What is VoNR and what are its advantages over VoLTE?

Voice Over New Radio commonly known as VoNR is a tech based on 5G network connectivity. It takes over as the successor of the 4G VoLTE (Voice Over LTE) with some advantages. In this article, we’ll talk and discuss VoNR in general, including its features and expected availability in Nepal.

Voice Over New Radio (VoNR) Overview:

What is VoNR?

So basically, VoNR is the process of encasing Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) using the 5G connectivity, on Standalone (SA) architecture. 5G network doesn’t support voice calls natively which is the same as 4G. For instance, you have a 4G NTC or Ncell SIM but haven’t activated VoLTE on your phone. You can use data at 4G speed but attending a phone call at the same time, your data will fall back to 3G. This proves the aforementioned point that 4G also doesn’t support support native voice calling. That’s why VoLTE was introduced and it’s the same thing for VoNR.

Advantages over VoLTE

Compared to the last-gen tech, VoLTE, VoNR does boast some advantages.

  • Better Voice Quality: VoNR provides an even better call quality and improved overall communication, thanks to 5G connectivity. Plus, it removes the LTE anchor, so voice calls will stay entirely within the 5G network. On the contrary, VoLTE uses a 4G network for the same purpose.
  • Native Video Calls: Like VoLTE, VoNR also boasts support for native video calling or carrier video calling. But as expected, it offers a better quality on this side too.
  • Latency: VoNR as a new tech also excels in lower latency than VoLTE. So, you will get faster call setup.
  • Faster Data Connection: As it’s based on 5G, you can opt to keep using high-speed 5G data even during a phone call. While VoLTE calls can only provide 4G internet speed during an audio call.
  • More Support for IoT devices: Likewise, VoNR also extends support to more IoT (Internet of Things) devices, thanks to 5G connectivity.
  • Efficiency: VoNR is also light on battery consumption, providing better efficiency than VoLTE.

Pre-requisites for VoNR to work

In case you didn’t know, the 5G network operates in two architectures: Standalone (SA) and Non Standalone (NSA). The former as the name implies, has a separate architecture dedicated to 5G while the latter uses an existing 4G LTE core: Evolved Packet Core (EPC) for deploying the 5G network. But bandwidth speed is much better on the SA network albeit with a lesser coverage area than NSA.

  • Standalone 5G architecture:  To use VoNR, your device must be connected to a 5G connectivity from a Standalone Architecture (SA). That means VoNR doesn’t work on a 5G network based on a Non-Standalone Architecture.
  • Supported Carrier: VoNR also depends on the carrier or telecom operator. If your carrier supports VoNR, it will work on your smartphone otherwise, it won’t. Plus as aforementioned, VoNR requires SA, so if your carrier is using an NSA architecture, the  voice calls will fall back to 4G, i.e, VoLTE
  • Supported Devices: In order to use VoNR, support on your device is also a must, as if it weren’t obvious. So, not only the 5G network support, but your smartphone should support VoNR calls. This was the same case with VoLTE, older phones despite having 4G network support, don’t boast VoLTE support.

VoNR Availability in Nepal

As everyone knows, 5G has yet to arrive in Nepal. The state-owned telco, Nepal Telecom has been internally testing it for the past two years, but, there are no certain dates for the commercial launch. On the other hand, Ncell is yet to receive a trial license from the Nepal Telecommunications Authority.

5G Network Nepal

Plus, most importantly, the initial 5G network launch will likely be based on Non Standalone Architecture (NSA). So, it won’t support Voice Over New Radio. But that doesn’t put an end to the availability of VoNR in Nepal as NTC will also provide a 5G network on Standalone Architecture sometime after launching 5G on NSA.

How to activate VoLTE in Nepal?

Since VoNR is not available in Nepal, let’s take a quick recap of how to activate VoLTE in Nepal. By the way, VoLTE service is free and it doesn’t incur any extra charges for your information.

Activate VoLTE on NTC

  • First, dial *444# on your phone’s keypad.
  • Then, the USSD (Unstructured Supplementary Service Data) response will list three options.
  • To activate VoLTE, select the “Activate VOLTE” option by dialing 2 on your keypad.
  • Now, VoLTE is activated on your NTC SIM.
  • Also, dial *111# to claim 100 minutes free NTC to NTC voice pack valid for 28 days.
  • Head over to the SIM settings or Mobile network settings on your smartphone and enable 4G calling or VoLTE calling.

Activate VoLTE on Ncell

  • You can dial *17201# on your phone’s keypad.
  • VoLTE will be activated on your Ncell SIM.
  • Head over to the SIM settings or Mobile network settings on your smartphone and enable 4G calling or VoLTE calling.

Acer refreshed some of its TravelMate business machines a few months ago and now they are official here via Mercantile Communication. In this article, let’s take a quick peek at the available Acer TravelMate 14 (2024) models, their offerings, and price in Nepal.

Acer TravelMate Laptops Overview

Design and Display

Acer has many models under its TravelMate lineup and some of its 14” offerings are now here in Nepal. That includes the P2, P4, and P6 14 SKUs all of which ship with Miltary Grade build and a sustainability-focused approach. They are lightweight machines (<1.6 kg) with durable chassis featuring post-consumer recycled plastic. The P6 is the lightest of the bunch at just 1200 grams and this one’s more premium with an aluminum magnesium alloy.

Moving on to the display, you get either an IPS or an OLED panel with a 1200p (WUXGA) or an 1800p (WQXGA) screen. The IPS variants have up to 340 nits of brightness and cover the whole of the sRGB gamut while the OLED reaches up to 400 nits and has full DCI P3 colors. 

Performance and Memory 

Under the hood, the business-focused Acer TravelMate laptops ship with new Intel Core and Core Ultra processors. The TravelMate P2 14 and P4 14 have Core 5 120U, and Core 7 150U respectively while the pricier P6 14 ships with a Core Ultra 5 125H. A very important distinction is that the former two are based on an older architecture and feature Intel’s Iris Xe while the ‘Ultra’ chip is a Meteor Lake product with a well-upgraded Arc-integrated GPU among other efficiency gains.

As for the memory side of things, you are getting the standard 16/512GB configuration on most variants but there’s an extra M.2 slot on the P6 while the P2 and P4 have swappable RAM. 

Battery and Extras

Although all three are 14-inch laptops, the battery sizes on the Acer TravelMate 14 (2024) can vary from 50-65Wh depending on the model. You get two Thunderbolt 4 ports, an HDMI, a Type-A, a microSD reader, and a headphone jack on the TravelMate P6 14 while the P2 and P4 bring extra Type-A and RJ45 ports.

Finally, taking a look at the additional features, we get to see stuff like a physical privacy shutter, a white backlight, and a fingerprint reader. The brand hasn’t specified the resolution for all the models, but it’d be safe to assume an FHD webcam. For wireless connections, there’s WiFi 6E and Bluetooth.

Updating its affordable TUF lineup, Asus has announced three new models: TUF A15, TUF A16, and TUF F16 (2024). The A15 is the first to make it here, but disappointingly only the RTX 2050 and RTX 3050 models are available that too with older Ryzen chips. Design and Display

Not much is different in the design department. The TUF A15 is still somewhat weighty at 2.2 kg and arrives with a sturdy mecha-esque build and MIL-STD-810H rating. On the display front, you are getting a 15” IPS panel of 2.5 k resolution and a 16:9 aspect ratio. It can go up to 165Hz with a 3ms response time and covers the full sRGB gamut.

Performance 

Asus didn’t initially specify the exact CPU powering the upcoming TUF A15. Instead, they said that the machine would be powered by new Ryzen 8000 series HawkPoint APU up to the Ryzen 9 8945H chip. Now, we know that the A15 can run a number of different CPU configurations but the ones that have made their way to Nepal are only the entry-level Ryzen 5 7435HS and the top-of-the-line Ryzen AI 9.

Vivo has launched a trio of smartphones in the Nepal market recently. Of the three phone newly-launched phones, Vivo Y33s serves as the middle ground between the budget-friendly Y01 and premium V23 5G. Xiaomi debuted the much-anticipated Redmi Note 10 series in 2021. Among the three new devices, the Redmi Note 10 is the cheapest one, all the while packing some serious power. And now, Xiaomi Nepal has officially brought the phone to Nepal. Let’s learn more about the Xiaomi Redmi Note 10 official price in Nepal including its features and full specs.

Redmi Note 10 Overview:

Design & Display

Starting with the design, Xiaomi has parted ways with the “Aura Design” language that it’s been using for a couple of years. The new “Evol.” design language prioritizes a sleeker body and a smooth gradient finish at the back. It’s unsure whether the rear panel comes with Gorilla Glass protection but the front is protected by Corning’s Gorilla Glass 3. The rear-mounted fingerprint sensor from the Redmi Note 9 has been shifted to the side instead. Similarly, the phone is also IP53 certified for dust/water resistance.

Redmi Note 10 - Display

Coming to the display, Xiaomi has finally answered the cries of its customers and included a Super AMOLED screen. You’re getting a 6.43-inch s-AMOLED display with Full HD resolution here. But unlike its pro-sibling, Redmi is limiting the refresh rate to the standard 60Hz. It is rated at 1100 nits of peak brightness and supports different color profiles like standard, sunlight, and night mode.

Performance

On the performance front, Xiaomi is going all-in on Qualcomm in this year’s Redmi Note series. Here, the entry-level Redmi Note 10 is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 678. Based on the 11nm process, it is a slight upgrade over the Snapdragon 675 but with an overclocked Kryo 460 CPU. And no, it’s not 5G-capable. This silicon has been paired with 4 or 6GB of LPDDR4X RAM and up to 128GB of UFS 2.2 internal storage. You can upgrade the latter using a microSD card for which there’s a dedicated slot on the SIM tray.

Thankfully, the phone runs on MIUI 12 based on Android 11 out-of-the-box. Xiaomi’s aggressive competitiveness discipline is reflected here as its direct competitor Realme is still launching high-end phones with Android 10. The phone also includes a Z-axis vibration motor for improved haptic feedback while gaming, typing, etc.

Cameras

Moving on to the cameras, Redmi Note 10 has a quad-lens setup inside a redesigned camera module. It has a 48MP Sony IMX582 primary sensor followed by an 8MP IMX355 ultra-wide and a couple of 2MP sensors for macro and portrait photos.

You can shoot up to 4K/30fps videos from the rear camera, while slo-mo videos can hit up to 960fps under 720p resolution. Upfront is a 13MP selfie camera inside the punch-hole cutout. Xiaomi has also worked extensively to minimize the cutout’s diameter as it measures just 3.54mm.

Redmi Note 10 gets its juice from a big 5000mAh battery which supports 33W fast charging. As usual, you’ll get a 33W fast charger inside the box itself. Xiaomi claims it can fully juice up the phone from 0 to 100% in just 74 minutes. In terms of audio, this phone comes with a dual stereo speaker setup which is Hi-Res certified too. Other phone amenities include a 3.5mm headphone jack and an IR blaster.
