Xiaomi is moving ahead with plans to develop its own proprietary chipset, aiming to reduce reliance on Qualcomm and MediaTek. This move comes as part of China’s ongoing push to lessen its dependence on foreign technology and heighten tension with the United States and Western superpowers. In this article, we will discuss furthermore about the upcoming Xiaomi Chipsets.

Xiaomi New Chipsets Overview

Production and Launch Plans

Xiaomi 14 Ultra Design

Xiaomi’s in-house chipset is set to enter mass production in 2024. The first smartphones featuring the new chip are expected to launch in 2025. Well, there is no certainty which phone will this chip be debuted on, but it has been expected that the Xiaomi 16 series is one of the potential starting points for the new hardware.

The new chipset is set to use TSMC’s 3nm process, which suggests it could be a solid, high-performance processor. Xiaomi has already finished the tape-out for its first 3nm chip. They’re going with TSMC because, well, China still doesn’t have access to EUV tech. But considering how fast China’s catching up in chip development, they might just challenge TSMC down the line with a fully homegrown supply chain.

By creating its own chipset, Xiaomi could offer an alternative to the chips currently dominating the Android market from Qualcomm and MediaTek. Additionally, the new chipset may help China strengthen its position in the face of global trade restrictions.

Research and Development

Xiaomi plans to significantly boost its R&D spending. The company is set to invest CNY 30 billion (around $4.1 billion) in 2025, up from CNY 24 billion ($3.3 billion) in 2024. The new chipset project is expected to be a key part of this increased budget.

Beyond Smartphones

Xiaomi’s proprietary chipset may also play a role in the company’s other ventures, such as electric vehicles and the Internet of Things (IoT). But there is still limited information on how exactly the new chipset will differentiate itself from current market offerings like Qualcomm’s Snapdragon or MediaTek’s Dimensity chips. Additionally, pricing and specific performance details have yet to be revealed.
