Sony FX5 launched with 5K Open Gate recording and internal X-OCN RAW

Sony has expanded its Cinema Line portfolio with the launch of the new Sony FX5—a compact full-frame cinema camera aimed at professional filmmakers and content creators. Sitting between the FX3 and higher-end Cinema Line models, the FX5 introduces several features that have long been on filmmakers' wishlists, including 5K Open Gate recording, internal X-OCN RAW recording, and a new fully stacked image sensor. In this article, I will discuss this professional shooting camera in detail, including the expected Sony FX5 price in Nepal, specifications, and availability. 

Sony FX5 Overview

Compact cinema body with improved workflow

Starting off, the Sony FX5 retains the familiar compact Cinema Line design, making it suitable for handheld shooting, gimbals, drones, and tight production setups. Additionally, the magnesium alloy body features multiple mounting points, an active cooling fan for extended recording sessions, and dual CFexpress Type A/SD card slots. 

Here, Sony is also introducing two optional accessories alongside the camera. You could also find a detachable OLED electronic viewfinder for filmmakers who prefer eye-level shooting, while the redesigned XLR handle supports up to 96kHz 32-bit float in-camera audio recording for greater flexibility during productions.

New stacked sensor brings Open Gate recording

Under the hood, Sony FX5 uses the new full-frame, fully stacked Exmor RS CMOS sensor paired with Sony's latest BIONZ XR2 processor, which is quite a bump from what you saw on its predecessor—the older Sony FX3. According to Sony, the camera offers more than 15 stops of dynamic range so that the highlights and shadow details are preserved to give better output. 

In addition to that, Sony is bringing the 5K Open Gate recording support to Sony's FX Cinema Line for the first time, which is available internally when shooting in 16-bit X-OCN RAW format. This means, if you are a filmmaker, then it will give you more flexibility to crop videos for different platforms, whether it's widescreen YouTube videos or vertical content for social media. 

In terms of frame rates, the FX5 records 5K at up to 60fps, 4K at up to 120fps out of the box, and FHD at up to 240fps for slow-motion footage. Crucially, Sony has also brought internal X-OCN RAW recording support to this camera lineup for the first time, reducing the need for external recorders on professional shoots.

Triple Base ISO, AI autofocus and Venice-inspired tools

On top of that, Sony has equipped the FX5 with Triple Base ISO levels of 800, 4000, and 12800. Along with that, it also supports the dual Gain Shooting mode, which will allow you to shoot across a wider range of lighting conditions—including from bright outdoor scenes to dim indoor sets without introducing excessive noise or sacrificing image quality. 

As for autofocus, the FX5 uses Sony's latest AI processing unit for smarter subject recognition and tracking. Here, it can identify people, animals, birds, vehicles, and more, keeping them in focus even when they're moving around the frame. If you are a solo creators and documentary filmmakers who often have to rely on continuous autofocus instead of manual focusing, then this could be the upgrade that you might consider. 

Apart from this, Sony has also brought over several monitoring tools from its higher-end cinema cameras. These include False Color, anamorphic support, focus assist, and Active Mode image stabilization,  making it easier to check exposure accurately, capture steadier handheld footage, and speed up the overall shooting workflow on set.

Modernized Display, Battery, and Connectivity

Besides the imaging upgrades, Sony has also improved the overall shooting experience. The FX5 features a 3.5-inch fully articulating touchscreen with a 2.76-million-dot resolution, making it easier to monitor shots from different angles. It also gets an updated CineAlta-inspired touch menu, which should make navigating settings quicker and more intuitive on set. 

To keep up with longer shooting sessions, the camera uses a larger NP-SA100 battery for improved endurance. Meanwhile, connectivity has also been upgraded with dual USB-C ports, allowing users to charge the camera while transferring data at the same time. There's also a dedicated Ethernet (LAN) port, which comes in handy for tethered shooting, remote camera control, and studio workflows.
