Loyal’s groundbreaking drug aims to extend lifespan for large dogs

    0

In a bid to bridge the gap in life expectancy between large and small dog breeds, San Francisco-based biotech company Loyal is making significant strides with its experimental drug, LOY-001. The Lifespan-Extending Drug for Dogs is designed to extend the lifespan and enhance the quality of life for larger canine companions, a breakthrough that could revolutionize the way we care for our four-legged friend.

Lifespan-Extending Drug for Dogs: An Overview

     The Lifespan Disparity

    Bernese Mountain Dog

The well-established inverse relationship between a dog’s size and its expected lifespan has long been a concern for pet owners. Large breeds like Bernese mountain dogs and Great Danes typically live only six to eight years, while smaller breeds such as corgis and Chihuahuas can enjoy up to 15 and 20 years, respectively. Loyal’s mission is to address this disparity and give owners of larger dogs more time with their beloved pets. Loyal believes this lifespan-extending drug for dogs will help dogs live a more fulfilling life with their owners.

    FDA Confidence and Drug Mechanism

A recent announcement by Loyal revealed that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has acknowledged the potential of LOY-001, stating a “reasonable expectation of effectiveness.” Although the “lifespan-extending drug for dogs” direct impact on extending lifespan is yet to be proven, the FDA’s vote of confidence is a significant step forward.

The life-extending drug for dogs functions by lowering levels of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), a hormone associated with growth and metabolism. Studies have shown that inhibiting IGF-1 can increase lifespan in various species, and Loyal’s early data indicates a reduction in IGF-1 levels in large dogs, bringing them in line with medium-sized counterparts.

    Early Studies and Future Plans

Loyal’s dedication to advancing canine health is evident in its early studies involving 130 research dogs. The company successfully demonstrated the drug’s ability to reduce IGF-1 levels in large dogs without major side effects, signaling a promising safety profile.

Looking ahead, Loyal plans a more extensive study commencing in 2024 or 2025, enrolling around 1,000 large and giant breed companion dogs aged at least 7 years. testing the efficacy of Loyal’s Lifespan-Extending Drug for Dogs with half of the participants receiving the experimental drug and the other half a placebo,

    Timeline and Ethical Considerations

As Loyal spearheads the development of LOY-001, an innovative drug aimed at extending the lifespan of large and giant dog breeds, the ethical considerations surrounding this groundbreaking research take precedence. In an industry scrutinized for its treatment of animals during testing, Loyal stands as a beacon of responsible and compassionate research.

    Testing Phase Ethics:

The pharmaceutical and research sector has often faced ethical scrutiny for the treatment of animals during experiments, a concern highlighted by incidents such as those involving Neuralink’s experiments with monkeys. Loyal distinguishes itself by adhering to stringent ethical guidelines during its testing phases, ensuring the welfare of the animals involved.

    Loyal’s Ethical Stance

Loyal takes pride in prioritizing animal welfare throughout its studies. With a forthcoming trial set to enroll 1,000 large and giant breed companion dogs aged at least 7 years, the company maintains an unwavering commitment to the highest standards of care and humane treatment.

    Balancing Desires and Well-being

    Lifespan-extedning drug for dogs

As pet owners express the desire for their dogs to live longer, Loyal confronts the ethical challenge of harmonizing these desires with the well-being of the animals. CEO Celine Halioua emphasizes caution, clarifying that the goal is not to create immortal dogs but to slow the rate of aging, promoting longer periods of healthy life for pets.

    Genetic Factors and Responsibility

Veterinary geneticist Danika Bannasch contributes valuable insights, acknowledging that while IGF-1 plays a role in dog size and lifespan, other genetic factors, including the recently identified ERBB4 gene, may also be influential. The responsibility to address genetic issues stemming from centuries of selective breeding is at the forefront of Loyal’s initiative, potentially marking a pivotal moment in mitigating these longstanding concerns.

    Caution in Optimism

Despite an optimistic outlook, Loyal exercises caution in its approach. The company’s emphasis on responsible innovation is epitomized by CEO Celine Halioua’s statement. The timeline for bringing the drug to market is set for 2026, contingent on FDA approval.

    Lifespan-extending drug for dogs: Conclusion

In conclusion, Loyal’s groundbreaking efforts to develop a drug that addresses the size-related disparities in canine lifespans hold promise for dog owners seeking extended quality time with their larger companions. As the company progresses through further studies and regulatory processes, the potential impact on the broader understanding of aging and genetics in both animals and humans looms large.

Huawei MatePad Pro 11 2024 goes official with Kirin 9000s and two-way satellite connectivity

    1

The MatePad Pro Series is the flagship tablet offering from Huawei. After skipping the 2023 iteration, the Chinese tech giant has finally unveiled the MatePad Pro 11 2024 version. This tablet arrives with a new Kirin 9000s chipset, an 11-inch OLED panel, and a dual camera setup. Without further ado, we’ll dive into the specs, features, and expected price of the Huawei MatePad Pro 11 2024 in Nepal in this article.

Huawei MatePad Pro 11 2024 Overview:

    Kirin 9000S

Powering the things from the core is the Kirin 9000S chipset. This in-house silicon from Huawei boats a 1+3+4 architecture with the prime core running at 2.49GHz, three performance cores at 2.15GHz, and four efficiency cores clocking at 1.53GHz. To compare, the Kirin 9000S is only as powerful as the three-year old, Snapdragon 865 chipset as per a recent Geekbench listing.

In terms of memory and storage, the MatePad Pro 11 (2024) comes in two options: 12/256GB and 12/512GB. Booting the slate is Harmony OS 4 with seamless integration on other Huawei devices running the same software.

    Design and Display

Speaking of the design, the new MatePad Pro 11 (2024) inherits a similar design language as its 2022 iteration. You get a sturdy aluminum chassis with a slim profile of 5.9mm thickness. For the audio, this tab boasts a six-speaker setup for a rich multimedia experience.

As for the display, you’re greeted with an 11-inch OLED panel with a 2560 x 1600 pixels resolution and 120Hz refresh rate. This 16:10 aspect ratio screen bears a hole punch cutout for a selfie camera and 600 nits of peak brightness. Talking of the accessories compatibility, it supports Huawei M-pencil (3rd generation) and Hauwei Spilt Smart Magnetic keyboard with 1.5mm key travel and 15mm keycaps.

    Camera

Getting to the optics, there is a dual camera setup comprising a 13MP main camera and an 8mP ultrawide unit. For attending meetings and taking video calls, you get a 16MP front camera.

    Battery, and Connectivity, and Others

Fueling the tablet is an 8,300mAh battery with 66W fast-wired charging support. Connectivity options here include WiFi 5, Bluetooth 5.2, GPS, and a USB-C port. The headlining feature here is two-way Beidou satellite connectivity. Although there is no cellular connectivity, thanks to the HarmonyOS ecosystem, the tab can automatically connect to a Huawei phone’s network.

ASUS Zenbook 15 OLED (2023) Overview

    Design and Display

The Zenbook lineup from Asus is the perfect blend between compact lightweight form factor and reliability. And the new Zenbook 15 OLED (2023) is no exception. At just 14.9mm thick and weighing a mere 1.4 kg, it is designed for those on the move. Zenbook 15 comes with a plasma and a ceramic lid which looks quite unique. However, it misses out on the taller 16:10 aspect ratio, instead leaning for 16:9.  The 120Hz refresh rate panel comes with an impressive 0.2 response time. It covers 100% of the DCI-P3 color gamut and can hit 600 nits of peak HDR brightness. The panel is also Display HDR True Black 600 certified on top of being PANTONE validated.

    Performance

Under the hood, the Zenbook 15 2023 features Zen 3-based 7000 series AMD processors. You can configure it with either the Ryzen 5 7535U or the Ryzen 7 7735U CPU. Right now, the latter made it to Nepal with 8 Cores, 16 Threads, and base/ boost clock speeds of 2.7 GHz and 4.75 GHz respectively. The integrated Radeon graphics handles the GPU workload.

Complementing the CPU, you get 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM alongside a TerraByte of Gen 4 SSD.

Tecno Camon 20 review: Tecno’s on the right path!

The sub-25K segment in the Nepalese market is dominated by brands like Redmi, Realme, and Samsung. Today, I’m picking one device from a lesser-known brand – the Tecno Camon 20 which costs NPR 22,990 for the sole 8/256GB trim. Wait, please don’t go “meh” yet. This guy packs some impressive specs for its price like an AMOLED screen, an in-display fingerprint scanner, a dual stereo speaker setup, and a capable camera! So, does this make it a reliable option to get for that price? Let’s find that out in our Tecno Camon 20 review.

Before moving further, let’s have a look at the specifications.

    Tecno Camon 20 Specifications:

    • Body: 162.71 x 75.89 x 7.82mm, 185 gm, IP53
    • Display: 6.67-inch FHD+ AMOLED, 60Hz refresh rate
    • Resolution: 1080×2400 pixels, 20:9 ration, 395 ppi
    • Chipset: MediaTek Helio G85 (12nm Mobile Platform)
    • GPU: Mali-G52 MC2
    • Memory: 8GB RAM, 256GB storage
    • Software & UI: Android 13 based HiOS 13
    • Rear Camera: Triple setup with Ring Flash
      • 64MP f/1.7 primary
      • 2MP f/2.4 depth
      • QVGA
    • Front Camera: 32MP f/2.5, dual LED flash

    Tecno Camon 20 Review:

    I loved the design

Starting with the design, the back of the Camon 20 features a geometrical pattern with a leather texture, which Tecno calls the Lychee pattern. This Serenity Blue color option that I have, feels surprisingly premium. The phone feels nice with its flat frames and the narrow side bezels contribute to its aesthetics. Well if you really need a glass back, worry not! Tecno also ships the Camon 20 in Predawn Black and Glacier Glow shades with glass backs.

    Not a regular AMOLED panel

    • 6.67” AMOLED Panel, FHD+ (2400 x 1080)
    • 60Hz Refresh Rate, 100% DCI-P3 color gamut, 1920Hz PWM Dimming, TUV Rheinland Certification

Talking about the display, you are greeted with a 6.67-inch AMOLED panel with Full HD+ resolution. Despite being a midrange phone, the screen here boasts 1920Hz PWM Dimming and TUV Rheinland certification, reducing eye strain, and providing a harmful blue light filter. Which makes it arguably the best AMOLED panel in this sub-25K segment.

    Tecno Camon 20 Media Playback

Speaking of the quality itself, I found the display to be on the punchy side with rich contrast. Day-by-day usage – whether it’s watching content or using social media, you are sorted with its super decent quality. However, the 60Hz refresh rate is quite a downside, considering similarly priced phones like the Redmi Note 12 4G offer a smoother 120Hz refresh rate. Other than that, the in-display fingerprint scanner is here, which is quite rare in this segment. And it works as well as it should!

Moving on to the audio, the dual speakers of the Camon 20 provide a decent experience. While it’s not exceptionally crisp, having two speakers enhances bass and audio separation for better multimedia consumption. And other brands have already stopped providing dual stereo speakers for quite a while, in this segment. So, yay, Tecno gets one more point from here!

Is the Helio G85 fair enough?

    • CPU & GPU: Octa-core Mediatek Helio G85 (12nm) + Mali-G52 MC2
    • Memory and Storage: 8GB LPDDR4x + 256GB
    • OS & UI: Android 13 with HiOS 13 on top

In terms of performance, the phone is equipped with the Mediatek Helio G85 chip, which is an average processor for its price. Thanks to the 8GB RAM, day-to-day usage is decent for apps like Facebook, Messenger, YouTube, and WhatsApp. However, I would not suggest it for intensive gaming, for BR games like PUBG and Call of Duty. However, if you’re a casual gamer, it’s good to go.

    Tecno Camon 20 Gaming

Regarding the user interface, the phone runs on Android 13-based HiOS 13, which is simple and customizable. But the catch is, it comes with some bloatware and apps recommendations. The overall UI experience is not as refined as what Samsung and OnePlus offer.

    A capable camera…

    • Rear Camera: 64MP Primary + 2MP Depth + QVGA
    • Front Camera: 32MP Selfie Camera

The camera setup includes a 64MP primary sensor, a 2MP depth sensor, and a QVGA sensor. While on the front, you get a 32MP selfie snapper.

    Tecno Camon 20 Camera

    Daylight

The 64MP main shooter is surprisingly good, not gonna lie! You get sharp and clear shots with punchy and vibrant colors. Sometimes, the Reds might get too boosted but if you’re someone who loves vibrant colors, the Camon 20 is a no-brainer choice.

    Portraits

Portrait shots are decent, with good human skin tones and image quality.

    Selfies

The 32MP front camera captures sharp and clear photos with vibrant colors. The selfie camera performs well in various lighting conditions, including low light with the help of the LED flash.

    Lowlight

When the sun goes down, the results start getting average. You can see some lens flare issues and oversharpening.

    Videos

For videos, both front and back cameras can shoot up to 2K at 30fps. However, the lack of EIS and average stabilization make the video quality below average. Tecno should have provided EIS here.

    Battery Life

    • Battery: 5,000 mAh Lithium-ion cell
    • Charging: 33W fast charging support (18W charger in the box)

The phone packs a 5000mAh battery, providing a full day of usage with medium usage. Though it supports 33W fast charging, you only get an 18W adapter bundled in the box. Which takes around 2 hours to fully juice the battery.

    Tecno Camon 20 Charging

    Tecno Camon 20 Review: Conclusion

In conclusion, the Tecno Camon 20 is a surprisingly good option in the 23,000 price range. It offers a unique Lychee pattern design, a good quality AMOLED display, and decent cameras for the price. While improvements in software and video recording options could enhance the user experience, the phone performs well in its main aspects, making it a decent offering for its price. If Tecno continues to offer such phones, the competition is gonna get even better, which will be better for the end customer.
