iPhone 18 Pro to launch soon in Nepal with a 48MP variable-aperture camera and A20 Pro chip

Apple has officially launched the iPhone 18 Pro along with the 18 Pro Max, Duo, Watch Series 12, and more. While the exterior remains familiar, the new generation brings meaningful upgrades across the camera system, performance, and battery. Apple has also introduced several new photography and video tools, alongside deeper Apple Intelligence integration in iOS 27. In this article, I will discuss everything you need to know about the iPhone 18 Pro, including its specifications, availability, and expected price in Nepal.

iPhone 18 Pro Overview

Design and Display

Starting with the design, the iPhone 18 Pro doesn't bring a major visual overhaul this year. Apple has retained the overall Pro-series design, including the aluminum construction and glass back, but has refreshed the available finishes. The phone comes in Black, Silver, Glacier, and Burgundy, with the glass back color-matched to the frame. It is also said to be slightly thicker than its predecessor, the iPhone 17 Pro, with the added thickness coming from the larger battery and updated camera hardware.

On the front, the iPhone 18 Pro continues with a 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display and ProMotion with an adaptive refresh rate of up to 120Hz, offering the same smooth scrolling experience as the previous generation. The panel can reach up to 3,000 nits of peak brightness, delivering clear visibility even under direct sunlight. Likewise, it retains features such as the Always-On display, HDR, True Tone, and an anti-reflective coating.

Redesigned Dynamic Island

The more noticeable change on the display is the Dynamic Island. Apple has made the cutout around 35% narrower, giving the display a little more usable space while retaining its existing functionality. More importantly, the redesigned Dynamic Island can now accommodate up to three Live Activities simultaneously, compared with two on earlier iPhone models. This should make it easier to keep track of multiple ongoing activities, such as a timer, delivery status, or live sports score, without switching between apps.

Performance 

A20Pro: Apple's First 2nm iPhone Chip

Under the hood, the iPhone 18 Pro is powered by Apple’s new A20 Pro chip, which is built on a 2nm process for the first time on an iPhone. The smaller process allows Apple to fit more transistors into the chip while improving its performance and efficiency.

The A20 Pro features a six-core CPU with two Super Cores and four efficiency cores. Apple says the Super Cores are up to 20% faster, while its seven-core GPU delivers up to 40% higher graphics performance than the A19 Pro. It also gets 50% more memory bandwidth and integrated Neural Accelerators. Together, these improvements give the phone more headroom for demanding workloads, particularly graphics-intensive games and other tasks that put sustained pressure on the chip.

For AI and computational photography, the A20 Pro uses a Dual 16-core Neural Engine, giving it 32 cores in total. Apple says this provides twice the AI processing power, allowing the phone to handle more demanding AI tasks directly on the device. This also benefits features that rely on on-device processing, including Apple's latest Apple Intelligence capabilities. 

Cooling System

Apple has also redesigned the thermal system to help the A20 Pro maintain its performance for longer. The new chip packaging places the memory beside the silicon rather than directly in its thermal path, allowing the silicon to connect directly to the vapor chamber. The vapor chamber itself has three times the surface area of the one used in the iPhone 17 Pro, with graphite, copper, and recycled stainless steel used as part of the cooling system.

With more surface area available to dissipate heat, the iPhone 18 Pro should be better equipped to handle sustained workloads without performance throttling as quickly when the device gets hot. Apple claims the new thermal design enables up to 40% higher sustained performance than the iPhone 17 Pro, which should be useful for extended gaming, video editing, and other intensive tasks.

Camera

The camera system is one of the biggest areas of change on the iPhone 18 Pro. Apple has retained the three-camera setup, but all three rear cameras now use 48MP sensors. The headline upgrade, however, is the new variable aperture on the main camera, which gives the phone more control over how much light enters the lens and how much of a scene stays in focus.

Fusion Main Camera with Variable Aperture

The iPhone 18 Pro features a 48MP Fusion Main camera with a physical variable aperture. Unlike a fixed-aperture smartphone camera, its lens can change between f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8, and f/4.0 depending on the shooting conditions or the settings chosen by the user. Apple can also adjust the aperture automatically to balance light and depth of field.

In simple terms, the aperture controls how much light enters the camera. At f/1.48, the lens opens wider and lets in more light, which is particularly useful for indoor and low-light photography. Apple claims around 50% better low-light performance at this setting. The f/1.8 setting provides a more balanced combination of light and depth, while narrowing the aperture to f/2.8 or f/4.0 keeps more of the scene in focus. This can be useful when photographing groups or landscapes where you want subjects farther from the camera to remain sharp.

The narrower f/4.0 setting can also be used to create a starburst effect around bright light sources. So, rather than being just another camera specification, the variable aperture gives the main camera more flexibility in different shooting situations.

The main camera also supports 24mm and 48mm focal lengths, with second-generation sensor-shift optical image stabilization and 100% Focus Pixels. It can capture 24MP and 48MP high-resolution photos, while also providing an optical-quality 2x option at 48mm.

Fusion Ultra Wide

The Ultra Wide camera has also received a resolution upgrade, moving to a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide sensor. It has a 13mm focal length with a 120-degree field of view and an f/2.2 aperture, making it suitable for capturing wider landscapes, architecture, and group shots. It also supports 48MP photography and macro photography.

Fusion Telephoto

For zoomed-in shots, the iPhone 18 Pro uses a 48MP Fusion Telephoto camera with a 100mm equivalent focal length, giving it a 4x optical zoom option. The lens maintains the same 100mm focal length and f/2.8 aperture as the previous generation, but Apple has upgraded the underlying sensor from 12MP to 48MP. The same camera can also provide an 8x optical-quality view at 200mm, giving the phone more flexibility when shooting distant subjects.

The telephoto camera uses a tetraprism design, along with 3D sensor-shift optical image stabilization and autofocus. Apple also claims an overall optical-quality zoom range of up to 8x, while digital zoom can go up to 40x.

Pro Camera Controls

Apple has also expanded the amount of manual control available in the native Camera app. The iPhone 18 Pro now lets users manually adjust settings such as aperture, shutter speed, and white balance, while an on-screen histogram provides a way to monitor exposure.

This is particularly useful for photographers and creators who want more predictable results instead of relying entirely on the phone's automatic processing. For example, changing the shutter speed can help freeze fast-moving subjects or intentionally introduce motion blur, while adjusting the aperture lets users control the amount of light and depth of field.

Alongside these controls, the iPhone 18 Pro also gets Photographic Styles 3, which gives users more control over elements such as texture and grain while keeping the adjustments reversible.

Center Stage Front Camera

Talking about the front camera, the iPhone 18 Pro features an upgraded 18MP Center Stage front camera with autofocus. It can automatically adjust the framing during photos and video calls, keeping the subject in view even when they move around the frame. The camera also supports Center Stage video calls, Dual Capture, and tap-to-zoom and rotate controls, giving users more flexibility when taking selfies or recording themselves.

Video Features

The iPhone 18 Pro also brings several improvements to video recording, particularly for creators who want more control over their footage. Alongside 4K Dolby Vision recording at up to 60fps, Apple has added new tools for subject tracking, post-recording adjustments, and audio control.

Smarter Focus Tracking

One of the new additions is Smart Focus Tracking, which automatically keeps a selected subject in focus as they move through the frame. This can be useful when recording people, pets, or other moving subjects without manually adjusting focus. Apple has also made its Cinematic video tools more flexible, allowing users to apply certain cinematic effects after recording. This gives creators more freedom to refine their footage during editing.

Better Audio and Pro Video Tools

The iPhone 18 Pro gets an improved AudioMix, which can now work with music alongside dialogue and background sounds, giving users more control over the audio balance in their videos. For more advanced workflows, it supports ProRes RAW, Apple Log 2, and 4K ProRes recording at up to 60fps with external recording. Apple has also added 4K Dolby Vision time-lapse and improved low-light video recording.

Apple Intelligence

The new iPhone 18 Pro also gets a deeper integration of Apple Intelligence through iOS 27. The system combines on-device processing with Private Cloud Compute for tasks that require additional processing, while keeping personal information private.

Smarter Siri

Siri gets one of the biggest changes with a new dedicated experience. It can now understand personal context from information across apps such as Mail, Messages, and Calendar, allowing it to provide more relevant responses based on what is already on the iPhone. It can also understand what is currently displayed on the screen and take actions across supported third-party apps.

The company says Siri can work with more than 300,000 apps, including WhatsApp, Audible, Outlook, Notability, and Tripsy. There is also a dedicated Siri app with private iCloud syncing, along with more expressive voices and deeper integration with the Camera and Writing Tools.

AI Features

Beyond Siri, Apple Intelligence adds improvements across several parts of iOS 27. Writing Tools can help rewrite and refine text, while the Phone app gains new intelligence features. Natural-language actions are also coming to Shortcuts, alongside improved dictation and a Notify Me feature in Safari that can alert users when specific information becomes available.

For photos, Clean Up can remove unwanted elements from images, while Extend can expand a photo beyond its original frame. The iPhone 18 Pro also supports Spatial Reframing, giving users more flexibility when adjusting spatial photos and videos.

Apple Reference Image and AI Content Authentication

Another interesting addition is Apple Reference Image, a system designed to help identify whether an image is an original photograph or has been generated or significantly edited using AI. It signs image data at the pixel level and creates an unalterable reference that can be used to verify the image's history.

The reference information can be stored through Private Cloud Compute, while AI-generated or edited content can also carry SynthID information. This should provide greater transparency around the origin of digital images as AI-generated content becomes increasingly common.

Note: Apple Reference Image capture will not be available at launch in China or the European Union due to local regulations, although users in the EU can still develop and view reference images.

Battery and Software

Moving on to the battery, the iPhone 18 Pro brings a noticeable improvement over its predecessor. It offers up to 36 hours of video playback and up to 24 hours of typical use, making it the longest-lasting iPhone Pro model so far. For charging, Apple says the phone can reach around 50% charge in 15 minutes, while a quick 5-minute charge can provide up to 6 hours of video playback.

On the software side, the iPhone 18 Pro runs on iOS 27, which introduces Apple's Liquid Glass design and several changes to the overall iPhone experience. The update also brings deeper Apple Intelligence integration, improved Search, and new connectivity features.

According to Apple, AirDrop is now up to 80% faster, while the new iPhone "Handoff" feature allows users to use the same phone number to work across two iPhones, although availability depends on the carriers.

The iPhone 18 Pro has officially launched globally with a starting price of USD 1,199 for the base 256GB configuration. When the phone is announced in the local market, we can expect the iPhone 18 Pro price to be around NPR 264,000. Here, the final price will vary depending on local taxes and other market factors.

Is the iPhone 18 Pro worth the upgrade?

The iPhone 18 Pro brings some meaningful upgrades, especially to its camera system. With 48MP sensors across all three rear cameras and a new variable-aperture main camera, it offers more flexibility for both photography and video. The A20 Pro chip, improved cooling, and longer battery life also make it a better overall package.

However, if you are already using the iPhone 17 Pro, the upgrade may not feel necessary if exceptional photography is not your priority. Unless you really want the new camera features and don't mind paying the higher price, you can comfortably stick with the 17 Pro. And if you are coming from the iPhone 16 Pro or an older model, the improved cameras, performance, battery life, and new features make the iPhone 18 Pro a much more worthwhile upgrade.
