Apple Mac Studio announced with M5 Max and M5 Ultra chips, bringing major AI performance gains!

Apple has officially launched its latest Mac Studio with the company’s new M5 Max and M5 Ultra chips to its compact desktop lineup, alongside the Mac mini M6 and M5 Pro. The new Mac Studio focuses heavily on performance and AI, with the M5 Ultra offering up to 4.3x the peak AI compute performance compared to the previous-generation M3 Ultra. In this article, I will discuss everything about the Mac Studio M5 Max and M5 Ultra, including specifications, availability, and expected price in Nepal.

Performance

Mac Studio M5 Max

Starting with the Mac Studio M5 Max, Apple has focused on improving performance across AI and graphics workloads. The chip comes with up to an 18-core CPU and 40-core GPU, while each GPU core now includes a Neural Accelerator for faster AI processing.

Compared to the previous-generation M3 Max, Apple claims the M5 Max delivers up to 3.9x faster AI performance. It also brings up to 50% faster GPU performance, along with improved ray tracing capabilities for graphics-heavy tasks.

Mac Studio M5 Ultra

Moving to the Mac Studio M5 Ultra, Apple takes the performance even further with up to a 36-core CPU and 80-core GPU. Like the M5 Max, it also features Neural Accelerators in each GPU core, helping improve its AI capabilities.

Apple says the M5 Ultra delivers up to 4.3x the peak AI compute performance compared to the previous-generation M3 Ultra. It also offers up to 1.8x faster graphics and 1.3x higher multithreaded CPU performance. These improvements should benefit demanding workloads such as machine learning, AI development, 3D rendering, and video production.

Memory and Storage

For memory and storage, the Mac Studio M5 Max starts with 36GB of unified memory and 512GB of SSD storage. You can configure it with up to 128GB of unified memory and 8TB of storage, giving you several options depending on your requirements.

Meanwhile, the Mac Studio M5 Ultra starts with 96GB of unified memory and 1TB of SSD storage. The higher-end model can be configured with up to 512GB of unified memory and 16TB of SSD storage, making it the first Mac Studio configuration to offer such high memory and storage capacities.

Connectivity and Ports

On the connectivity side, the Mac Studio M5 Max and M5 Ultra come with Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 for wireless connectivity. Both configurations also include 10Gb Ethernet, so you get fast wired networking without needing to upgrade the Ethernet connection separately.

For physical connections, both models feature four Thunderbolt 5 ports, HDMI, 10Gb Ethernet, and a 3.5mm headphone jack on the back. Around the front, you get two USB-C ports and an SDXC card slot, making it easier to connect accessories or transfer files without reaching around the desktop.

When it comes to external displays, the Mac Studio M5 Max supports up to five displays simultaneously, while the M5 Ultra takes that number to eight. This also makes the higher-end configuration more flexible for users working with multiple screens.

Additionally, the Mac Studio supports genlock over USB-C, allowing it to synchronize its display pipeline with connected cameras and capture equipment. This can be useful for professional video production and broadcast workflows where precise timing is important.

Design and Other Features

Design-wise, the Mac Studio M5 Max and M5 Ultra retain the familiar compact form factor of the previous generation. So, while Apple hasn't made major changes to the exterior, most of the upgrades this time are focused on the hardware inside.

The new Mac Studio also gets an updated Media Engine with hardware acceleration for H.264, HEVC, ProRes, and AV1 video formats. The M5 Ultra goes a step further with twice the video encode and decode engines compared to the M5 Max, allowing it to handle up to 33 streams of 8K ProRes 422 video at 30fps simultaneously.

Beyond that, both models come with support for Apple's latest AI frameworks, including Core AI and MLX, which allow developers to build and run AI models on Apple silicon.

The Mac Studio M5 Max is officially launched in the USA with a starting price of USD 2,499, while the Mac Studio M5 Ultra starts at USD 5,499. 

Apple has not announced its local availability yet. However, if they are announced here, you can expect the starting price of the Mac Studio M5 Max and M5 Ultra in Nepal to be around NPR 3,81,699 and NPR 8,39,899, respectively.
