Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6

Qualcomm is changing the way it handles its flagship Snapdragon chips. Last year, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 was the company’s main flagship, with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 arriving later as a second, slightly lower-tier premium option. This year, Qualcomm is taking that idea a step further with a multi-flagship strategy, launching two top-end platforms at the same time.

      Key Highlights

      • Both Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 platforms are built on a TSMC’s 2nm process and feature Oryon CPUs with clock speeds of up to 5GHz.
      • The Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 delivers up to 44% faster GPU performance and 35% faster NPU performance over the previous generation.
      • The Extreme model adds advanced gaming and video features, including Adreno Neural Fusion, 8K 60fps video recording, 4K 240fps slow-motion, VVC, and APV.

Meet the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6. Both are flagship-grade chips, but the Extreme model sits at the top with higher performance and additional AI, gaming, and video capabilities, while the standard Gen 6 brings many of the same flagship features to a broader range of premium phones.

And this isn't just a naming change. Both chips move to a 2nm process and bring Qualcomm’s Oryon CPU to 5GHz, alongside upgrades across AI, gaming, cameras, and connectivity.

So, what exactly separates these two new flagships, and how much of a jump are they over the previous generation? Let me break it all down in this article, including their key features, specifications, and the smartphones expected to use them.

Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Series Overview

      2nm Process and 5GHz CPU

With MediaTek and Apple already embracing 2nm chips in their latest flagship platforms, Qualcomm is now joining the 2nm race with its new Snapdragon lineup. Both Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 variants are built on TSMC’s second-generation 2nm process, marking Qualcomm’s move to a 2nm node for its flagship mobile platforms.

Both chipsets use Qualcomm’s custom Oryon CPU architecture, with two Prime cores clocked at up to 5GHz and six Performance cores reaching up to 4GHz. This makes the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 series the first smartphone platforms to reach the 5GHz CPU clock-speed mark, pushing mobile processors into a new frequency range.

Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Series 2nm Process and 5GHz Oryon CPU

Compared to the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, the standard Gen 6 delivers a 10% CPU performance improvement and up to 37% better CPU power efficiency. The Extreme version pushes CPU performance up by 13% over its predecessor.

So, while the jump in clock speed may not seem huge on paper, Qualcomm is pairing it with a more efficient 2nm process and an updated Oryon architecture to improve performance without sacrificing power efficiency.

      Gaming and GPU

Qualcomm has also reworked the Adreno GPU for this generation. The standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 offers a 35% GPU performance improvement and up to 40% better power efficiency compared to the previous generation.

The 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 takes things further with a 44% GPU performance boost. It also adds dedicated Adreno matrix cores, which handle AI-related graphics workloads instead of making the main GPU do all the work.

The Extreme model introduces Adreno Neural Fusion, combining AI-powered super-resolution, frame generation, and image reconstruction. Qualcomm says this can reduce the GPU workload and deliver up to 40% power savings in supported games.

The standard Gen 6 also brings Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Elite Gaming features, including Game Quick Touch 3.0 for reduced touch latency and up to 12GB of Adreno High Performance Memory for graphics-intensive games.

Storage is another area where the two platforms differ. The standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 supports UFS 4.1 storage, while the Extreme model steps up to the newer UFS 5.0 standard. This gives the Extreme variant a faster storage interface for quicker data transfers and potentially faster app and game loading on supported devices.

      AI and NPU

AI is another major focus of the new Snapdragon platforms, but this time the focus goes beyond the usual chatbot and summarization features.

Both chips feature a reengineered Hexagon NPU, Qualcomm’s dedicated processor for handling AI tasks directly on the device. It gets a new Element Accelerator designed to speed up demanding AI workloads, such as generative AI and other transformer-based models, while keeping the processing more power-efficient.

On the standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6, the upgraded NPU delivers a 14% performance improvement over the previous generation, while AI performance-per-watt improves by up to 20%. In simple terms, it can handle AI workloads faster while using less power to do so.

The Extreme model goes further with a 35% faster NPU and up to 33% better AI performance-per-watt. Both chipsets support LPDDR5x memory with up to 24GB of RAM, while the Extreme model also features 50% more shared memory, helping it run large Mixture of Experts models with more than 30 billion parameters.

Qualcomm is particularly pushing agentic AI, where AI can understand context, learn from user preferences, and carry out multi-step actions directly on the device rather than constantly sending everything to the cloud.

      Camera and Video

The new chips aren't just about making phones faster at opening apps. Qualcomm has also upgraded the image-processing side with its Spectra ISP, bringing several improvements to smartphone photography and video.

Both platforms feature Intelligent Pixel Control, which analyzes individual pixels in a scene to improve image quality and reduce issues such as halos and lens flare. They also get the Elite Color Engine for improved color processing and Motion Intelligence to help with stabilization.

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 supports video recording at up to 8K 30fps and 4K 120fps, giving it solid high-resolution and slow-motion capabilities. The Extreme model takes things further with support for 8K video recording at 60fps and 4K at up to 240fps, allowing for smoother high-resolution footage and more detailed slow-motion recording. It also supports the VVC (H.266) video codec, which is designed to improve video compression efficiency.

For users looking for more advanced video capabilities, the Extreme model also supports Qualcomm’s Advanced Professional Video (APV) technology, bringing a more professional video workflow directly to smartphones.

      Connectivity

For cellular connectivity, both platforms use Qualcomm’s new X105 5G Modem-RF System. It supports peak download speeds of up to 14.8Gbps, along with 5G Advanced and satellite-ready NTN connectivity.

Wireless connectivity is handled by the FastConnect 8800 system, which supports peak Wi-Fi speeds of up to 11.65Gbps. The platform supports Wi-Fi 8, Wi-Fi 7, and Wi-Fi 6, along with Bluetooth 6.0 for wireless audio and other connected devices.

For charging, both platforms support Qualcomm Quick Charge 5, enabling faster wired charging on compatible smartphones and chargers. The Extreme model also gets broader next-generation wireless support, including Ultra Wideband and Thread.
