Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 launched as a lighter, wider book-style foldable

Samsung has officially unveiled the Galaxy Z Fold8 as the latest addition to its foldable lineup, alongside the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra. This year’s upgrade focuses on refining the experience with a lighter 201g body and wider cover display—two changes Fold fans have been asking for. Besides that, it also packs the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset, dual 50MP rear cameras, a 4,800mAh battery, and Samsung's latest Galaxy AI features. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 Overview

Design and Display

Starting with the design, as mentioned above, Samsung has finally given the Fold series a much-needed makeover with the Galaxy Z Fold8. It is noticeably lighter than its predecessor, the Fold 7, weighing just 201g, while also featuring a wider cover display with a 10:16 aspect ratio that makes it feel much more like a regular smartphone when folded.

The phone measures 9.7mm when folded and 4.5mm when unfolded. Despite the slimmer profile, it retains an IP48 rating for dust and water resistance. Samsung has also introduced a new Flex Titanium display structure, while the cover display gets an anti-reflective coating to improve outdoor visibility. 

The frame is built using Advanced Armor Aluminum, whereas the rear panel is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2. The Galaxy Z Fold8 is available in Graphite, Cream, Lavender, and Pistachio color options.

Moving on to the display, the Galaxy Z Fold8 features a 7.6-inch Dynamic LTPO AMOLED 2X inner folding screen and a 5.5-inch Dynamic LTPO AMOLED 2X cover display. The inner panel has a resolution of 1828 x 2448 pixels, while the cover screen comes in at 1248 x 1972 pixels, ensuring crisp visuals and sharp text across both displays.

Additionally, both panels support an adaptive 120Hz refresh rate for smoother scrolling and animations. They also come with Vision Booster and can reach up to 3,000 nits of peak brightness, ensuring good visibility even under harsh sunlight. 

Performance and Software

As mentioned earlier, the Galaxy Z Fold8 is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy, Samsung’s custom-tuned version of the flagship chipset. It is designed to handle demanding tasks like heavy multitasking, gaming, and advanced on-device AI features with ease. The phone is configured with 12GB of RAM on the 256GB and 512GB storage variants, while the top-end 1TB model gets 16GB of RAM.

On the software side, the Galaxy Z Fold8 runs on One UI 9 based on Android 17 out of the box. Here you get seven years of major upgrades alongside seven years of security patches, making it ideal for long use. Samsung continues to focus heavily on AI and productivity with deeper Galaxy AI integration and improved tools for everyday tasks.

Camera and Battery

For optics, the Galaxy Z Fold8 comes with a dual-camera setup at the rear, featuring a 50MP primary camera and a 50MP ultrawide camera. The main sensor supports optical image stabilization (OIS) for steadier photos and videos, with support for 8K video recording at 30fps. Instead of focusing on adding more camera hardware, Samsung continues to rely on software processing and Galaxy AI features to improve the overall photography experience.

For selfies and video calls, the Galaxy Z Fold8 comes with two 10MP front-facing cameras, one placed on the cover display and another on the inner folding display. This marks a shift away from the previous under-display camera approach, giving users a more consistent selfie experience across both screens.

In terms of battery, the Galaxy Z Fold8 packs a 4,800mAh battery, which is a notable upgrade over the 4,400mAh cell found on the Fold 7.
