MediaTek Dimensity 8400 launched with lots of upgrades over its predecessor!

Mediatek Dimensity 8400 launched

MediTek launched its Dimensity 8300 last November and after more than a year, the company finally unveiled its successor: the Dimensity 8400. This new chip claims a whopping 41% improvement in multi-core alongside other pretty interesting changes. This article will explore the upper-midrange SoC Mediatek Dimensity 8400 in depth.

Mediatek Dimensity 8400 Overview

Performance Jump

The MediaTek Dimensity 8400 brings the “All Big Core CPU” paired with a powerful NPU to accelerate on-device Gen-AI performance. This new chipset is highly inspired by the company’s latest flagship, Dimensity 9400 which too skips out on ‘little’ efficiency cores. Furthermore, it is built on TSMC’s 2nd gen 4nm process and roughly competes with the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 from Qualcomm.

Under the hood, it has an octa-cores; 1x Arm Cortex-A725, and 3x Arm Cortex-A725, 4x Arm Cortex-A725 that can reach clock speeds of up to 3.25GHz. This new chipset consumes around 44% less energy and also features 100% more L2 cache, 50% more L3 cache, and 25% more SLC cache than the 8300.

Moreover, on the graphic side, it packs the Mali-G720 GPU which the company claims offers a performance bump of a whopping 24% while consuming 42% less power. The company says that the new GPU works with its Frame Rate Converter Adaptive Gaming Technology 3.0 which optimizes performance in real-time and make the gameplay smoother.

NPU and Camera

The MediaTek Dimesity 8400 also packs NPU 880, which can handle running large language models (LLM) locally, making it capable of generating texts and images. On top of that, it is 20% faster in integer/floating-point operations, improves efficiency by 18%, and is 21% better in Stable Diffusion 1.5 too.
