Big day for the camera world. Nikon just announced the ZR (which we have already discussed elsewhere), and now Canon has unveiled the EOS C50. Both are compact, full-frame cinema cameras for indie filmmakers and also for people who are generally interested in content creation. Canon EOS C50 Overview
Design and Build
The C50 is Canon’s smallest and lightest cinema camera yet, weighing just 670g. It has really nice compact form factor that could be best usable for filmmakers who work in tight spaces, or indie filmmakers who rely on handheld shots. The body includes a detachable top handle with XLR inputs, a zoom rocker, and control dials as well.
Sensor and Image Quality
Inside, the C50 packs a 32MP full-frame CMOS sensor capable of 7K internal RAW recording at up to 60fps. It also supports 4K up to 120fps and 2K up to 180fps. Whereas, the camera features Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF II, which covers basically all of the entire sensor and also offers autofocus performance.
Recording Formats and Dynamic Range
The C50 supports 12-bit Cinema RAW Light and XF-AVC S 10-bit 4:2:2 recording formats. With a claimed dynamic range of over 15 stops, it should technically deliver good image quality.
Connectivity and Workflow
The camera includes a CFexpress Type B card slot and an SD card slot, which in simple language, is for simultaneous recording and backup. It also features a 3-inch LCD display, full-size HDMI, USB-C, timecode terminal, and 3.5mm mic and headphone inputs. For wireless control, the C50 supports Canon’s XC protocol over Wi-Fi or a USB-C Ethernet adapter.
Audio and Accessories
The included top handle adds two XLR audio inputs, a start-stop button, a zoom rocker, and finally control dials.
