How Trump’s tariffs could impact Nepal: A Nepali perspective

When former U.S. President Donald Trump introduced heavy tariffs on imports, it caused a stir in the global market. Although Nepal might not be the direct target of these tariffs, the effects will still reach us especially when it comes to products like the iPhone. Because you know, what happens in Washington doesn’t stay in Washington really. Let’s break it down simply.

iPhone price hike

The Trump administration imposed a baseline 10% tariff on all goods entering the US, including products from Nepal. However, other countries faced even steeper tariffs: 20% on goods from the European Union, 26% on exports from India, and a hefty 54% on Chinese goods.

Since most iPhones are assembled in China, this 54% tax could make them much more expensive in the U.S. (some say up to $2,300). But the problem is Apple might lower its profits in America to keep U.S. customers happy and then raise prices in other countries (like Nepal) to make up for the loss.

Stuck in the middle

The U.S.-China trade war started because the U.S. accused China of unfair practices like stealing technology and selling cheap goods. This led to high tariffs on Chinese imports, and China responded by placing tariffs on U.S. goods like soybeans and cars. While Nepal isn’t directly involved, we are affected because we rely a lot on Chinese products, like phones and electronics, which might get more expensive due to these tariffs. For many of us, who already save for months to buy the latest phone this is definitely not great news. You can see how these global changes don’t just stay “global” anymore; they affect our wallets too.

Nepal’s role in the global game

Though Nepal may seem far from the big powers like the U.S. and China, we’re not untouched by the effects of this tariff war. We import a significant amount from China, and as the tariffs hit Chinese goods, the prices will likely rise here too. Additionally, if global trade tensions escalate, Nepal’s economy could feel some turbulence, particularly in sectors that depend on affordable imports. It’s a reminder that no country is an island when it comes to trade, Nepal included.

What’s next for Nepal?      

Nepal might be a small player in the global market, but we’ll still experience the impact. If prices continue to rise, Nepali consumers who are known for hunting down the best deals may start looking for alternatives. Maybe we’ll have to hold on to our old phones for a bit longer. And even if it’s not the end of the world, things will definitely change.

Conclusion

To make this work, you have to first activate Gemini, for which you will have to press and hold the side button on your phone. You can now show Gemini what you’re looking at through your camera.

Whether you’re unsure about identifying a plant or need help deciding if your outfit matches (I could use that advice for my jeans and t-shirt dilemma), Gemini’s got your back. Plus, screen sharing is also part of the deal. As you browse online, Gemini can offer personalized style advice just like a personal shopper who doesn’t make you feel bad about your choices.

Sounds fun, right?

Having a conversation with the AI through your camera and screen is a game-changer. We’ve had text-based chats before, but this is a whole new level of communication and more interesting. No more typing out your questions, you just show Gemini what you see and get an instant response. It’s like talking to your bestie who’s always ready to help you pick out the perfect outfit without getting annoyed.

But wait… there’s a catch

Of course, with all this tech magic comes the big question mark of privacy. As cool as it sounds, to share your camera and screen with the AI raises some concerns. You’ve got to decide how much you’re willing to share with Gemini, so keep that in mind. It’s always good to make sure you’re comfortable with what you’re letting the AI see.

Overall, I’m excited to try this feature myself. I’m not sure how well my outfits will improve, but at least I won’t be deciding what to wear alone anymore!

Nothing recently launched the Nothing Phone 3a, which created a good hype in the market. Now, the company’s sub-brand CMF is gearing up to launch 4 different new devices in the market, which include the CMF Phone 2 Pro. Here’s what we know so far.

Upcoming event

CMF has confirmed through its social media channels that its next launch event will take place on April 28. This event will showcase the CMF Phone 2 Pro, along with the Buds 2, Buds 2a, and Buds 2 Plus. Let’s dive into the details of the CMF Phone 2 Pro, which is probably the most exciting device in this launch.

CMF Phone 2 Pro rumored specifications

The CMF Phone 2 Pro will likely feature a 6.77-inch FHD+ AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate. For durability, it will get IP64 ratings. Inside, this device could run on the MediaTek Dimensity 7400 chipset. This should deliver solid performance, though we’ll see how it holds up with heavy apps or multitasking. On the software side, the Phone 2 Pro might come with Nothing OS 3.1, based on Android 15.

CMF Phone 2 Pro launch date

For battery life, it’s rumored to pack a 5,000mAh battery, with support for 50W fast charging. On the camera front, the CMF Phone 2 Pro is expected to have a triple rear camera setup with a 50MP primary sensor, an 8MP ultrawide lens, and a 2MP depth sensor.

In addition to the Pro model, CMF will also introduce three new audio products named the CMF Buds 2, Buds 2a, and Buds 2 Plus. The POCO F7 was rumored to feature the Snapdragon 8s Elite chipset. According to the latest news, the chipset is actually the new Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 instead. This processor is slightly underclocked compared to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 but offers better performance than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.

Design and Rebranding

Poco F7

Reports suggest that the POCO F7 will likely be a rebranded version of the Redmi Turbo 4 Pro. Similarly, the Pro and Ultra variants are expected to correspond to the Redmi K80 and K80 Pro models. Additionally, it might include a 1.5K LTPS AMOLED display.

Certifications and Connectivity

As mentioned above, POCO F7 has already been certified by BIS in India under the model number 2412DPC0AI. It was also previously listed on GSMA and Singapore’s IMDA database. Connectivity features on the device may include 5G, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and NFC. The device could also pack a 7,000mAh battery with support for 90W fast charging.

The POCO F7 is expected to launch in April 2025, while the Pro and Ultra models could debut earlier in mid-2025. The pricing is likely to align with the POCO F6, which launched at INR 29,999 in India.
