iPhone 18 Pro Max with a variable-aperture camera is coming to Nepal pretty soon

Apple has officially announced the iPhone 18 Pro Max alongside the iPhone 18 Pro, AirPods 5, Watch Ultra 4, and more. As the larger model in its latest Pro lineup, the phone brings a huge 6.9-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display and up to 45 hours of video playback, the longest battery life yet on an iPhone. It also features a 48MP variable-aperture main camera and the new A20 Pro chip. In this article, I will cover everything you need to know about the iPhone Pro Max, including its specifications, availability, and expected price in Nepal.

iPhone 18 Pro Max Overview

Design and Display

Starting with the design, the iPhone 18 Pro Max follows the same overall design language as the 18 Pro, featuring an aluminum unibody construction with Ceramic Shield protection on both the front and back. It also comes with the same four finishes: Black, Silver, Glacier, and Burgundy, with a color-matched glass back.

As the name suggests, the main difference here is in the size. The 18 Pro Max measures 163.4 x 78 x 8.75mm and weighs 249g. While it has the same thickness as the Pro, it is noticeably heavier than its sibling. For durability, it has an IP68 rating against dust and water, with the phone rated to withstand a maximum depth of 6 meters for up to 30 minutes.

Moving on to the display, the iPhone 18 Pro Max features a larger 6.9-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display with a 2868 x 1320-pixel resolution and 460ppi compared with the 18 Pro. Other than that, the Pro Max offers similar features such as ProMotion with an adaptive refresh rate of up to 120Hz, offering smooth scrolling and animations.

Likewise, the iPhone 18 Pro Max also gets the redesigned Dynamic Island introduced with the new Pro lineup. It not only provides more room for information but can also display up to three Live Activities at once.

Performance and Software

Under the hood, the iPhone 18 Pro Max is powered by the same A20 Pro chip as the 18 Pro, built on a 2nm process. It features a six-core CPU with two Super Cores and four efficiency cores, alongside a seven-core GPU with integrated Neural Accelerators. Apple says the CPU is up to 20% faster and the GPU delivers up to 40% higher graphics performance than the A19 Pro. It also gets 50% more memory bandwidth and a 32-core Dual Neural Engine for on-device AI processing.

To better manage heat during demanding tasks such as gaming and video editing, the phone also has a redesigned vapor-chamber cooling system with three times the surface area of the one used in the iPhone 17 Pro. Apple claims this allows the iPhone 18 Pro Max to deliver up to 40% higher sustained performance than the iPhone 17 Pro.

On the software side, the iPhone 18 Pro Max runs on iOS 27, which introduces the new Liquid Glass design and several system-level improvements. It also brings deeper Apple Intelligence integration, improved Search, and connectivity features such as faster AirDrop and iPhone Handoff, which lets you use the same phone number across two iPhones, depending on carrier support.

Camera and Battery

The iPhone 18 Pro Max carries the same triple-camera setup as the 18 Pro, with 48MP sensors across the Main, Ultra Wide, and Telephoto cameras.

Main Camera with Variable Aperture

Starting with the main camera, the phone features a 48MP Fusion sensor paired with a physical variable-aperture lens that can switch between f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8, and f/4.0. The wider f/1.48 aperture allows more light to enter the lens, with Apple claiming around 50% better low-light performance. Meanwhile, the narrower apertures keep more of the scene in focus and can also create a starburst effect around bright light sources.

The camera supports 24mm and 48mm focal lengths, along with second-generation sensor-shift optical image stabilization and 100% Focus Pixels. It can capture 24MP and 48MP photos and offers an optical-quality 2x option at 48mm.

Ultra Wide and Telephoto Cameras

The Ultra Wide camera has also been upgraded to a 48MP Fusion sensor with a 13mm focal length and 120-degree field of view. It supports both 48MP photography and macro shots.

For zoomed-in photography, the 48MP Fusion Telephoto camera offers a 100mm equivalent focal length with 4x optical zoom. It also provides an 8x optical-quality option at 200mm, while digital zoom goes up to 40x. The telephoto lens has an f/2.8 aperture, a tetraprism design, 3D sensor-shift optical image stabilization, and autofocus.

The Pro Max also offers more manual controls in the native Camera app, allowing users to adjust settings such as aperture, shutter speed, and white balance. It also includes an on-screen histogram for monitoring exposure. Photographic Styles 3 further lets users adjust elements such as texture and grain while keeping the changes reversible.

For selfies and video calls, the phone features an 18MP Center Stage front camera with autofocus. It can automatically adjust the framing to keep the subject in view, while also supporting Dual Capture and tap-to-zoom and rotate controls.

The biggest advantage of the Pro Max over the regular 18 Pro comes in the battery department. It offers up to 45 hours of video playback and up to 30 hours of typical use, making it the longest-lasting iPhone yet. In comparison, the 18 Pro offers up to 36 hours of video playback.

For charging, the iPhone 18 Pro Max can reach around 50% charge in 15 minutes, while a quick 5-minute charge can provide up to 7 hours of video playback, according to Apple.

AI Features

On the AI front, the iPhone 18 Pro Max gets the same Apple Intelligence features as the 18 Pro through iOS 27. Siri gets a major upgrade with support for personal context, on-screen awareness, and the ability to perform actions across supported apps.

Other additions include Writing Tools, Clean Up and Extend for photos, improved dictation, and natural-language actions in Shortcuts. The new Apple Reference Image feature can also help determine whether an image is an original photo or has been generated or significantly edited using AI.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at USD 1,299 for the 256GB model in the global market. As for Nepal, the phone has yet to be officially announced for the local market. But when it is launched here, we expect the iPhone 18 Pro Max price in Nepal to be around NPR 288,000, although the actual price could vary depending on taxes and other local factors.

Should You Buy the iPhone 18 Pro or iPhone 18 Pro Max?

The iPhone 18 Pro Max is mainly aimed at users who want a bigger screen and the longest battery life possible. However, it also comes at a higher price, while the core experience remains largely the same as the regular 18 Pro.

For most users, the iPhone 18 Pro makes more sense as the better-value option. You get the same A20 Pro chip, camera system, and software experience in a smaller and lighter package. But if you are willing to pay the premium for the larger 6.9-inch display and significantly better battery endurance, the iPhone 18 Pro Max is the one to go for.
