Google testing WhatsApp video call integration in messages

Google is testing a new feature that allows users to start WhatsApp video calls directly from Google Messages. Currently, video calls in Google Messages are defaulted to Google Meet, but this could change in the future. This article will discuss the upcoming WhatsApp video call integration in messages.

WhatsApp Video Call Integration Rumors

The feature was found in an APK teardown of Google Messages (version 20250131) by Android Authority. If both users have WhatsApp installed, tapping the video call button will start a WhatsApp call. If the recipient does not have WhatsApp, the call will fall back to Google Meet.

Right now, Google Messages only supports Google Meet for video calls. If the caller doesn’t have Meet installed, Messages prompts them to install it before making a call. This applies to both individual and group chats.

Future Changes and Availability

For now, the WhatsApp integration only works in private chats. Group chats will still rely on Google Meet. It is unclear if users will get an option to choose between WhatsApp and Google Meet before initiating a call.

WhatsApp Video Call Integration Availability

Google has not announced an official release date. Since this feature was found in a teardown, there is no guarantee it will be publicly released. It may first appear in beta versions before a wider rollout.
