically is up to 3.5x faster than M4 Max in Topaz Video for AI video work, and up to 3x faster in DaVinci Resolve for video effects rendering. Memory bandwidth is also up. M5 Pro supports up to 64GB of unified memory with 307GB/s bandwidth, and M5 Max goes up to 128GB with 614GB/s. The bandwidth jump over M4 is roughly 12%.
Storage
M5 Pro models start at 1TB, and M5 Max models start at 2TB, both double the base from the M4 generation. The SSD itself is faster too, with read/write speeds exceeding 6,000 MB/s in testing, which Apple broadly describes as up to 2x faster than M4. Both chips can be configured up to 8TB.
Display

The 16.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR display carries over from the M4 generation unchanged in core specs. You get a 3456 x 2234 resolution, mini-LED backlighting with a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio, 1600 nits peak HDR brightness, 1000 nits for SDR content, and ProMotion up to 120Hz. P3 wide color and True Tone are both there, and the display can drop to as low as 1 nit in dark environments.
The nano-texture glass option is new and available as a paid configuration. As mentioned, it reduces glare without compromising color accuracy, a trade-off that's historically been difficult to get right on laptops. M5 Pro supports up to three external displays simultaneously alongside the built-in screen. M5 Max goes up to four.
Camera and Audio
The 12MP Center Stage camera with Desk View is the same hardware as M4, but gets a processing boost from M5's Neural Engine. Center Stage automatically frames you during video calls, and Desk View uses the wide-angle lens to show a simultaneous overhead view of your workspace.
Similarly, audio is handled by a six-speaker system with force-cancelling woofers, Spatial Audio, and Dolby Atmos. Three studio-quality directional mics with beamforming and noise reduction handle the input side. No hardware changes over M4, the improvements here come through software and the stronger Neural Engine.

Connectivity and Battery
Thunderbolt 5 is probably the headline port upgrade. The MacBook Pro 16-inch M5 gets three Thunderbolt 5 ports running at up to 120Gb/s, three times the 40Gb/s limit of Thunderbolt 4 on M4. The rest of the port selection is unchanged: HDMI 2.1 supporting up to 8K at 60Hz or 4K at 240Hz, an SDXC card slot, a 3.5mm headphone jack with high-impedance headphone support, and MagSafe 3 for charging. Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 come via Apple's N1 chip.
Up to 24 hours of battery life on M5 Pro, with M5 Max models rated at up to 20 hours under heavy use. The 140W MagSafe adapter ships in the box and gets you to 50% in about 30 minutes.
Software
Like all other new MacBooks, this one also of course, ships with macOS Tahoe. The big design change across the system is Liquid Glass, Apple's new translucent UI material. Beyond visuals, macOS Tahoe brings a reworked Spotlight that lets you act on results directly from search, Live Translation in Messages, FaceTime, and the Phone app, and more capable Shortcuts that plug directly into Apple Intelligence models.
The Foundation Models framework is new for developers, giving apps direct access to on-device AI. iPhone Mirroring lets you interact with your iPhone from the Mac screen, with Live Activities support so notifications are actionable without picking up your phone. Control Center has been updated, and folder and app icon color customization is in this release too.
Apple Intelligence runs fully on-device for writing tools, image generation, and photo editing. Private Cloud Compute handles queries that need more processing than what fits on-device, without sending identifiable data to servers.
