The budget section of the Nepali market is filled with many offerings. And Honor has also thrown the ring in the hat with Honor X5b+ and Honor X5b. Both are almost the same phones with just the Plus version beating a higher res rear camera and extra internal storage. So, we have chosen the Plus version to review. Honor X5b Plus Review:

A Good-looking Design

The Honor X5b+ bears an attractive design for a budget phone. If you are someone who’s coming from a bar phone, this guy will appease you for sure. The Blue variant I have looks gorgeous. Flipping to the front, you get a 6.56-inch TFT LCD panel with an HD+ resolution.

For my day-to-day usage with scrolling dozens of reels on Instagram or watching some serious Podcasts on YouTube, the display felt okay for the price while an IPS panel would have been more appreciable. While the 90Hz refresh rate is also just fine, if not great.

Honor X5b Plus Video Playback

Performance

On the performance side, the Honor X5b Plus packs a basic Helio G36 processor under the hood. This 12nm fabbed SoC is also found in Redmi A3. For the price, the fabrication is efficient enough to draw less power, which is good for a longer battery life.

Honor X5b Plus Gaming

Talking of the actual performance, the chip runs fine for normal tasks such as web browsing, social media, and light games. I noticed some occasional stutters but it’s completely normal for a budget phone. So, I let that slide in. Other than that, the MagicOS is also simple and most importantly, there are no ads whatsoever.

Connectivity

Getting to the connectivity side, you get VoLTE support on both NTC and Ncell. Meanwhile, VoWiFi or Wi-Fi Calling also works fine on NTC’s network while Ncell is yet to implement this service. So, you can get HD quality calls by either using a 4G network or WiFi on the Honor X5b Plus. One thing I did miss here is the lack of support for 4G carrier video calling. It’s a pretty handy feature that lets you video call without using any internet data from NTC to NTC SIM.

Honor X5b Plus VoLTE

Camera

Honor X5b Plus Camera

Lastly, let’s talk about cameras. This phone houses a primary 50MP sensor while upfront, there is a 5MP selfie snapper. You can take some decent images (for the price). The same goes for selfies. Likewise, you can shoot basic 1080p 30fps videos from this phone.

Battery

The 5000mAh battery here lasts for 1 and a half days if you are a moderate user. While the 10W charging speed is quite slow. I really wish it was at least 15W.

Honor X5b Plus Review Conclusion:

Okay concluding, the Honor X5b Plus suffices your need if you are looking for an affordable phone. It’s got a good battery life and good looking design. I mean, there is not much to complain over here.

Pebble is bringing its e-ink smartwatches back in an open-sourced way

0

Pebble, the company that revolutionized the smartwatch industry with its first device in 2012, is making a comeback. Its smartwatches were known for their unique e-paper display and impressive 7-day battery. Because of this, they sold over 2 million units back then. In 2016, the company handed over its intellectual property to Fitbit, but now, after nearly a decade, Pebble is planning to return with a new and improved version of its e-ink smartwatch.

Pebble’s Return

What makes Pebble’s E-Ink smartwatch special?

For those unfamiliar with e-ink display, it is the technology that allows screens to be easily read in direct sunlight, unlike traditional backlit displays. This feature has made Pebble’s smartwatches stand out for their readability. Furthermore, the smartwatches used to run on PebbleOS, the custom operating system that took the engineers of the company more than four years to develop.

Pebble e-paper design

“Core set of features”

Pebble’s founder, Eric Migicovsky, has expressed his dissatisfaction over the direction smartwatches have taken since 2021. As per him, smartwatches should feature always-on e-paper displays. Moreover, the watches should also have a long battery, after all, the original Pebble had a 7-day battery life back then.

Furthermore, the official also believes the UI on smartwatches should remain simple. The users should be able to control music directly from their watch with physical buttons, all without needing to look at the screen.

Pebble e-ink display

Not just that, Migicovsky also took a swipe at Apple’s closed ecosystem, stating that the smartwatch should be “hackable,”. Meaning, that it should allow users to customize features like watch faces, something Apple does not allow.

What’s next?

In a recent blog post, Migicovsky revealed that he and a small team are diving back into the hardware world to revive Pebble. While the new smartwatch may have a different name (Google currently owns the rights to “Pebble”), it will retain the core features that made the original device so successful, along with some exciting new additions.

While the exact specifications of the upcoming Pebble smartwatch remain not confirmed, we are expecting they will be built on the strengths of the original model.

PebbleOS goes Open-Source

One of the most exciting developments for the Pebble brand is that PebbleOS is going open-source. Thanks to Google, which now controls Pebble’s intellectual property. This will let enthusiasts and developers build and create new Pebble-compatible smartwatches.

What is happening to OnePlus in Nepal? It’s actually concerning!

0

OnePlus is a well-received name in the smartphone world. But OnePlus in Nepal is kinda going on an absurd path and it’s quite concerning. First, the pricing is way way higher and next, the smartphone launches are always late. In this article, I’ll discuss everything about OnePlus, its current status in Nepal, and the prevalent issues.

The Current Scene of OnePlus in Nepal:

The Inception and Current Distributors

OnePlus gained its cult status back when the OnePlus One made a huge success in the smartphone world, back in 2015. Initially launched with CyanogenOS, the company then developed its own custom OxygenOS after having legal disputes with Motorola over CyanogenOS. And OxygenOS became a major hit, thanks to its unmatched smoothness and customization options amongst the competition.

And this Chinese company made its way into Nepal back in 2017 with the launch of the OnePlus 2, the OG with Snapdragon 810 chipset. The distributor back then was iHub Pvt. Ltd. Now rolling back to 2025, we have two distributors: Kratos and SmartTalk. So, they are the ones bringing in all OnePlus phones and products in Nepal for the time being.

Carl Pei’s Farewell

Car Pei, the co-founder, and mastermind behind the OnePlus success, left the company in October 2020 to later find his own company “Nothing”, sparking a wild shock in the tech world. And as expected, OnePlus got “OppoFied”, starting with the code base merger of Oppo’s ColorOS and OnePlus’s OxygenOS. This move diminished the OG charm of the OxygenOS and didn’t fit quite well among the OnePlus fans, leading to mass criticisms. Well, the company kept on moving with increased pricing and losing the “Flagship Killer” status by providing actual Flagship offerings. Slowly, people began to adapt to these moves and the brand managed to maintain a good market share, especially in India.

Carl Pei One Plus

The Current Scene of OnePlus in India and Nepal

OnePlus is a very popular brand in India, thanks to its value-for-money phones and competitive pricing. The biggest South Asian country always witnesses swift launches of the latest OnePlus phones. The sub INR 25,000 range has a good phone such as OnePlus Nord CE 4 and then, we have OnePlus Nord 4 at INR 30,000. Likewise, the latest flagship and semi-flagship duo, the OnePlus 13 and OnePlus 13R are also launched at pretty nice pricing. Plus, the “Notorious Green Line” is also somehow solved in India, with a lifetime warranty and replacement service for the affected phones.

OnePlus 13R Casual
OnePlus 13R

But the situation is quite weird on this side of the border. OnePlus is popular here too but we haven’t witnessed the latest launches. And let me remind you of the terrible pricing of the OnePlus 12 and OnePlus 12R. It landed here at NPR 139,999 (16/512GB) and NPR 90,999 (16/256GB). To compare, the same variants of these guys launched in India at INR 69,999 and INR 45,999 respectively. Which converts to NPR 111,999 and NPR 74,599. I don’t really think, Nepal deserves such outrageous pricing just because it’s a small market. I mean, a 5000 rupees price difference on the flagship could have been acceptable but given the pricing, it’s outrageous to the very core.

Late Launches

Okay putting the pricing issue aside, there is another one which is also equally concerning. The Nepalese market is still waiting for the launch of the OnePlus Nord 4 and Nord CE 4 which were unveiled months ago in India. Instead, we got the OnePlus Nord CE 4 Lite at NPR 41,499, powered by the old Snapdragon 695 chip. And it is again way cheaper in India, available at just INR 20,999 which converts to NPR 33,599. And we are yet to see the launch of OnePlus 13 and OnePlus 13R. Assuming its current and past tracking, the pricing of the 2025 flagship offerings is also very likely to be on the higher side sadly.

Nord CE 4 Lite

OnePlus in Nepal: Conclusion

Well, due to the smaller size of the market, Nepal has always been taken for granted by big companies. In particular, smartphone prices are comparatively expensive here in Nepal except for some brands. And OnePlus Nepal is not helping much to ease the scene. First, it’s launching new devices at a super high price, and that too, is not on time. And it’s high time, the respective distributors should make the right amendments for both pricing and swift launch of OnePlus smartphones in Nepal.

DeepSeek vs ChatGPT – How do they compare?

0

When ChatGPT was first introduced, it became an instant favorite to everyone. But now, there’s a new player in town: DeepSeek. This open-source, completely free AI model from China is not only giving ChatGPT tough competition but is also proving that the future of AI might not be as expensive as we thought. Let’s get into the depth of DeepSeek vs ChatGPT.

DeepSeek vs. ChatGPT

When ChatGPT hit the stage, it was like the AI world had found its rockstar. Developed by OpenAI, ChatGPT quickly became the go-to tool for everything from writing essays to debugging code and even crafting dad jokes (hahaha!). Its ability to understand and generate human-like text made it a global sensation, and for good reason.

But here’s the catch: while ChatGPT’s early versions were free, the latest and greatest iterations like GPT-4 (and newer) come with a price tag. Sure, you get what you pay for, but not everyone is willing to spend money for AI-powered small talk.

Enter DeepSeek, China’s answer to the AI arms race. This open-source, completely free AI model is not just keeping up with ChatGPT it’s giving it serious head-to-head challenges.

DeepSeek R1

Why DeepSeek stands out

DeepSeek is a powerful AI tool that’s been making big headlines lately. It’s open-source, meaning developers worldwide can tinker with it, improve it, and make it their own. And the best part? It’s absolutely free. No subscriptions, no hidden fees, and no “premium features” locked behind a paywall. Recently it was revealed that the Chinese company had created Deepseek for around 5 million dollars, which created a massive upheaval in the US market, particularly that of the chip company like NVIDIA, who lost more than 600 Billion dollars in a single day.

But DeepSeek isn’t just about being free it’s also a powerhouse in terms of performance. In several key areas, it’s already surpassing ChatGPT. For instance, DeepSeek excels in handling complex mathematical problems, is incredibly efficient at processing and summarizing large volumes of text, let’s not forget its multilingual capabilities, which are giving ChatGPT a tough time in the global market. I’ve written a separate article where you can see how DeepSeek competes equally and even outperforms tools like ChatGPT-4 and Claude 3.5.

deepseek benchmark score

On the downside, ChatGPT provides fair answers to any question, no matter the country of origin, however, DeepSeek refrains from answering questions related to China’s censored news or sensitive topics.

How do they compare?

Pricing

DeepSeek R1 stands out for its affordability, you can use it for free, while OpenAI charges $20 for ChatGPT o1. For developers, its API is 27x cheaper than ChatGPT o1. Additionally, the DeepSeek team has open-sourced its RL method for test-time computing.

1V1

I compared them in multiple categories, and here’s how it went:

Q1. Reasoning

“if a train leaves Station A at 10:01 AM, traveling at 60 km/h, and another train leaves Station B at 11:00 AM, traveling at 80 km/h toward Station A, at what time will they meet if the distance between the stations is 300 km?”

Both of the models were able to reason out pretty well with the same answer.  However, my view is that the chatgpt had a much clearer explanation that could be well laid out to a layman.

Q2. Creative writing

“Write a short story (100 words) about an anti-hero who’s alienated from his society”

So talking on “creative” writing, I wasn’t particularly impressed by either of the models. However, Deepseek has the edge as it attempts to amalgamate alienation with a more pronounced set (creating a mythical fiction-like background), compared to ChatGPT who seems to bring out the most cliched definition of alienation in existence. Above we can see, how Deepseek uses the role of an anti-hero as a universally applicable being and not just as limited to a modern individual who’s “anti-establishment”. The neon-lit set also explains how ChatGPT just vomits the typical/cliched view of lighting and staging as something very mechanical and having no individuality of its own.

3. Knowledge/ Essay Writing

“Grierson, Flaherty and several other documentary pioneers were explicitly influenced by the strategies of Russian cinema, particularly their use of montage, yet these strategies have for the most part been rejected by more contemporary documentary film practitioners. Examine why (or if!) you think this to be the case, citing examples. [ In 250 words]”

Regarding knowledge/history-based questions, I think both of them did pretty well. But my view is that ChatGPT gave a better answer, as it also countered the fact that the strategies of Russian cinema are still in action and not rejected in their entirety.

Conclusion: ChatGPT vs Deepseek

In my opinion, both of them have strengths and weaknesses. Aside from its political censorship of anything related to China, I think it does a commendable job compared to its competitors. However, because of the low operating budget, Deepseek users can face problems with traffic as more and more people are trying to access it.

A few more words

While the U.S. has been leading the AI race for years, China is catching up fast. DeepSeek is just one example of how Chinese AI is becoming an alarming competitor. Looking ahead, the possibilities are endless. And with models like DeepSeek leading the charge, the future of AI might just have a “Made in China” label.
