Huawei FreeBuds Neo launched with 11mm drivers, ANC, and up to 40 hours of playback!

Huawei has introduced its latest pair of truly wireless earbuds, the FreeBuds Neo, with a compact design, active noise cancellation, and a focus on comfort. The earbuds come with a new mini-stem design and weigh just 4.8 grams each, while Huawei also claims up to 40 hours of total playback with the charging case. In this article, I will discuss these earbuds in detail, including the expected Huawei FreeBuds Neo price in Nepal, specifications, and availability.

Huawei FreeBuds Neo Overview

Design and Comfort

Starting off, the FreeBuds Neo take a slightly different approach to the usual stem-style TWS design. Instead of a long stem, Huawei has shortened it to create what it calls a mini-stem design. Meanwhile, the charging case gets a rounded “mini shuttle” shape that should be easy to carry around. Each earbud weighs around 4.8 grams, while the case weighs 31.4 grams.

In terms of comfort, Huawei has used a pressure-relieving design intended to distribute pressure more evenly inside the ear. The company says it developed the earbuds using 150 ear profiles and more than 10,000 ear samples. Furthermore, the earbuds have a balanced centre of gravity to help keep them secure during movement. 

For controls, the FreeBuds Neo have a touch-sensitive area covering around 60% of the front side of the stem. Through these controls, users can double-tap to play or pause music and answer calls, triple-tap to skip tracks, swipe to adjust the volume, and press and hold to switch between noise cancellation modes. 

Additionally, you can choose between “Stellar Silver”, “Nebula Pink”, “Ice White”, and “Starry Black” finishes. On top of that, the earbuds also carry an IP55 rating for protection against dust and water splashes. 

Audio and call quality

Moving on to the audio side, the FreeBuds Neo feature an 11mm dynamic driver with a lightweight diaphragm and a claimed frequency range of 10Hz to 48kHz. Huawei has also included LDAC support for higher-bitrate wireless audio, with transmission rates of up to 990kbps on compatible devices.

When paired with supported Huawei phones, the earbuds can support up to 2.3Mbps transmission with 24-bit/48kHz lossless audio. In addition, spatial audio with head tracking is available for a more immersive listening experience. There is also an FPS mode designed to make footsteps and directional sounds more noticeable during gaming.

For calls, the earbuds use three microphones on each bud along with a bone-conduction microphone. Huawei says this setup helps separate the user's voice from surrounding noise. The company also claims the system can maintain voice clarity in environments with background noise of up to 95dB and wind speeds of up to 9m/s.

ANC and app compatibility

One of the main highlights of the FreeBuds Neo is adaptive ANC. Huawei has equipped the earbuds with a third-generation audio chip and a dual-channel noise cancellation system. Here, the adaptive system analyses surrounding noise and adjusts the level of cancellation accordingly. Huawei says it can analyse environmental noise up to 400,000 times per second.

Moving on, the company claims an average noise cancellation depth of up to 30dB across multiple frequencies under specific testing conditions. Besides ANC, the earbuds also offer an awareness mode for situations where you need to hear what is happening around you without removing them.

For controlling these features, the FreeBuds Neo work with the Huawei Audio Connect app on both Android and iOS. The app lets users manage ANC, check battery levels, adjust audio settings, use Find Earbuds, and manage connected devices. Furthermore, the earbuds support simultaneous connection to two devices, making it easier to switch between a phone and another compatible device.

Battery and other features

In terms of battery, the FreeBuds Neo pack a 60mAh battery in each earbud, while the charging case houses a 460mAh battery. Huawei claims up to 10 hours of music playback on a single charge with ANC turned off, while that figure drops to 6.5 hours with ANC enabled. With the charging case, you could get up to 40 hours of total playback with ANC off.

Besides, the charging case uses a USB Type-C port and takes around 70 minutes to fully charge, while the earbuds take around 45 minutes to charge inside the case. In terms of connectivity, the earbuds support Bluetooth 6.0 and dual-device connections.
