Huawei Mate 90 Pro Max Overview
Design and Display
Starting with the design, the Huawei Mate 90 Pro Max retains the familiar aesthetic of the Mate series. It has the central circular camera module, but the rear panel gets a layered design with different finishes across the upper and lower sections. The phone measures 8.4mm thick and weighs around 234g. It is available in Emerald Green, Rose Gold, Crystal White, and Obsidian Black color options.

For durability, the phone uses Huawei’s Kunlun Xuanwu architecture and Kunlun Glass 3. Huawei claims this improves the phone’s overall drop resistance by 50% compared with the previous-generation Mate 80 Pro Max. It also comes with IP68 and IP69 ratings for dust and water resistance.
Moving on to the display, the Huawei Mate 90 Pro Max sports a 6.9-inch dual-layer OLED display with a 2848 x 1320 pixel resolution for sharp text and images and an adaptive 1-120Hz LTPO refresh rate, allowing it to lower the refresh rate for less demanding content and increase it when smoother motion is needed.

Additionally, the screen can reach up to 12,000 nits of peak brightness, offering clear visibility even under direct sunlight. It also has an ambient-light detection system and a 1-nit ultra-low brightness mode, which should be more useful when using the phone in darker surroundings. The panel supports 1440Hz high-frequency PWM dimming and a 300Hz touch sampling rate.
Performance and Software
Under the hood, the Huawei Mate 90 Pro Max is powered by the Kirin 9050 series chipset. The 12GB RAM variant comes with the standard Kirin 9050, while the 16GB versions get the more powerful Kirin 9050 Pro. Huawei says the new chipset delivers up to a 31% improvement in overall performance compared with the previous generation. The phone comes with up to 16GB of RAM and up to 1TB of storage, giving you plenty of room for multitasking and storing large files.

The Kirin 9050 Pro also brings a new 3D LogicFolding architecture and a Maleoon GPU with hardware-level ray tracing support. This should help improve graphics in supported games, while Huawei has also added features for better frame stability during gaming. There is also a dedicated cooling system to help manage heat during demanding workloads.
On the software side, the Huawei Mate 90 Pro Max runs HarmonyOS 7 with several new AI features through the Xiaoyi assistant. These include Xiaoyi Notes, which can save and organize information such as links and to-do lists from the screen, and Xiaoyi Call Help, which can answer calls and handle certain tasks on your behalf. The assistant can also extract useful information such as addresses and links from the content displayed on your screen.

Likewise, HarmonyOS 7 also brings AI-powered features for tasks such as real-time translation, call summaries, and photo editing. These additions are integrated into the system rather than being limited to a separate AI application, giving you more ways to use the phone's AI features in everyday tasks.

Camera and Battery
For photography, the Huawei Mate 90 Pro Max brings a triple-camera setup with a 50MP main camera, 40MP ultrawide, and a 200MP periscope telephoto camera. The main sensor also uses a variable f/1.4–f/4.0 aperture, similar to what we saw in the recent iPhone 18 Pro series. And Huawei’s RYYB sensor technology, which gives the camera more flexibility depending on the lighting conditions. Meanwhile, the high-resolution periscope camera is mainly there for long-range photography, with support for up to 100x digital zoom.

Huawei has also brought its third-generation Red Maple primary color camera to the Mate 90 Pro Max, which works alongside the main camera system to improve color reproduction. On top of that, the phone uses Huawei’s XMAGE imaging system for features such as high-resolution photography and night photography. For video recording, the rear cameras support up to 4K resolution.
On the front, the phone gets a 13MP ultrawide selfie camera paired with a 3D depth-sensing camera. This setup also supports 4K video recording and helps with portrait effects and other depth-based features.

As for the battery, the Huawei Mate 90 Pro Max packs a 6,800mAh cell, which is quite large even for a flagship phone. It supports 100W wired and 50W wireless charging, so you get both a large battery and relatively fast ways to top it up. The phone also supports reverse charging, allowing it to share some of its battery with other compatible devices.
