With the launch of the Royole FlexPai 1, the first foldable phone was introduced. Since then, there has been significant progress in foldable phone manufacturing. Relatively uncommon, but Apple was not into this big game, really. However, the latest rumors suggest that the long-anticipated foldable iPhone might launch in 2026. And the most anticipated renders are surfacing too. In this article, we will discuss the specifications and rumors about Apple’s foldable phone.
Foldable iPhone Overview
Apple's entry into the foldable game is a bit like a latecomer showing up at the party; everyone's been waiting for them to arrive. Let's wait for one more minute, alright? Oh, I mean one year!
Not the first time!
While Apple wasn’t quick to jump on the foldable trend, the company has been quietly laying the groundwork behind the scenes. The first whispers of an actual Apple foldable device began in 2021, with rumors suggesting a 2023 launch. But here we are in 2025, and it looks like the debut may finally be happening in 2026. The wait could soon be over, as the buzz around Apple’s foldable iPhone is getting louder by the day.
Rumors now focus on a book-style foldable iPhone, likely launching first, after initial experiments with a clamshell and a foldable iPad. Apple has been researching foldable tech for nearly eight years, progressing slowly. Recent leaks from Digital Chat Station and Front Page Tech reveal prototype testing and credible renders. Apple chose a book-style design to address the display crease issue.

Design and Display
According to the latest information, the iPhone Fold will feature a 5.5-inch cover display on the outside and a 7.8-inch inner display when unfolded. The biggest highlight here is the crease, or rather, the near absence of one. Prosser claims Apple is using a pressure-dispersing metal plate, liquid metal components in the hinge, and an in-cell touch panel to achieve a nearly crease-free display. This aligns with earlier reports that Apple has been developing ultra-thin flexible glass specifically to address crease visibility.

In terms of thickness, the iPhone Fold is rumored to measure 9mm when folded and just 4.5mm when unfolded, putting it among the slimmest foldables ever if true. If Apple pulls this off, it could set a new benchmark for foldable hardware design.
Performance, Camera, and Biometrics
On the performance side, the iPhone Fold is expected to run on Apple’s upcoming A20 Pro chipset, paired with Apple’s second-generation C2 modem. It will reportedly feature a high-density battery, which should deliver strong battery life despite the larger display.

Camera-wise, the device is said to feature dual rear cameras housed in a design similar to the iPhone Air’s camera module. There will also be one camera on the cover display and another on the internal screen. However, there is no under-display camera, at least in this first generation.
Another notable detail that aligns with earlier rumors is Apple’s decision to skip Face ID. Instead, the iPhone Fold is expected to use a fingerprint sensor integrated into the power button, which has reportedly been moved to the top of the device. This makes sense given the internal space constraints of foldable hardware.
A New Contender in the Foldable Market
Once Apple officially enters the foldable market, analysts expect a significant boost in overall adoption. Some predict up to 30 percent initial market growth, followed by steady annual growth of around 20 percent. If Apple delivers a refined, crease-free foldable with strong software optimization, it could push foldables into the mainstream much faster.
In terms of size, the iPhone Fold is expected to be more compact than devices like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 or Google Pixel Fold, and closer in philosophy to the Oppo Find N series. This suggests Apple is prioritizing usability and one-handed comfort over sheer screen size.
iPhone Fold: When will it arrive?
As of now, all signs point toward a 2026 launch, though Apple could still delay the final product if it feels the technology is not ready. Given Apple’s history, it would rather be late than release something unfinished. Until Apple makes it official, the safest bet is patience. Until then, we’ll keep our eyes peeled for any more leaks or announcements.
