Apple gets sued for using toxic “PFA” chemicals in its Watch bands!

Apple has been sued this week over the allegations that certain Apple Watch bands contain harmful “forever chemicals” known as PFAS. Let’s get into the depth of this big news.

Allegations of misleading consumers

A class action lawsuit has been filed against Apple this week in a federal court in Northern California. The lawsuit accuses the tech giant of false advertising and violating various consumer protection laws. The company fails to disclose that certain Apple Watch bands contain harmful “forever chemicals” known as PFAS. The bands in question include the Sport Band, Ocean Band, and Nike Sport Band.

Furthermore, the complaint claims that Apple misled consumers by advertising its Apple Watch as a health-conscious product. The lawsuit argues that by failing to disclose the presence of PFAS, Apple misrepresented the safety and wellness benefits of its product. According to the plaintiffs, this constitutes fraud, negligence, and a violation of California’s consumer protection laws.

What are PFAS and why are they dangerous?

PFAS (per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances) are a group of chemicals that are used in consumer products like nonstick cookware, clothing, and some waterproof materials. While they are known for their durability and resistance to stains and water, PFAS have been linked to serious health risks.

These include cancer, immune suppression, and developmental harm in unborn children. Moreover, these chemicals are “forever chemicals” because they do not break down in the environment or the human body, accumulating over time.

In 2022, Apple made a public commitment to eliminate PFAS from its products. However, the lawsuit argues that the company sold bands containing these harmful chemicals despite this promise. A study conducted by a scientist from the University of Notre Dame found elevated levels of PFAS in several other popular fitness trackers and smartwatches. Among the devices tested were the Pixel Watch 3, Galaxy Watch Sport with T-buckle bands, and the OnePlus Watch 2 with a fluoro-rubber strap.

Apple denies the allegations

However, in response to the lawsuit, Apple has strongly refuted the allegations. The company maintains that its Apple Watch bands are safe for users to wear and that they also comply with all relevant safety standards. So, only time will uncover the full details of this case. Huawei rebranded its P-series of phones into the Pura lineup and launched the first rendition over half a year ago. These phones made their names for their exceptional photography capabilities. Now the Chinese tech giant is preparing to have a go at it once again. Let’s take a look at what we know about the Huawei Pura 80 series so far.

Adding to the standards set by its predecessor, the Huawei Pura 80 series will continue to have outstanding cameras. For reference, the Pura 70 had a one-inch retractable lens while maintaining a sleek and lightweight design.

We heard the news that the upcoming Huawei phone will have the OmniVision OV50X sensor, which is popular for its large photosensitive area and LOFIC technology. However, fresh rumors suggest that Huawei might develop a self-made triple-camera system for the Pura 80 which could feature a main camera and periscope lens. Additionally, the periscope sensor is touted as the “best” and “largest” in its class, with a 1/1.3″ sensor size.

What’s under the hood?

The Huawei Pura 80 will likely have the Kirin 9100 processor powering it. Its predecessor had the Kirin 9010 as its primary driver, which with its 7nm fabbing was a far cry from a flagship experience. Budget smartwatches are now facing a sales decline, as consumer interest wanes. The Indian wearable market dropped 20.7% YoY in Q3 2024, continuing a trend of falling shipments. A total of 38 million units were shipped, but for the first time since 2019, the average selling price (ASP) rose by 1.3%, reaching $21.1. This article will discuss everything about the new reports about the budget smartwatch sales in more detail.

Budget Smartwatch Sales Decline

IDC attributes the downturn to fewer new product launches and cautious inventory strategies, even during festive sales. Despite this, brands like Boult and Realme saw growth, with 32.5% and 56.5% increases, respectively. Noise continued to lead the smartwatch category, while BoAt cleared out older stock. Nothing experienced a remarkable 308.2% YoY growth across wearables.

Smartwatch shipments specifically declined 44.9% YoY, down to 9.3 million units. Discounting strategies during festive sales helped brands clear inventory, but even advanced smartwatches, like the Apple Watch, saw a 39.9% YoY decline. The smartwatch market is under pressure, primarily due to undifferentiated products, with analysts predicting the market will remain flat or see a slight decline in 2025. However, early signs show a shift towards advanced smartwatches, driven by demand for better health tracking.

Rise of Smart Rings and Other Wearables

On the other hand, the smart ring market continues to grow, with shipments increasing to over 91,000 in Q3 2024. Prices have dropped 16.2% YoY, and new products are expected in the coming quarters.

The global smartwatch market showed a slight 1% YoY decline, with 139 million units shipped in the first three quarters of 2024. Opinion: The Future of Smartwatches

In my opinion, smartwatches might eventually become obsolete in some form or another. Despite their popularity, many tech enthusiasts are starting to abandon them. Features like the sleep tracker are often inaccurate, and the idea of tracking “deep sleep” with simple sensors is unrealistic. Accurate results can only be achieved with advanced technology like polysomnography (PSG), which measures brain activity. As technology advances, people will likely return to regular analog watches as they rather have the most extraordinary charm than any other smartwatches in existence. For example, an analog watch that comes under 10k will catch more eyes than a smartwatch that might go beyond 20k. And as even earbuds like my Liberty 4 offers heart rate monitoring, and companies like Sennheiser are adding temperature sensors. With the possibility of eSIMs in earbuds, the need for smartwatches may continue to diminish.

Galaxy S25 Ultra’s Gorilla Armor 2 glass can survive 2.2 meters drop!

After a long wait, the Samsung Galaxy S25 series is official (except for the Edge), and it’s packing some serious features. Among the highlights is the new Gorilla Armor 2 on the S25 Ultra with its 2.2-meter drop protection. Let’s unpack this.

Gorilla Armor 2: A Major Upgrade

Samsung first introduced Corning Gorilla Glass with the Galaxy S23, which could survive drops from about a meter (roughly waist height) onto concrete. Now, the Galaxy S25 Ultra takes things to a whole new level with Gorilla Armor 2, a ceramic version that can withstand drops from up to 2.2 meters (about 7.2 feet) onto concrete. That’s nearly twice the height of a standard drop test. Pretty impressive huh!

But, hold on…

While the numbers sound impressive, there’s a catch. The 2.2m drop test was conducted in a controlled lab environment, where the phone was dropped face-down onto a “surface replicating concrete” using a weighted puck (a testing object). In simpler terms, your phone might not survive a real-world drop from that height, especially if it lands at an awkward angle or hits a different surface. So, while Gorilla Armor 2 makes the glass tougher, it’s not guaranteed that your phone will survive every fall.

Scratch resistance

One of the coolest parts of the Gorilla Armor 2 upgrade is that it’s tougher without sacrificing scratch resistance. Corning claims that this new glass offers “over four times more scratch resistance than competitive lithium-aluminosilicate cover glass with an anti-reflective coating”. So, not only is it harder to crack, but it’ll also look cleaner for longer, with fewer scratches and smudges.

Wireless charging has gained good popularity in a short amount of time, mainly because it’s so convenient and works with a variety of devices. If you’re reading this article, I’m guessing you’re wondering, “Does wireless charging damage your battery health?” I am sorry to say this but there’s no one-word answer as you might be expecting. It’s a yes and also a no. How? Let’s unpack.

What’s wireless charging?

Before we dive in, let’s start with a quick rundown of what wireless charging actually is. At its core, wireless charging is a charging type that works through induction where the power gets transferred between two coils: one in the charger (the transmitter coil) and one in your device (the receiver coil). So, instead of plugging your device into a charging cable, a special wireless charging pad transfers energy to your device using electromagnetic induction.

Good or a bad deal?

As I told you already, both!

Pros

We can see a good hype of wireless chargers these days. The main reason behind this is convenience. Wireless charging can actually help extend your battery’s lifespan. Here’s the thing; our laziness is a secret battery-saving superpower. It’s just easier to drop your phone onto a charging pad than it is to plug in a cable, right? This comfort encourages us to charge more frequently, which leads to fewer deep discharges. That, in turn, is good for your battery. So, in a roundabout way, wireless charging can indirectly boost your battery life.

Moreover, one wireless charger can charge multiple devices on the same pad. It also protects your mobile or devices from continuous wear and tear with fewer mechanical stress points on charging ports.

Cons

Well, the downsides of wireless charging are hard to ignore. Wireless charging doesn’t directly harm your battery, but the heat generated during charging definitely can.

Here’s why: during the wireless charging process, the transmitter and receiver coils have to transfer energy through several layers like air, the plastic cover of the charging pad, the back of your phone, and sometimes even your phone’s case. With all these obstacles, some of the energy gets wasted, and the turns into heat. Where does that heat go? Right into your phone (most of it). That heat buildup can contribute to battery degradation over time.

In fact, wireless charging is around 47% less efficient than plugging your phone in with a cable. So, if you’re charging your phone wirelessly, especially on a fast charger, you might want to be a bit cautious.

Slow and steady wins the race

Now, don’t throw away your wireless charger just yet! The heat problem typically only arises with fast-charging wireless pads. If you’re using a 10W or 15W charger, you’re in the safe zone. These devices charge your phone more slowly, producing less heat and causing little to no damage. On the other hand, fast-charging wireless pads can heat things up really fast, and that’s where the trouble starts.

The bottom line

In conclusion, while wireless charging isn’t perfect, it’s not as bad as some people make it out to be. If you’re using a slower charger, it’s just fine. It’s an easy, convenient way to charge your phone without causing damage.
