Baidu is China’s dominant search engine, which has branched out to various fields such as autonomous driving, ride-sharing, AI, and so on. Xiaodu Technology is the company’s hardware division and they have just launched a new AI smartglasses. Let’s take a look at Baidu’s Xiaodu AI Glasses in further detail and what its price in Nepal might be.

Baidu Xiaodu AI Glasses Overview

Design

Design-wise, the new AI Glasses from Baidu look like any regular sunglasses. The only things that particularly stand out are its thicker handles and cameras on the front. It weighs just 45 grams, which is edging towards the heavier end for sunglasses. This is because of all the hardware it has to fit inside.

The information available about these glasses is rather limited, hence we cannot tell if it is available in other shades than black. We will also have to wait and see how it fares against the plethora of options and customisation Ray-Ban Meta offers its users.

Hardware

The Xiaodu AI Glasses from Baidu are equipped with two 16MP ultrawide cameras, which are higher in resolution than the 12MP Meta packs its glasses with. These glasses use these cameras to snap POV images and videos which are stabilised by AI for better results. The lenses also help the glasses recognise whatever it is pointing towards. Additionally, there are four microphones and open-ear anti-leakage speakers handling the audio.

Baidu Xiaodu AI Glasses Hardware

Talking of the battery, Baidu does not exactly mention the cell capacity on the Xiaodu AI Glasses. However, they can apparently last up to 56 hours on standby and over five hours when playing music. Meanwhile, the charging on these glasses is rapid — capable of filling up in just 30 minutes. The brand has not revealed the silicon powering these glasses either.

Software and AI

On the software front, the Xiaodu AI Glasses boot on the DuerOS AI and will likely be integrated with popular Baidu apps like Maps and Baike. These glasses perform six chief functions: real-time Q&A through walk-and-ask queries, calorie recognition, object identification through an encyclopedia feature, audio-visual translation, and intelligent reminders.

What stands out the most about the Xiaodu AI Glasses is that they come with Baidu’s advanced Ernie language model. As a result, these glasses understand and can converse in Chinese, making them more attractive than Ray-Ban Meta in the second most populous country in the world. The latter only supports English, Spanish, French, and Italian as of now.

Baidu Xiaodu AI Glasses Price in Nepal and Availability

These glasses were revealed at the 2024 Baidu World Conference as the “World’s first AI glasses equipped with a native Chinese language model”. However, they have not made it to the market just yet. As per the company, they will be available in the first half of 2025 with a price tag of under CNY 2,100.

These glasses will likely not leave their home country as Xiaodu created them specifically with the Chinese audience in mind. It doesn’t make much sense either since they have really limited functionalities with English. This is why they won’t be available in Nepal either, but if they did, the price for the Xiaodu AI Glasses from Baidu will likely land around NPR 50,000.
