AMD announces “Ryzen 8040HX” series of laptop processors with minor upgrades

AMD has announced its new “Ryzen 8040HX” series of high-performance laptop processors, featuring up to 16 cores and boost speeds of up to 5.4 GHz. That said, the company isn’t making a big leap in architecture this time since it’s just a rebrand of the Ryzen 7045HX series from back in 2023. In this article, we’ll discuss the AMD Ryzen 8040HX lineup’s key features, specifications, and more.

Similar architecture, familiar specs

As mentioned before, the Ryzen 8040HX is a simple refresh of the Ryzen 7045HX series, codenamed “Dragon Range“. As a result, the 8040HX CPUs aren’t that different from their 7045HX counterpart.

For example, the Ryzen 9 8945HX retains the same core specs as the Ryzen 9 7945HX, offering 16 performance cores based on AMD’s Zen 4 architecture. It also keeps the 80MB of total cache and an adjustable TDP range from 55W to 75W. It’s got the same Radeon 610M “RDNA2” integrated graphics (iGPU), alongside the same 2.5 GHz of base clock and 5.4 GHz of boost clock speed.

Likewise, the Ryzen 7 8840HX is the exact same as the Ryzen 9 7845HX, and the Ryzen 7 8745HX is the same as the Ryzen 7 7745HX. The only difference in this lineup is that the Ryzen 9 8940HX has a 100 MHz higher base clock speed compared to the Ryzen 7 7940HX.

Other than this, all AMD Ryzen 8040HX series processors support up to 64GB of DDR5-5200 memory. They’re built on TSMC’s 5nm FinFET node for the CPU cores and 6nm FinFET node for the I/O (input/output) die. We expect gaming laptops from Asus, Acer, MSI, Lenovo, and other brands with these CPUs to hit the shelves in the coming months.
