....but can this unique cuff-style design actually compete with traditional TWS earbuds?

Following the massive wave of interest in open-form audio, Xiaomi has officially entered the Chinese market with its Xiaomi Clip On Earbuds. These new Clip-On earbuds are a completely new design compared to most Xiaomi TWS models. With these new pairs of buds, Xiaomi has moved away from traditional in-ear silicone tips to introduce a new cuff-like fit. On paper, this looks like Xiaomi's most ambitious attempt yet at entering the growing open-ear audio segment. In this article, I will discuss these new earbuds in detail, including the expected price of the Xiaomi Clip-On Earbuds in Nepal, specifications, and availability.
Xiaomi Clip-On Earbuds Overview
Design and Comfort
Starting with the charging case, the Xiaomi Clip-On Earbuds arrive with a squarish shape case with a smooth matte finish. While the inner part of the case includes a pair of earbuds with a soft, matte comfort band and a glossy metallic look. Here, you can choose between “Satin Gold”, “Pearl White”, “Iris Purple”, and “Basalt Black” finishes. Likewise, it comes with an IP57 rating against dust and water, so you can use them during sweaty workouts and light rain without worrying about the buds getting damaged, though you need to keep the case dry.

Moving on, these Clip-On earbuds feature a lightweight 5.5 gram profile and a cuff-style, open-ear design that clips onto the side of your ear, unlike traditional in-ear earbuds that can feel tiring after a long session. If you are someone who wants earbuds that not only offer comfort but also provide awareness of your surroundings while working or listening to music, these might be the option you consider.
Apart from their lightweight profile, Xiaomi Clip-On Earbuds feature a flexible, memory-titanium wire bridge and optimized clamping force. So that the buds sit securely in your ear for long hours without causing ear fatigue or pinching your cartilage.
Audio and Call Quality
Under the hood, Xiaomi Clip-On Earbuds come with an 11mm dynamic driver and a Microcrystalline metal-coated diaphragm, designed for an open-ear, cuff-style fit to deliver a good listening experience. And for High-Res audio, these earbuds support the LHDC 5.0 codec alongside AAC and SBC codecs. As I mentioned earlier, the open-ear design carries a natural risk of sound leakage. So to minimize this, Xiaomi claims to use directional sound transmission and reverse sound waves to keep the music and media relatively private from those around you.

For calls, Xiaomi uses a triple-microphone array on each bud, paired with a bone-conduction microphone. From this combination, we can expect this Clip-On to work reasonably well at filtering out background noise. This setup is expected to improve voice clarity while reducing surrounding noise during calls.
While these clip-on earbuds prioritize situational awareness over traditional ANC, Xiaomi claims to use a Super AI companionship to narrow this gap on the software side. Here, this includes the live transcription, AI-generated summaries, and real-time translation capabilities for up to 21 languages powered by the XiaoAI assistant.

Battery, Connectvity, and others
In terms of battery, the Xiaomi Clip-On Earbuds pack a 60mAh battery in each bud and a 510mAh battery in the case. According to Xiaomi, the earbuds can deliver up to 9 hours per bud and 38 hours with the case in AAC mode. When you switch to High-res LHDC 5.0 mode, playtime is limited to 6 hours per bud and up to 25 hours with the charging case in a single charge. And if you don't have time to fully charge your earbuds, Xiaomi claims 4 hours of use with just 10 minutes of charging.

For connectivity, these clip-on earbuds use Bluetooth 5.4 for faster and more stable wireless connections. It also supports LE audio, HFP, A2DP, and AVRCP for a versatile range of protocols. This also gives up to 10 meters of area coverage for the wireless connection.
Moreover, you can use the Xiaomi Earbuds App, available on both the Play Store and the Apple App Store, to customize the listening experience and gesture controls, and manage dual-device connectivity with these new Xiaomi Clip-On Earbuds. Also, Xiaomi has worked hard to integrate these earbuds into the Apple ecosystem by providing official native support for Apple's Find My network directly from the charging case and the individual buds. Interestingly, this level of Apple ecosystem support is still quite rare among Android-focused audio brands.
Though the overall features of this new open-ear clip-on from Xiaomi look quite promising on paper, I feel they have focused more on comfort and awareness than on noise cancellation and other features.
