AMD recently unveiled their latest graphics cards, the Radeon RX 7700 XT and 7800 XT at Gamescon 2023. And from the looks of it, they have the potential to become THE GPU of choice for 1440p gaming. In this article, let’s take a look at the specifications, improvements, and expected price in Nepal of the AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT.
AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT Overview:
In this price segment, the RX 7800 XT roughly competes against the RTX 4060 Ti. Its 28.1 billion transistor count is about a 5% increase from its predecessor, the Radeon RX 6800XT. Though on paper, it would seem it the newer gen RX 7800 XT has fewer stream processors (3840<4608), ray accelerators (60<72), and compute units (60<72), the ones on the 7800 XT are more powerful, and deliver more performance than their 6800 XT counterparts.
Similarly, the base and boost frequencies of the RX 7800 XT are 2124 MHz and 2430 MHz respectively. It has 16GB of GDDR6 VRAM with a total memory bandwidth of 624 GB/s. Moreover, the peak compute performance for single and half-precision is 37 TFLOPs and 74 TFLOPs, respectively.
AMD RDNA 3 microarchitecture
Moving on, AMD’s Radeon RX 7000 series GPUs are based on the newer RDNA 3 microarchitecture. Whereas the Radeon RX 7800 XT is manufactured using a combination of 5nm and 6nm technologies.
RX 7000 series GPUs are the first GPUs to be built using chiplet design. Basically, chiplets are small ICs (Integrated Circuits) that do a specific task. A set of such chiplets can be implemented together to make a larger and more complex chip. This has the benefit of customization, power efficiency, and more. It also allows AMD to use different process sizes on the same die. Hence, the 5nm/6nm on the spec sheet.
RDNA 3 is also the first RDNA architecture to have a dedicated media engine. The AMD Radiance Display Engine features support for 12-bit HDR, full coverage of the REC2020 color space, and up to 8K video playback.

Gaming and other specs
AMD is marketing the RX 7800 XT as “The ultimate graphics card for 1440p gaming”. According to the company, it offers 20% more performance per dollar on average than the competition which would include cards like Nvidia’s RTX 3070, RTX 4060 Ti, and RTX 4070. AMD claims smooth 1440p over 60 fps gameplay without any kind of upscaling.

But in the process of achieving these results, the RX 7800 XT does consume more power though. At 263W compared to 200W on the 4070.
Anyway, thanks to the 64MB of 2nd-generation Infinity Cache, game assets will load and render quicker on the new RX 7800 XT, leading to smoother gameplay with higher frame rates. And like other RDNA 3-based GPUs, it supports full hardware-based AV1 encoding and decoding as well. It also has support for AMD’s upcoming FSR 3 technology which now has frame generation and promises up to 3x the number of frames.
