Vivo Y19s review: Is it a worthy offering under 20K?

0

Vivo Nepal is on the spree of doing back-to-back launches. And we have a new budget midrange phone from Vivo popping up in the sub-20K segment. It features a Unisoc T612 SoC, a hole-punch cutout screen, and a good-looking design. I have been using this phone for a week already, and I’ll be sharing everything I have witnessed and found about it in my Vivo Y19s review. But before heading to the review, let’s take a look at the specifications of the Vivo Y19s, shall we?

Vivo Y19s Review

Beautiful Design with a Durable Punch

I think I don’t really need to speak about the design of a Vivo phone. It has always been quite an emphasized part when it comes to a smartphone from Vivo. And the Vivo Y19s stands as no exception and continues providing a good-looking design for the price. I have this Diamond Black shade but I bet, the Pearl Silver option would look even more beautiful. Anyways, what’s even better is the MIL-810H standard and SGS 5-Star Drop resistance. which takes care of the durability aspect. Plus, the four corners of the phones are said to be shock-absorbing.

So, despite boasting an all-plastic build, the Y19s should be able to take some drops from a minor height, without any sort of damage. I haven’t tried dropping this guy tho’ but as per the claims, it should be strong enough! On top of that the IP64 rating is there for worry-free dust and water resistance. Durability and Design-wise, this guy deserves a solid 4.8/5 rating.

Display

Getting to the display side, the Vivo Y19s features a 6.68-inch IPS LCD panel with an HD+ resolution and a 90Hz refresh rate. I can’t really expect an AMOLED display in this price range. For your information, the Vivo Y28 which starts at NPR 23,999 (8/128GB) even ships with the same 90Hz HD+ 6.68-inch IPS LCD panel. So, it is not the norm with Vivo phones, I guess. But, Vivo deserves some praise for bringing a modern hole-punch panel for a sub 20K phone.

Vivo Y19s Multimedia Usage

Anyways, the display works well for the price, I won’t lie. The visuals are decent enough for your reels and Tiktok scrolling needs. You just need to select the 90Hz-only option and voila! you get a 90Hz refresh rate experience across the system and social media apps. Otherwise, the default option will set it back and forth between 60 and 90Hz, which is good for saving some battery juice. So, the choice is all yours!

Unisoc T612 SoC

Running the things from the core is a 12nm Unisoc T612 processor with two Cortex-A75 cores at 1.8GHz and six Cortex-A55 cores at 1.8GHz. Well, I had some mixed feelings seeing, a Unisoc chip at NPR 18,499. Vivo could have gone for a MediaTek Helio G91 SoC instead, like what Redmi 13 did. But once again, the aforementioned Vivo Y28 boasts a Helio G85 SoC, and again, I have to accept this norm!

Talking of the day to day usage, the Unisoc T612 caters decently to those moderate users, who don’t need fast performance. With 6 gigs of RAM on board, multitasking is fine but, you’ll notice slight lags here and there while switching apps. After all, the sub-20K segment obviously suits a basic user, without a doubt. Funtouch OS 14 is what you get over here, and it works fine with some customization options. Thankfully, there are no ads here but a few uninstallable bloatware is present though! Talking of some gaming, you can do some casual PUBG gaming at up to 40fps. But do not expect smooth gameplay as the chip is not that powerful.

Vivo Y19s PUBG Gameplay

And this phone has one peculiar feature which is rare for a budget midrange phone. On the rear side, you get an Aura light-like thing that doesn’t work for cameras but lights up for notifications and phone calls. And it does look cool, Not Gonna Lie!

Vivo Y19s Aura Light Notifications

Camera

Now, let’s talk about the optics. You get a dual camera setup here with a 50MP primary sensor and a useless 0.08MP depth sensor. In contrast, the selfie camera is a 5MP unit. And here’s what I have found.

Daylight

The main camera can click decent-looking images when the sun is up. Although, I really wish the outputs were a bit more punchier for my liking.

Portraits

The portrait samples are good-looking while the edge detection and dynamic range are a bit on the wee side. But it’s understandable for a phone of this caliber.

Selfie

The 5MP selfie camera is what you get here. If you happen to take a snap and take a look at the phone’s screen, the selfies might look a bit underwhelming. While it looks fine on a laptop screen. Either way, the 5MP resolution doesn’t retain many details.

Lowlight

When the sun goes down, the Y19s takes below-average photos via the normal mode. Thankfully, there is a dedicated night mode that controls overall exposure and provides you with usable samples.

Videos

And as with every other budget midrange phone, you have to settle with 1080p 30fps resolution on both front and back cameras with no EIS.  I’d say, it goes just fine for casual usage.

Battery and Charging

Moving on, the Vivo Y19s gets its fuel from a 5150mAh battery. But for some reason, the global version packs a bigger 5500mAh cell. Anyways, the Y19s can last you for a day easily on moderate usage. To top it up, you get a 15W charger in the box that takes around 2 hours and 10 minutes. Here, I wish the charging speed was quicker.

Vivo Y19s Battery and Charging

Vivo Y19s Review: Conclusion

Okay so, coming to the conclusion, the Vivo Y19s stands as a decent choice for the sub 20K segment, if not the best! The design and build deserve praise with a solid MIL-STD-810H standard and SGS 5-Star Drop resistance. Likewise, the display is also on the decent side with a 90Hz refresh rate while the 50MP main camera is also fine for the price! But I really wished for a higher-resolution front camera and a bit more powerful chip like Helio G91 Ultra!

Amazon launches Haul with all products under USD 20!

0

Well, well, in the Western world, the likes of Temu and Shein have been wreaking havoc in the e-commerce landscape. They offer trendy products at an affordable price tag. This was hurting the market dominance of Amazon and now the multi-trillion dollar company is finally clapping back. Enter — Amazon Haul!

Amazon Haul Overview

Low prices

The main point of Haul is to maintain Amazon’s dominance in the e-commerce platform. It tried to fight back by offering more discounts, improving delivery speeds, and even putting up something like Amazon Prime Wardrobe and Amazon Fashion to keep up with the fashion trends. However, it did not reap the benefits as intended.

Amazon Haul App

And in a classic “If you can’t beat them, join them” move, Amazon unveiled Haul, which will offer the same thing as the likes of Temu and Shein. All the items here are under the USD 20 mark — most of which are USD 10 or even lower.

Shipping and Safety

Meanwhile, the shipping of Amazon Haul products takes a week or two and is free for orders totalling over USD 25. If you do not hit that mark, it will cost you USD 3.99 to get your stuff delivered. Likewise, there are discounts too — 5% off on purchases over USD 50, and 10% off on orders over USD 75. Lastly, the returning items over USD 3 in value are absolutely free within 15 days.

The e-commerce giant has not forgotten to ensure cheap products adhere to applicable regulations. Amazon says it screens all the products Haul sellers are offering and they are safe and authentic. Additionally, the company promises to innovate further to improve the shopping experience.

Amazon Haul Launch and Availability

This affordable branch of the company was announced on 13 November 2024 and is already live. However, it is only accessible to US-based users. Furthermore, it is only accessible via a smartphone — either through the app or by visiting the Haul website on the mobile browser.

Baidu looks to challenge Ray-Ban Meta with Chinese-understanding Xiaodu AI Glasses

Baidu is China’s dominant search engine, which has branched out to various fields such as autonomous driving, ride-sharing, AI, and so on. Xiaodu Technology is the company’s hardware division and they have just launched a new AI smartglasses. Let’s take a look at Baidu’s Xiaodu AI Glasses in further detail and what its price in Nepal might be.

Baidu Xiaodu AI Glasses Overview

Design

Design-wise, the new AI Glasses from Baidu look like any regular sunglasses. The only things that particularly stand out are its thicker handles and cameras on the front. It weighs just 45 grams, which is edging towards the heavier end for sunglasses. This is because of all the hardware it has to fit inside.

Baidu Xiaodu AI Glasses Design

The information available about these glasses is rather limited, hence we cannot tell if it is available in other shades than black. We will also have to wait and see how it fares against the plethora of options and customisation Ray-Ban Meta offers its users.

Hardware

The Xiaodu AI Glasses from Baidu are equipped with two 16MP ultrawide cameras, which are higher in resolution than the 12MP Meta packs its glasses with. These glasses use these cameras to snap POV images and videos which are stabilised by AI for better results. The lenses also help the glasses recognise whatever it is pointing towards. Additionally, there are four microphones and open-ear anti-leakage speakers handling the audio.

Baidu Xiaodu AI Glasses Hardware

Talking of the battery, Baidu does not exactly mention the cell capacity on the Xiaodu AI Glasses. However, they can apparently last up to 56 hours on standby and over five hours when playing music. Meanwhile, the charging on these glasses is rapid — capable of filling up in just 30 minutes. The brand has not revealed the silicon powering these glasses either.

Software and AI

On the software front, the Xiaodu AI Glasses boot on the DuerOS AI and will likely be integrated with popular Baidu apps like Maps and Baike. These glasses perform six chief functions: real-time Q&A through walk-and-ask queries, calorie recognition, object identification through an encyclopedia feature, audio-visual translation, and intelligent reminders.

What stands out the most about the Xiaodu AI Glasses is that they come with Baidu’s advanced Ernie language model. As a result, these glasses understand and can converse in Chinese, making them more attractive than Ray-Ban Meta in the second most populous country in the world. The latter only supports English, Spanish, French, and Italian as of now.

Baidu Xiaodu AI Glasses Specifications

  • Design: Sunglasses-like
  • Camera: Dual 16MP Ultrawide
  • Speaker: Open-ear anti-leakage
  • Microphone: Quad-mic array
  • OS: DuerOS AI
  • Battery Life: Over 5 hours (Music playback), Up to 56 hours (Standby)
  • Charging: 30 minutes
  • Functions: POV photos and videos with AI stabilisation, Real-time Q&A through walk-and-ask queries, Calorie recognition, Object identification through an encyclopedia feature, Audio-visual translation, Intelligent reminders
  • Supported Languages: Chinese

Baidu Xiaodu AI Glasses Price in Nepal and Availability

These glasses were revealed at the 2024 Baidu World Conference as the “World’s first AI glasses equipped with a native Chinese language model”. However, they have not made it to the market just yet. As per the company, they will be available in the first half of 2025 with a price tag of under CNY 2,100.

These glasses will likely not leave their home country as Xiaodu created them specifically with the Chinese audience in mind. It doesn’t make much sense either since they have really limited functionalities with English. This is why they won’t be available in Nepal either, but if they did, the price for the Xiaodu AI Glasses from Baidu will likely land around NPR 50,000.

InDrive introduces a new “Comfort” feature for more comfortable taxi rides

0

InDrive is one of the largest and most popular ride-sharing apps in Nepal. The brand has just launched a new vertical, offering a more comfortable travel experience. Let’s take a look at what the new InDrive Comfort feature is all about in this article.

InDrive Comfort Overview

Premium Rides

If you have taken an InDrive ride before, you may have known that — the kind of car you will be getting is anyone’s guess. It could be new, it could be old, who knows? But with the InDrive Comfort feature, you get a curated selection of sedan-class cars.

InDrive Comfort Class Taxi

In the context of Nepal, that would mean the Tata XPRES-T EV since it is the only sedan-class vehicle used as a taxi here. The only other such vehicle I have seen running as a cab in the Kathmandu valley was a Neta V50 — that too once.

All in all, with InDrive Comfort users get high-standard cabs with clean and spacious interiors, air conditioning, and an overall luxurious ride experience.

Also… Premium Price

With the great standard — of course — comes great prices. (That’s some Uncle Ben stuff right there). However, the spike isn’t as great as you would expect. In my brief time of comparing the prices, the InDrive Comfort rides were about 6% higher than the regular option. Sounds about right.

The company says the pricing is fair, transparent, and without surges running in the background. The bargaining feature is still there. That being said, the riders rarely accept the minimum fare you offer anyway. So, the pricing might not go how you exactly want it to. Meanwhile, the company personnel did hint that the waiting time could be a little longer in exchange for the premium features you will be getting.

InDrive Comfort: Conclusion

The introduction of InDrive Comfort brings more premium service in exchange for a slight price hike — sure. But this also marks the shift of the top two ride-sharing platforms in our country towards a tiering modality. Yes, Pathao also has a similar service called “Car Plus”.

As such, both InDrive and Pathao are following in the footsteps of Uber, which has over 10 tiers of ride-sharing ranging from Uber Pool to Uber Lux. This isn’t bad or anything, but it does have a potential dark side, which Mrwhosetheboss explains in detail in his video. Hopefully, we are not heading in a similar direction.

Anyhoo, congratulations to InDrive for introducing the Comfort feature in their platform and providing users with wider ride options.

This is what Samsung’s tri-fold could look like

Huawei recently launched the Mate XT, which made waves worldwide — and rightfully so! It was the first-ever dual-folding phone, or as it is popularly known a “tri-fold”. All the buzz Huawei created seems to have influenced Samsung to try and take a spin at a tri-fold phone too. Let’s discuss.

Samsung Tri-fold Rumour Round-up

The sales are low

Samsung’s most recent take on foldable phones has not met with good response per se. When you look at the Chinese competitors, it seems a bit too apparent that Samsung is not trying as hard as it should. The foldable phones from Chinese companies such as Xiaomi, Honor, and OnePlus are thinner, have very little screen crease, cram large battery capacities, and so on.

Galaxy Z Fold 6 and OnePlus Open design
Galaxy Fold6 and OnePlus Open

Given that, Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 and Flip6 sales have been rather sluggish. Numbers say that Samsung only pumped 8 million units of these phones, which is 20% less than the initially anticipated 10 million. Furthermore, the orders for the company’s foldable OLED panel have taken a hit as well. This year, the display’s shipments have been slashed by a whopping 40% from 20 million previously.

Enter Tri-fold

The consumer’s interest in the foldable market is dwindling, and the Huawei Mate XT was immensely popular. Considering this, Samsung is apparently ready to try its hands out on a tri-fold phone too.

Samsung Flex S Display

The South Korean smartphone manufacturer already has the parts ready to put together such a phone. Samsung already has the “Flex S” display which folds once on the inside and once on the outside. As per sources, the development of other parts required for making Samsung tri-fold commercially available has been completed too.

Patent approved!

Recent leaks indicate that the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has approved Samsung’s patent application for a tri-foldable device, which was filed three years ago. The patent images provide detailed insights into the concept and its potential functionality. And, it seems that Samsung has not just been influenced by Huawei Mate XT’s idea of tri-fold but also the form factor.

While this approval increases the likelihood of Samsung developing a tri-fold phone, we can’t still guarantee the existence of a retail model based on that. Moreover, sources say rather than rushing into production, this time Samsung is focused on creating the “best” three-fold smartphone. So, we can expect the tri-fold (when—or if—they) to hit the market a bit late.

Samsung Tri-fold Launch and Availability

All in all, Samsung is ready to put out a tri-fold smartphone and could potentially do so in the year 2025. However, the final decision lies in the hands of its MX (Mobile eXperience) division which oversees everything related to foldable phones. Additionally, the launching of a cheaper flip phone — a Fan Edition perhaps, is also in talks.
