The ever-so-popular Zenbook 14 from Asus recently received a beefy upgrade with new Intel Core Ultra chipsets. And it’s now officially available in Nepal as well. In this article, let’s talk about the design, features, upgrades, official price in Nepal, and availability of the Asus Zenbook 14 OLED 2024 (UX3405).

What is Intel Core Ultra?

Before we get into the laptop itself, let’s take a crash course on the new Intel Core Ultra chipsets.

The Core Ultra is a new lineup of processors based on Intel 4 architecture. They feature much more powerful Intel Arc integrated graphics over the Iris Xe in previous Intel Core models. Besides that, they are said to be much more efficient and less taxing on the battery life. Finally, they also feature a dedicated Neural Processing Unit (NPU) for accelerating AI-related tasks.

Intel Core Ultra Chipset

All in all, the new Core Ultra chips are a step in the new direction. One thing to note is that although integrated graphics, AI workflow, and battery life are greatly improved, CPU performance in itself doesn’t see a massive leap over the existing Intel Core counterparts.

Asus Zenbook 14 OLED 2024 Overview:

Performance: Intel Meteor Lake

The main highlight of the new Zenbook 14 is what’s powering it inside. The Zenbook will now run on Intel’s Meteor Lake chips. It can be configured with a Core Ultra 5 125H, Core Ultra 7 155H, and even a Core Ultra 9 185H.

The processors have up to 16 Cores with 4/6 Performance cores and 8 Efficiency cores. There are also new LPE cores (x2) that are optimized for lightly threaded very low-power tasks.

As I said before, you can expect the CPU performance of these chips to be close to the Core i5-13500H, Core i7-13700H, and Core i9-13900H respectively.

But there’s a massive boost when it comes to the integrated graphics on the new Zenbook.  According to Intel, there’s up to a 20% boost when compared to the Iris Xe powering the previous generation. That’s pretty impressive.

And if you were wondering about the competition, independent reviewers have positioned the new Arc graphics to be just as good or even better than the Radeon 780M in the Ryzen 7 7840U.

The new Meteor Lake chipsets also allow for faster memory: up to 96GB of DDR5 and up to 64GB of LPDDR5X.  But the Zenbook we are talking about here can only be configured up to 32GB of LPDDR5X at 7467 MT/s and up to 1TB of NVME Gen 4 SSD.

Battery Life

One significant upgrade over existing Intel notebooks is the improvement in battery life. Most reviewers have reached a general consensus along the lines of…

“Intel has finally caught up to AMD and Apple when it comes to battery life on thin and light notebooks”.

As such, you can expect a leap in efficiency and endurance in the new Asus Zenbook 14 UX3405.

The new Zenbook 14 (Meteor Lake) still houses a respectable 75Wh battery but it now lasts 9 hours and 12 minutes on light browser load instead of 6 hours and 2 minutes with the older i7-1360p chip according to Dave 2D. Official estimations for the battery life stretch to 15 hours but that’s highly unlikely on regular usage. You can charge the new Zenbook 14 with up to 65W via USB-C.

Design and Display

Like always, the Zenbook 14 sports a premium feeling design. The all-aluminum build and compact form factor see little change here. But thanks to the efficient processors, the 14-inch chassis is even slimmer (14.9mm compared to 16.9mm) and lighter (1.20-1.29 kg compared to 1.39kg) than its predecessor.

We also get to see the unique lines aesthetic that we saw previously on the lid of the Zenbook S13 OLED. But unlike the plasma ceramic material there, the lid is made of aluminum on Zenbook 14. The new Zenbook is available with “Ponder Blue” and “Foggy Silver” color options. You also get the iconic “Ergolift hinge” that can open to 180°.

Moving on to the display, you can configure the Zenbook 14 (Meteor Lake) with a 3K OLED panel that can go up to 120Hz. FHD display with 60Hz is also sold in some markets. But besides the difference in resolution and refresh rate, all variants of the new Zenbook enjoy 100% DCI-P3 coverage, up to 600 nits of HDR peak brightness, excellent contrast,  VESA CERTIFIED Display HDR True Black 600, TÜV Rheinland-certification, and an 87% screen to body ratio. Oh, and there’s also a touchscreen variant with stylus support.

The Zenbook 14 with Meteor Lake now houses 2 Thunderbolt 4 ports, alongside a USB A port, and HDMI port. There’s also a 3.5mm jack for your audio needs. Similarly, there’s dual-band WiFi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3. Similarly, it features a full-sized, backlit keyboard with a 1.4mm key travel and dished keycaps (0.2mm). While it lacks a dedicated number pad, it includes the ErgoSense touchpad with NumberPad 2.0. The top-mounted 1080p webcam has 3D Noise Reduction, and the audio setup consists of two Harmon Kardon-tuned speakers with Dolby Atmos, complemented by a dual-mic array.
