Redmi 17C 5G debuts with the Dimensity 6300 SoC and a huge 6,000mAh battery!

Xiaomi has officially launched the Redmi 17C 5G as its latest budget smartphone, alongside the regular 4G variant. The new model features a 6.9-inch IPS display, MediaTek Dimensity 6300 chipset, and a large 6,000mAh battery. However, looking at its specifications, the phone is almost identical to its predecessor, the Redmi 15C 5G, which is a little disappointing. In this article, I’ll discuss everything you need to know about the Redmi 17C 5G, including its specifications, availability, and expected price in Nepal.

Redmi 17C 5G Overview

Design and Display

Starting with the design, the Redmi 17C 5G keeps things fairly simple with a flat frame and a rectangular camera module on the rear. It comes in Black, Purple, and Brown color options and measures just 8.01mm in thickness while weighing 211 grams. Despite its large battery, the phone manages to stay relatively slim. It also carries an IP64 rating for protection against dust and water splashes.

Moving on to the display, the Redmi 17C 5G features a large 6.9-inch IPS LCD panel with an HD+ resolution of 1600 x 720 pixels and a 120Hz refresh rate. The higher refresh rate should make scrolling and animations feel smoother, while the 240Hz touch sampling rate can help with a more responsive touch experience, particularly during gaming. 

The display can also reach up to around 810 nits of brightness, which should be adequate for everyday outdoor use, although the HD+ resolution is a little underwhelming for a screen this large.

Performance and Software

Under the hood, the Redmi 17C 5G is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 6300, a 6nm octa-core chipset designed for entry-level 5G smartphones. It is paired with 4GB of LPDDR4X RAM and up to 128GB of UFS 2.2 storage, with a microSD card slot available for additional storage. The setup should be sufficient for everyday tasks such as social media, browsing, streaming, and light multitasking, although the limited RAM means it is not aimed at heavy users or demanding gaming.

On the software front, the phone runs HyperOS 3 based on Android 16 out of the box. This is one of the key differences from the previous generation, which launched with an older version of Android. 

Xiaomi promises two years of major Android updates and up to four years of security patches, which is fairly standard for a phone in this segment. While the software is up to date, the overall hardware package remains fairly entry-level, so the phone is clearly more focused on everyday use and battery endurance than outright performance.

Camera and Battery

For photography, the Redmi 17C 5G features a 50MP primary camera on the rear, accompanied by a secondary sensor. On the front, there is an 8MP selfie camera for selfies and video calls. The camera setup is fairly basic for the segment, but the 50MP main sensor should be capable of handling everyday photography in good lighting.

As for the battery, the Redmi 17C 5G packs a large 6,000mAh battery, which should provide plenty of endurance for regular use. It supports 33W wired fast charging.

The Redmi 17C 5G has officially launched in Singapore with a starting price of SGD 279 for the 4/128GB variant. There is currently no information regarding its availability in the local market.
