Here, Ampere is the successor to the Turing architecture (found in RTX 20 series), and it features NVIDIA's second-generation raytracing (RT) cores and third-gen Tensor cores. Like every other entry in this lineup, the RTX 3070 is also manufactured under a custom Samsung 8nm process technology.

During the launch event, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang mentioned that the RTX 3070 was faster than the Turing-based RTX 2080 Ti. As for memory, NVIDIA has gone with 8GB of GDDR6 VRAM here. This decision received widespread criticism because, for a card that was targeting 4K gaming, just 8GB of video memory was simply not enough. That too of the slower GDDR6 standard compared to the faster GDDR6X memory on the enthusiast-grade RTX 3080 and 3090 series!

Still and all, the RTX 3070 is just fine for 1440p gaming (and subsequently 1080p gaming too). And since it supports NVIDIA's DLSS technology, the 3070 is also future-proof enough to handle 1440p gaming on future titles. More on the memory, it features a 256-bit memory bus with 448 GB/s bandwidth. The RTX 3070 can run at a 1.50 GHz base or 1.77 GHz of boost clock speed. In terms of power, this card has 220W TGP, while NVIDIA recommends you use a 650W or higher PSU.

Founder's Edition

Moving on, the RTX 3070 Founder's Edition comes with a dual-fan design (both on the same side of the cooler). The left fan is dedicated to cooling the GPU while the one on the right pushes air through the card's shroud to the opposite end. As demonstrated by multiple independent reviews, this dual-axial design is perfectly capable of keeping the 3070 quiet and cool. But if you want even more aggressive cooling and also a bit of RGB flair, you can opt for RTX 3070 partner (aka aftermarket) cards instead. Companies like Asus, MSI, Gigabyte, EVGA, Zotac, Sapphire, ASRock, and others offer different categories of RTX 3070 with varying levels of cooling solution and visual aesthetics; all the while retaining the core specs of NVIDIA's reference RTX 3070.

When it comes to price, the RTX 3070 Founder's Edition had an MSRP (Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price) of just $499! However, thanks to the booming crypto industry and the global chip shortage, this card retailed for more than double/triple the price for a long time. To counter this, NVIDIA also launched LHR (Lite Hash Rate)-enabled cards that limited their crypto-mining capability. But as both situations have eased up recently, the GPU prices in general getting back to normal. At least in the Western market. In any case, do note that partner cards are usually a little more expensive than their respective Founder's Edition counterparts.
