DJI just introduced a smartphone gimbal with a detachable screen—could this be the future of solo content creation?

It's only been a week since DJI announced the Osmo Pocket 4, and it's back again with its new DJI Osmo Mobile 8P in China. At the moment, the main highlight of this gimbal is its design, which can become a game-changer for solo creators. Though other features are similar to its predecessor, the new DJI Smart Tracking 8.0 is another upgrade that is said to improve the creator's shooting experience when making videos in crowded places. In this article, I will discuss the new DJI gimbal, including the expected price of the Osmo Mobile 8P in Nepal, its specifications, and availability.
DJI Osmo Mobile 8P Overview
Detachable controller Screen
Starting with the main highlight, the DJI Osmo Mobile 8P now comes with a 1.4-inch touchscreen controller that mirrors the phone screen. This display is designed to be magnetically attached to the gimbal. This small screen can reach up to 800 nits of brightness, making it suitable for use in direct sunlight as well.

Furthermore, it has a physical button that can serve as a joystick for remote gimbal control. With this controller, you do not need to go back to the phone to switch targets and track them again. This controller can also be used for fluid gimbal movement, zoom, and light adjustment, as it has no fixed directional limits.
This detachable design will make content creation very easy, as you dont have to worry about extra manpower to operate the gimbal. You can just set it in one place and carry that screen with you as a remote controller.
Design and Build
Moving to design, the DJI Osmo Mobile 8P has become noticeably larger than the Osmo Mobile 7P. Now, it has an extended 82mm built-in tripod with a 97mm unfolding radius. Moreover, this gimbal can now hold the mobile up to 11mm thick, which is quite an upgrade from its predecessor.

Similarly, it has a magnetic mounting support with a 40-Newton magnetic clamp that supports heavier phones weighing 170 to 300 grams. Hardware-wise, this guy's built-in tripod has a 3-leg support that can be folded out, along with a telescopic extension rod that slides out, which you can use for high-angle shots and group selfies.
In terms of build, it has a polycarbonate “Pro” dark gray finish. Here, Mobile 8P has an ergonomic slip-resistant design for better gripping. Additionally, it also includes a gimbal, a built-in tripod, a magnetic clamp, and a new screen, bringing the total weight to approximately 386 grams.

Shooting Features
The Osmo Mobile 8P arrives with a 360-degree pan rotation that is well-suited for smooth panoramic tracking and spin effects. The physical stop we saw in the previous DJI model is addressed by this new gimbal, which offers a 360-degree spin.

For more reliable tracking, DJI has introduced Smart Follow 8.0, which is accessible via the DJI Mimo app, another main highlight of this gimbal. With this flagship switch in Mobile 8P from Active Track 7.0, we can expect more reliable subject tracking in Mobile 7P. And DJI also claims to meet our expectations through tracking the target subject even in crowded places, without losing focus when other objects move in the frame.
Moreover, you get a built-in LED on the mounting arm with adjustable color temperature to match indoor and outdoor lighting.
Battery, Connectivity, and Others
Talking about the battery, this gimbal comes with a 3350mAh battery. DJI claims it can support continuous gimbal operation for up to 10 hours. It might take 2 to 4.5 hours to fully charge via USB-C. while the detachable screen has its own internal battery that is claimed to operate for 2.5 hours independently.
For connectivity, Osmo Mobile 8P supports Apple DockKit, allowing for quick pairing via NFC and Bluetooth. It also has a USB-C port to connect your phone while shooting. The gesture control we saw previously remains with us in this new gimbal, too. And if you are an iPhone user, then this gimbal also came with the magnetic quick-release back sticker for easy and faster mounting and removal
