TECNO POVA 8 Pro 5G brings 144Hz AMOLED display and dedicated gaming chip!

TECNO adds a new member to the POVA series with the introduction of the new POVA 8 Pro 5G as the direct successor to last year’s Tecno Pova 7 Pro. This new phone brings several gaming-focused upgrades in durability, performance, audio, and battery. In this article, I will discuss this gaming phone in detail, including the expected Tecno Pova 8 Pro 5G price in Nepal, specifications, and availability. 

TECNO POVA 8 Pro 5G Overview

Performance and Software

Starting off, the Tecno Pova 8 Pro 5G uses the MediaTek Dimensity 7400 Ultimate 5G chipset, which is built on the 4nm octa-core platform. This is a capable mid-range platform, and its biggest advantage is the balance between performance and efficiency. For everyday tasks such as social media, browsing, multitasking, and switching between several apps, there should be more than enough headroom. 

To sustain this performance, TECNO has fitted a 5000mm² vapor-chamber cooling system to help dissipate heat during longer gaming sessions. This should help the phone maintain more consistent performance and reduce the chances of aggressive thermal throttling.

Memory-wise, it comes with up to 12GB RAM and up to 512GB internal storage. On the software side, the POVA 8 Pro 5G runs HiOS 16 based on Android 16. The interface brings the usual TECNO customisation and AI features, while the high memory and storage configurations should also help keep the phone comfortable for multitasking over time.

Gaming Features

Where the phone becomes more interesting is under heavier workloads. TECNO has added its dedicated P1 gaming chip, which works alongside the main processor to improve gaming performance through frame interpolation. This means the phone is not relying entirely on the Dimensity chipset when trying to deliver higher frame rates.

For gamers, TECNO claims support for up to 144FPS in supported titles, including PUBG MOBILE. Of course, the actual frame rate will depend on the game, graphics settings, and whether the title supports the feature. Still, having a 144Hz panel and dedicated gaming hardware gives the POVA 8 Pro 5G a clear advantage for those of you who spend a lot of time gaming. 

Additionally, the phone also gets an X-axis linear motor for 4D gaming vibration, which can make actions such as shooting and impacts feel more responsive. There is also a Game Network Engine 3.0 for managing network performance during gaming.

Design and Display

In terms of design, TECNO goes for an Interstellar Spaceship-inspired design, with the rear featuring its Alive Matrix Display made up of 177 independently controlled Mini LED lights. These LEDs can respond to various activities, such as calls, notifications, and gaming. However, the inclusion of the triangular camera island remains similar to that of its predecessor.  

Here, you get the option to choose between “Arc White”, “Graphite Black”, and “Tundra Green” finishes. And the phone has also improved its durability as it comes with an IP66/IP68/IP69/IP69K rating so that you can use it without worrying much about damage from accidental exposure to dust and water.

Up front, there is a 6.78-inch AMOLED display with a sharp 2644 × 1208 resolution and a 144Hz refresh rate. The high refresh rate is particularly useful for gaming, but you will also notice the benefit during normal scrolling and animations.

Besides this, the POVA 8 Pro display can reach up to 1,600 nits HBM brightness, which should provide pretty good outdoor visibility even under direct sunlight. TECNO also claims a peak brightness of 4,500 nits, giving the display plenty of brightness headroom for viewing content and using the phone in challenging lighting conditions.

Battery and Camera

For battery, the POVA 8 Pro 5G opts for the higher capacity by packing a 6500mAh battery over the 6000mAh that we saw in its predecessor. With this capacity, the phone should comfortably handle a full day of regular use, even with heavier screen-on time. And for charging, it supports 45W Super Charge, with TECNO claiming that the battery can reach 50% in around 27 minutes.

Along with this, TECNO has also added Battery Self-Healing Technology, which is designed to slow down battery aging. The company claims the battery can recover around 1% of its battery health after every 200 charging cycles through its smart recovery process, helping maintain battery capacity over the long term.

For photography, the POVA 8 Pro 5G uses a 50MP Sony LYTIA 700C main camera with OIS, alongside an 8MP ultrawide camera and a 13MP front-facing camera. With this camera setup, it should deliver good everyday photography, especially in daylight, while the OIS on the main sensor should also help produce sharper shots and more stable videos in lower-light conditions.
