Behold—Sony’s most premium wireless headphones, "1000X The Collexion", is here in Nepal

If you look at Sony’s flagship headphones, you’ll notice that while they are often praised for incredible ANC and sound quality among other things, their basic plastic build never really gets any fanfare. Well, Sony finally gave in to those criticisms by launching the “1000X The Collexion” a few months ago. Which also happened to mark the 10th anniversary of Sony’s first pair of noise-cancelling headphones—the MDR-1000X. It’s now available in Nepal as well, so let me take you through everything you need to know about the Sony 1000X The Collexion, including its features, specifications, and official price in Nepal.

Sony 1000X The Collexion Overview

Design and build

Of course, the design is what I wanna start with here since this is where The Collexion shines the brightest. It looks mostly similar to the regular WH-1000XM6, but fans of premium build materials are certainly gonna appreciate it more. Available in “Platinum” and “Black” finishes, Sony has gone with a stainless steel hinge that also extends to the headband, earcups wrapped in soft faux leather, and metal buttons for a considerably nicer hands-on feel. 

There’s still no IP rating of any kind, and it weighs 320 grams now (vs 254 grams for the XM6), but at least The Collexion doesn’t feel plasticky anymore.

The company also says these over-ear headphones should be considerably more comfortable to put on for long hours. Thanks to a wider, cushioned headband for a more even weight distribution and a wider set of ear pads. Unfortunately, its hinge no longer folds sideways like the XM6, so you’re gonna have to lay it flat inside the redesigned carrying case instead. Which is actually similar to the older WH-1000XM5. 

Controls and connectivity

Sony 1000X The Collexion has the same touch controls as its XM6 counterpart—next to a couple of buttons at the bottom of the left earcup. It has a noise cancelling/ambient sound button, which is exactly what it sounds like, while Sony has added a “Listening Mode” button that lets you switch between traditional 2-channel stereo listening and 360 Upmix for a more spacious, immersive sound. I’ve personally always found spatial audio to be quite gimmicky for the most part, but maybe something a headphone of this caliber can finally change my mind.

Then there’s the usual 3.5mm jack if you want to go full-analog in your listening sessions, followed by a USB-C port to fill up the battery. The Collexion supports Bluetooth 6.0 for wireless pairing, including Auracast broadcasts. And as you’d expect, you can also pair it with two devices at once thanks to multipoint connection support.

Audio, ANC, and call quality

In terms of audio, Sony says The Collexion uses a “bespoke driver unit”. But looking at the specs, its 30mm dynamic driver feels more or less the same as the one we saw on the WH-1000XM6. With a 4 Hz - 40 kHz frequency response and a 48 Ω (Ohm) impedance.

It also supports the usual SBC, AAC, LDAC, and LC3 Bluetooth codecs—and, based on other reviewers’ objective measurements, these two headphones share a similar frequency-response graph. 

The only difference is that The Collexion has a mild bump around the 20 Hz region for a thumpier bass response, whereas it’s been tuned with a considerable dip at around 7 kHz for recessed trebles. All this is to say that this thing has a warm, bass-heavy sound that we’ve come to expect from Sony’s wireless headphones. It now supports “DSEE Ultimate", though, which is Sony’s proprietary technology that can upscale compressed, low-quality music for a richer listening experience. 

And if you want, you can always customize how it sounds by heading to the “Sony Sound Connect” app and testing out all the built-in equalizers. Or with a little more time, you can tune them (almost) exactly how you’d like with the 10-band equalizer as well. 

The Collexion is also one of the most impressive pairs of headphones when it comes to active noise cancellation (ANC). Sony doesn’t mention the specifics as to how much of the ambient noise we can expect these to get rid of, but most independent tests put it close to what the WH-1000XM6 manages. You can also quickly toggle its transparency mode to hear the outside world by simply cupping your hand on the right earcup. 

There are 6 microphones on each side for a total of 12 mics—alongside Sony’s new V3 processor to isolate your voice from the background noise better.

Battery life

Now, battery life is where Sony 1000X The Collexion kinda disappoints, since its total playtime has actually gone down compared to the XM6. Sony wants you to expect up to 24 hours of music playback with ANC enabled (or 32 hours with ANC off)—while the WH-1000XM6 could go on for 30 / 40 hours. At least it can give you 1.5 hours of listening time with just 5 minutes of charging. And talking about charging, Sony says these headphones take 3.5 hours for a complete refill.
