Samsung is coming up with an XR headset to go against Apple Vision Pro!

Samsung XR headset Project Moohan

With the recent announcement of Android XR, an operating system for eXtended Reality devices, Google set the stage for Samsung to then unveil their upcoming creation: Project Moohan. This is potentially Samsung’s answer to Apple’s hyped Vision Pro but there’s still ways to go about it. Let’s talk about it briefly.

Samsung’s XR headset: Project Moohan

Android XR

Android XR was announced just a couple of days ago, and it’s an operating system built from the ground up for eXtended Reality devices. XR is an umbrella term that encompasses all the buzzes like AR (Augmented Reality), VR (Virtual Reality), and MR (Mixed Reality). This new operating system is aimed at powering upcoming smart glasses, reality headsets, and everything in between. Think of it as a direct jab to VisionOS powering the Apple headset. And, according to Samsung, the South Korean giant has been working with Google to create such a platform for years now. So with the unveiling of Android XR, it was only appropriate for Samsung to follow suit with one of its own creation: Project Moohan.

Project Moohan

Moohan is a South Korean word meaning ‘infinity’ and Samsung’s goal with this project is to deliver ‘unparalleled, immersive experiences within an infinite space’. Right now, all we have regarding this upcoming headset is an official render. Any kind of specs or technical details haven’t surfaced yet but Samsung does hint to its capabilities.

The upcoming XR headset will be equipped with “state-of-the-art” displays, pass-through abilities, and natural multimodal input mechanisms for ease of use. Since it will be one of the first, if not the first device to run on Android XR, there’ll be Google Maps, YouTube, and most importantly Gemini to play around with. Early reviewers have stated that the ‘AI’ part of this experience was truly one of a kind and worth watching out for but only time will tell on how it’ll play out in the hands of everyday consumers.

When is Samsung’s XR headset coming?

Project Moohan is official today but the headset will likely only be unveiled properly in the upcoming January event alongside Samsung’s S25 series of smartphones. Regular folks will likely only be able to get their hands on it some months after that, so there is still ways to go before Project Moohan can turn into a full-fledged reality. Until then, we’ll keep updating this piece with the latest updates and insights so you don’t miss out on what’s going on in the eXtended part of Reality.
