      Apple Watch Series 12

At yesterday’s September 9 event, Apple unveiled the new Apple Watch Series 12 alongside the Watch Ultra 4 and its latest iPhone lineup, including the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max, as well as its first foldable iPhone, the iPhone Duo. At first glance, the Series 12 looks almost identical to last year’s Apple Watch, but there is a lot more happening underneath.

      Key Highlights

      • The Apple Watch Series 12 retains the familiar 42mm and 46mm design but introduces new ceramic finishes alongside aluminum and titanium options.
      • It is powered by Apple’s new S11 chip, bringing improved performance and supporting newer AI-powered features such as updated Siri and Audio Intelligence.
      • Apple has significantly upgraded health tracking with a redesigned sensor system, more frequent heart-rate and HRV measurements, and the new Readiness feature.
      • Battery life remains rated at up to 24 hours, but faster charging can deliver up to 12 hours of normal use with a 15-minute charge.

Apple has upgraded the processor, completely redesigned the health-sensing system, and added new health and AI-powered features. Despite all these changes, the company has also kept the starting price unchanged. So, while the Series 12 may not look like a major redesign, it could be one of the biggest internal upgrades to the Apple Watch in recent years.

So, what exactly is new with the Series 12? Let’s take a closer look.

      Apple Watch Series 12 Overview

      Design and Display

If you were expecting a completely new Apple Watch design this year, the Series 12 might leave you wanting more. It retains the familiar Apple Watch shape and comes in the same 42mm and 46mm sizes as the previous generation.

That said, Apple has introduced some new finishes, including ceramic models. The company is bringing ceramic back to the Apple Watch lineup after several years, with Pearl White and Night Blue options giving the Series 12 a more premium look. The titanium models are available in Radiant Gold and Natural, while the aluminum versions come in Dark Bronze, Light Gold, Black, and Space Gray.

The display is still a strong part of the package, with an Always-On Retina wide-angle OLED and LTPO3 panel that supports a 1Hz refresh rate and up to 2,000 nits of brightness. The 42mm model gets 374 x 446 pixels, while the 46mm version has 416 x 496 pixels, both at 326ppi. So, you get a sharp, bright display that should remain easy to see outdoors while also being easy on the eyes in darker settings. The aluminum models use Ceramic Shield 2, while the titanium and ceramic versions get a sapphire front crystal for better scratch resistance.

      Performance and AI

Under the hood, the Apple Watch Series 12 gets Apple’s new S11 chip, replacing the S10 from the previous generation. It is the first chip upgrade in two years, bringing improvements to CPU and GPU performance and giving the watch more room for newer features.

The Series 12 runs on watchOS, which brings the usual health, fitness, safety, and connectivity features alongside the newer software additions. The extra performance also helps power Apple’s growing AI features, including the updated Siri and Audio Intelligence. Audio Intelligence can process conversations and let you rewind the last 15 seconds if you missed something, with support for generating notes and highlights coming later.

These features aren’t fully available yet, but the S11 gives the Series 12 more headroom for Apple’s growing AI ambitions.

      Health and Fitness

Health tracking remains one of the biggest reasons to buy an Apple Watch, and the Series 12 brings a major overhaul to the system behind it. Apple has redesigned the sensor array on the back, with more points of contact with the skin and the photodiodes moved toward the center of the array. These photodiodes detect the light reflected back from your skin, helping the watch collect more accurate heart and blood-flow data.

The result is much more frequent health tracking. The Series 12 can sample your heart rate every five seconds throughout the day and HRV every five minutes, with Apple claiming its most accurate heart-rate sensing yet in a wearable.

That extra data also powers Readiness. If you’re familiar with devices like Whoop, Aura, or even Fitbit Air, the concept will feel familiar. It gives you a simple score showing how recovered and ready your body is for the day, ranging from “not great” to “let’s go.” It looks at your workouts, Vitals, and sleep, and the score can change throughout the day as your metrics change.

Beyond this, the Series 12 covers the usual health features, including ECG, Blood Oxygen, sleep tracking and Sleep Score, cycle tracking, irregular heart rhythm notifications, and sleep apnea and hypertension notifications. It also brings safety features like Fall Detection, Crash Detection, Emergency SOS, and Medical ID, giving the Watch a role beyond just tracking workouts and health metrics.

Overall, Apple is moving beyond simply collecting health data and putting more emphasis on making it easier to understand and useful in everyday life.

      Connectivity, Controls and Audio

For connectivity, the Series 12 supports Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, and cellular connectivity on supported models. The cellular version can handle calls, messages, and other connected features without always needing your iPhone nearby, making it more useful when you're out for a run or simply don't want to carry your phone.

Controls remain familiar, with the Digital Crown and side button handling most navigation and interactions. Apple has kept the overall control system simple, so moving between apps, notifications, workouts, and other features should feel familiar to existing Apple Watch users.

The Watch also comes with a built-in speaker and microphone for calls, Siri, and other audio features. Combined with the new AI capabilities, the hardware gives the Series 12 more ways to handle quick interactions without reaching for your phone.

      Battery and Charging

The Apple Watch Series 12 keeps the same 24-hour battery life as its predecessor, which means you’ll still be charging it roughly once a day depending on how you use it. Low Power Mode can stretch that to up to 38 hours, while Apple rates it for up to 10 hours of outdoor workouts.

Charging is where things get more convenient. The Series 12 is fast-charge capable, reaching up to 80% in around 30 minutes. A quick 15-minute top-up can provide up to 12 hours of normal use, while just 5 minutes of charging can give you up to 10 hours of sleep tracking. So, while the battery capacity itself hasn't changed much, the fast charging makes keeping the Watch topped up less of a hassle.

      Health App and Tracking

Apple has also revamped the Health app, bringing more of your health data together in one place. It now provides a daily summary of key metrics, giving you a quick look at how your vitals are tracking, along with your Readiness score and other health insights. The app will also use AI to provide personalized insights and suggestions based on your health and activity data.

Importantly, these features do not require a subscription. However, several of the new features are not available yet and are expected to roll out later this year. Apple has not provided a specific release date for them.
