India manages to dock satellites in space making it the 4th ever nation to do so!

Just yesterday, the ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization) posted on social media platform X announcing the successful docking of two of its satellites in space. This marks a huge milestone for the nation as it becomes the fourth ever to achieve such a feat. Let’s take a quick peek at India’s historical satellite docking in space and what it could entail for the future!

SpaDEX Mission

SpaDEX or Satellite Docking Experiment consisted of two satellites “Chaser” and “Target” launched into slightly different orbits on December 30, 2024. These satellites each weighed about 220 kilograms and were blasted off in the same rocket from Satish Dhawan Space Center in Andra Pradesh.

Yesterday, these separate entities managed to dock into one marking a ‘significant stepping stone for India’s space missions in the years to come’ according to Prime Minister Modi. The official announcement made on X talks about the docking process in short with a hearty congratulations to the team.

But it was not smooth sailing to get to this point. ISRO said that it had to postpone the docking process twice, once because of ‘requiring further validation’, and the second time because of excess drift between the Chaser and Target. Regardless, on the 16th of January, 2025, the Chaser was successfully able to connect with the Target which will now be controlled as a single entity after docking.

History in the making

Besides India, only the USA, Russia, and China have managed to pull this off till now, so it’s an achievement that propels India into the global elite. The country was able to land a satellite on the south pole of the moon for the first time ever in 2023 and there are even plans for an Indian Space Station by 2035. Safe to say, Modi was serious when he said that they would send an Indian astronaut to the moon by 2040.

The rumor mill is churning with very exciting news about the potential comeback of an old industry leader in the smartphone space, and we can’t wait to see it all come true!

Huawei and the World

The BAN

Huawei, the brand that was often associated with innovation and ingenuity in the smartphone space just a couple of years ago, was nearly brought to ruin after facing a ruthless ban from the USA. This ban prevented Huawei from partnering with US-based companies or any company using US technology, especially in the semiconductor space.

It meant that the Chinese company couldn’t source chips for its smartphones and gadgets from industry leaders like Qualcomm and TSMC. Although the latter isn’t based in the US, almost all chip manufacturers use US-originated technology which Huawei can’t access. This finishing move was meant to cripple Huawei but astoundingly the brand seems to be standing on its feet slowly but steadily.

Komeback with Kirin

Rumors have it that Huawei is planning a global comeback with a potential launch of its products in 60 different countries soon. After the ban, Huawei started manufacturing its own processors in partnership with SMIC, China’s leading chipmaker. Although previous attempts were largely unimpressive, the Kirin 9020 powering its current Mate 70 flagship seems to be good enough to provide a fluid user experience.

Rumored to be fabbed under a much older 7nm process, it lags very much behind the competition in terms of performance and efficiency but it could serve as a turning point for Huawei, one capable of launching the brand back into global stardom. But wait, there’s still a missing part of the puzzle…software.

Harmony is the key

The aforementioned ban also barred Huawei from Google services like Gmail, Maps, and YouTube which meant that anyone outside China would find it pretty hard to daily drive a Huawei. But the company has been working on its own Operating System for a while called ‘HarmonyOS’. Although HarmonyOS started out using code from the Android Open Source Project (and could sideload Android apps), HarmonyOS NEXT is built from the ground up to run on all Huawei devices: smartphones, tablets, TVs, and other smart devices.

This allows for in-house optimization to make the most of system resources. On top of that, rumors say that Huawei has its own set of apps as alternatives to their Android counterparts along with an app store.

Huawei Global Comeback in 2026?

If all the pieces fall into their right slots, we could see Huawei phones in the hands of consumers around the world very soon but there are still many kinks to work out like sub-par performance and compatibility. That being said, we are hopeful that Huawei can overcome these obstacles and ignite a spark of innovation in what is generally considered a ‘matured’ and honestly stifled landscape of smartphones.
