Huawei was among the first companies to enter the foldable industry. It joined the bandwagon back in 2019 with the Mate X, which was followed by Mate X2 in 2021. And the company has now introduced a new member to its “X” series of foldable phone lines, the Mate X3. So let’s walk through the specs, features, and expected price of the Huawei Mate X3 in Nepal.

Huawei Mate X3 Overview:

Thinner and lighter form factor

Huawei first gave a sneak peek of the Mate X3 with the catchy tagline “light as a wing, firm as a rock”. And indeed, the company lived up to its promise, as the foldable is much lighter and slimmer than its predecessor.

While the Mate X2 weighed in at 295 grams and measured 8.2mm unfolded, the X3 brings these numbers down to just 239 grams and 5.33mm, respectively. This makes the Mate X3 Huawei’s lightest foldable yet.

The Mate X3 has also secured an IPX8 rating, which is still a rarity in this space. In fact, this is the first Huawei foldable to bag an IP certification for water resistance. Although there’s no foldable yet with a dust-resistance rating. Huawei has also given a “wet-hand mode” which lets you use the foldable, you guessed it, in wet hands.

Likewise, the foldable relies on a dual-track waterdrop style hinge for its fold mechanism. It’s crafted with 700Mpa wing aluminum, which as per Huawei, gives it a sturdy build. The hinge also uses non-porous technology and a dual-rail drive structure that makes it light and water-resistant. The company offers two options for the rear panels: glass and vegan leather.

Display

The phone has a 7.85″ LTPO foldable display—which is slightly smaller than the 8″ panel on the Mate X2. It has a 2496 × 2224 pixels resolution and 426 PPI. The cover display, on the other hand, remains the same at 6.4″. It boasts a 2504 × 1080 pixels resolution with the same 426 PPI. Likewise, Huawei has provided 1440 Hz PWM dimming on both displays for eye protection.

On top of that, the Mate X3’s screen bags TÜV Rheinland certifications for Color Accuracy & Precise Color Projection, making it the first foldable to do so. The inner display also has LTPO technology, meaning it can refresh from 0-120Hz, while the outer display settles for the LTPS technology for better adaptive refresh rate control. Both displays have a punch hole for housing the selfie cameras.

For display protection, the company has used “Kunlun” glass on the outer display. It’s the same glass used in the Mate 50 series. According to Huawei, this is an ultra-high-strength drop-resistant glass with a 10-fold increase in drop resistance.

Meanwhile, the multilayered inner display also boasts a layer of non-Newtonian fluid materials that offers 4X drop resistance. Both displays bag a five-star drop-resistance certification from Switzerland’s SGS.

Performance

Under the hood, the Mate X3 gets the horsepower of the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset. However, this will only support the 4G network due to the U.S.A’s restriction on Huawei. The silicon is based on TSMC’s 4nm process and features a prime X2 core at 3.2GHz frequency. It is coupled with 12GB RAM and up to 1TB of internal storage.

For keeping the thermals in check, the Mate X3 uses a cross-hinge cooling system with a unique flexible conductive layer. This helps to share the heat across the dual parts of the screen with a 20% larger heat dissipation area than its predecessor. Likewise, the phone boots on EMUI 13.1 for the global market, and HarmonyOS 3 in China. Both ROMs are deprived of Google Play services.

Camera

Coming to the optics, the Mate X3 sports a triple camera setup. On the rear side, you are looking at a 50MP Sony IMX 766 main camera, accompanied by a 13MP ultrawide and 12MP telephoto shooter with a 5X optical zooming capability.

The brand has provided OIS support for the primary and periscope lenses except for the ultrawide unit. All of the lenses enjoy X-Mage coating and filters. Meanwhile, there are two 8MP front cameras on the punch-hole sides of both the outer and inner displays.

Battery and Others

Fueling the foldable phone is a 4800mAh battery with 66W wired fast charging support. It supports 50W wireless charging too. Additionally, there is also the Collector’s Edition version with a bigger 5060mAh silicon carbon battery.

Talking of the connectivity options, the Mate X3 includes two-way satellite connectivity, 4G, Wi-Fi 802.11 ax (2.4GHz and 5GHz), Bluetooth 5.2, GPS (L1 + L5 dual-band), NavIC, NFC, and a USB 3.1 Type-C port.
