What is VoNR?

Pre-requisites for VoNR to work
In case you didn’t know, the 5G network operates in two architectures: Standalone (SA) and Non Standalone (NSA). The former as the name implies, has a separate architecture dedicated to 5G while the latter uses an existing 4G LTE core: Evolved Packet Core (EPC) for deploying the 5G network. But bandwidth speed is much better on the SA network albeit with a lesser coverage area than NSA.
Standalone 5G architecture: To use VoNR, your device must be connected to a 5G connectivity from a Standalone Architecture (SA). That means VoNR doesn’t work on a 5G network based on a Non-Standalone Architecture.
Supported Carrier: VoNR also depends on the carrier or telecom operator. If your carrier supports VoNR, it will work on your smartphone otherwise, it won’t. Plus as aforementioned, VoNR requires SA, so if your carrier is using an NSA architecture, the voice calls will fall back to 4G, i.e, VoLTE
Supported Devices: In order to use VoNR, support on your device is also a must, as if it weren’t obvious. So, not only the 5G network support, but your smartphone should support VoNR calls. This was the same case with VoLTE, older phones despite having 4G network support, don’t boast VoLTE support.
VoNR Availability in Nepal
As everyone knows, 5G has yet to arrive in Nepal. The state-owned telco, Nepal Telecom has been internally testing it for the past two years, but, there are no certain dates for the commercial launch. On the other hand, Ncell is yet to receive a trial license from the Nepal Telecommunications Authority.
Plus, most importantly, the initial 5G network launch will likely be based on Non Standalone Architecture (NSA). So, it won’t support Voice Over New Radio. But that doesn’t put an end to the availability of VoNR in Nepal as NTC will also provide a 5G network on Standalone Architecture sometime after launching 5G on NSA.
How to activate VoLTE in Nepal?
Since VoNR is not available in Nepal, let’s take a quick recap of how to activate VoLTE in Nepal. By the way, VoLTE service is free and it doesn’t incur any extra charges for your information.
Activate VoLTE on NTC
First, dial *444# on your phone’s keypad.
Then, the USSD (Unstructured Supplementary Service Data) response will list three options.
To activate VoLTE, select the “Activate VOLTE” option by dialing 2 on your keypad.
Now, VoLTE is activated on your NTC SIM.
Also, dial *111# to claim 100 minutes free NTC to NTC voice pack valid for 28 days.
Head over to the SIM settings or Mobile network settings on your smartphone and enable 4G calling or VoLTE calling.

You can dial *17201# on your phone’s keypad.

Acer refreshed some of its TravelMate business machines a few months ago and now they are official here via Mercantile Communication. In this article, let’s take a quick peek at the available Acer TravelMate 14 (2024) models, their offerings, and price in Nepal.
Acer TravelMate Laptops Overview
Design and Display
Acer has many models under its TravelMate lineup and some of its 14” offerings are now here in Nepal. That includes the P2, P4, and P6 14 SKUs all of which ship with Miltary Grade build and a sustainability-focused approach. They are lightweight machines (<1.6 kg) with durable chassis featuring post-consumer recycled plastic. The P6 is the lightest of the bunch at just 1200 grams and this one’s more premium with an aluminum magnesium alloy.
Moving on to the display, you get either an IPS or an OLED panel with a 1200p (WUXGA) or an 1800p (WQXGA) screen. The IPS variants have up to 340 nits of brightness and cover the whole of the sRGB gamut while the OLED reaches up to 400 nits and has full DCI P3 colors.
Performance and Memory
Under the hood, the business-focused Acer TravelMate laptops ship with new Intel Core and Core Ultra processors. The TravelMate P2 14 and P4 14 have Core 5 120U, and Core 7 150U respectively while the pricier P6 14 ships with a Core Ultra 5 125H. A very important distinction is that the former two are based on an older architecture and feature Intel’s Iris Xe while the ‘Ultra’ chip is a Meteor Lake product with a well-upgraded Arc-integrated GPU among other efficiency gains.
As for the memory side of things, you are getting the standard 16/512GB configuration on most variants but there’s an extra M.2 slot on the P6 while the P2 and P4 have swappable RAM.
Battery and Extras
Although all three are 14-inch laptops, the battery sizes on the Acer TravelMate 14 (2024) can vary from 50-65Wh depending on the model. You get two Thunderbolt 4 ports, an HDMI, a Type-A, a microSD reader, and a headphone jack on the TravelMate P6 14 while the P2 and P4 bring extra Type-A and RJ45 ports.
Finally, taking a look at the additional features, we get to see stuff like a physical privacy shutter, a white backlight, and a fingerprint reader. The brand hasn’t specified the resolution for all the models, but it’d be safe to assume an FHD webcam. For wireless connections, there’s WiFi 6E and Bluetooth.

Design and Display
Not much is different in the design department. The TUF A15 is still somewhat weighty at 2.2 kg and arrives with a sturdy mecha-esque build and MIL-STD-810H rating. On the display front, you are getting a 15” IPS panel of 2.5 k resolution and a 16:9 aspect ratio. It can go up to 165Hz with a 3ms response time and covers the full sRGB gamut.
Performance
Asus didn’t initially specify the exact CPU powering the upcoming TUF A15. Instead, they said that the machine would be powered by new Ryzen 8000 series HawkPoint APU up to the Ryzen 9 8945H chip. Now, we know that the A15 can run a number of different CPU configurations but the ones that have made their way to Nepal are only the entry-level Ryzen 5 7435HS and the top-of-the-line Ryzen AI 9.
Being a gaming machine, the A15 also has a dedicated GPU from NVIDIA. There are many options for up to an RTX 4070 with 8GB of GDDR6 VRAM and 140W TGP (115W + 25 W Dynamic Boost). Right now, RTX 2050 and RTX 3050 models are available in Nepal. As for the memory, you get up to 32GB of DDR5 RAM (@5600 MHz) and up to 2TB of M.2 Gen 4 SSD.
Connectivity and Extras
Meanwhile, there’s a large 90Wh battery that provides “over 9hrs” of battery life. It also supports Type-C charging up to 100W.
In terms of connectivity, you get your typical WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.3 alongside a single USB 4 port, a USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C port, 2 type-A ports, an ethernet port, and an audio jack.
